How bizzare it is to see a 350 dollar Acer with FHD screen and a 900 dollar Acer with HD screen being sold by same seller. I sometimes wonder who in the company decides which laptop to get to sell to consumers.

The laptop has everything except FHD screen.

Makes no sense to me to have a laptop with support for NVMe yet not full-HD. Nowadays, 720p is unusable, with most websites and applications designed with full-HD in mind.

    • What model Acer laptop with FHD screen for $350 are you referring to?

There was one model I looked at with Celeron quad core with FHD screen on clearance for around that price, but hard to get that model last few months now.

you can install a fhd ips youself, I did it a few times. for most laptops it takes 10 minutes flat, and a decent panel can be found on ebay under $100 delivered. you can do it carefully and keep the warranty. comes warranty or sale time, swap out the old panel, and put it in your next laptop. gotta learn how to play the game!

exceptions: Lenovo ThinkPads, any laptop with touch screen. those are tricky to replace the panel, so do your homework.

      • Thanks but why go through the hassle when you can get one with FHD every now and then from Lenovo.

        • suit yourself, buddy, if you don't mind spending extra cash. true ozbargain spirit is to get a 6th gen i7 laptop from Renewd for $300, put in an ssd and FullHD panel for nickels, and have extra cash to feed the bulldog :D

        • @kasaresj: hmm would have thought fhd screen to be very model specific to fit and so not cheap. Also the connector from the mb to the screen ?

        • @garage sale: laptop models are built around display panels, not the other way around. across the whole modern range of, say, 15 inch laptops, 80% use the same standard. go to YouTube and search for screen replacement, and see for yourself how easy it is :)

        • @garage sale: here's how you do it:
          1. choose some laptop model you like (but don't like the screen)
          2. grab the exact laptop model (like say ASUS F555UA-X91s)
          3. head to laptopscreens.com and search for that model
          4. check what the screen looks like, and what kind of connector (30 or 40 PIN) it is
          5. search around for screen replacement videos for this model, to make sure it's not too hard (premium models can be tricky, and lenovo ThinkPads, and HP Envy etc.). If it is too hard for you, head to step 1 and choose a different model :D
          6. head to eBay, search for "15 ips screen", and choose one that looks exactly like the picture from laptopscreen site (there's a great seller in UK, I ordered mine there, around $80 delivered)
          7. order it, get it, swap it.

after doing steps 1-4 a few times for different models, you'll probably notice they all look exactly the same. So far I installed the same panel into 4 different laptops (various brands), and it fits like a glove.

        • @kasaresj: hmm will give it a go, I have enough 5th gen acer Aspire laptops (3) that are fast enough but the 720P is why they don't get used. they didn't come with graphics cards but the Intel inbuilt graphics does support 1080p, so providing the bios recognises it, physically it fits and connectors match up this could breath new life into some laptops …. they already have 8GB and 500GB SSDs in them.

        • @garage sale: pm me the model numbers next week, and I can help you decide which ones are easy to upgrade panel, and point you to the correct eBay listing

        • @garage sale: btw recently I did it to an hp built around a celeron n3060! if that can handle 1080p fine, your processors will, too :)

    • excellent point.

  • so, pay $570 more for downgrade to HD res + i7/mx130 that can't even do decent gaming

    1366x768 yuck! I didn't expect that.
I should have read the details instead of upvoting from the home page.

    • 1366x768 surely sux.
But if say I had this notebook connected to a Dell UltraSharp 25 Monitor (U2515H) on 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz that would make it go from "sux" to "not bad"? Or am I mistaken?

      • mx130 still suxx though

spend another 200+ for dell 1050Ti during ebay 20%

    • You can revoke your vote, I'm sure there is an option for that somewhere.

Not that I think this is a bad deal…

  • I'd recommend to go with the Dell 15" with FHD, Ryzen 2500U (comparable CPU performance to the i7, and better graphic performance than the MX130), and $800 price tag (although without an SSD, but with current eBay sales, can get a 128GB SSD as bootdrive and voila).

Having a 1366x768 display on a 12 or 14" screen is bad enough.
Having it on a 15" screen is disgusting to the point i feel it genuinely deserves a downvote.
    That alone kills the deal.
As mentioned by others get a Lenovo with FDD / QHD screen when their deals come up.

    • Even at this price?

      • Yes, even at this price.
In 2018 a 1366x768 display is no deal at any price.
Is was a disgusting resolution 10 years ago, a basic display now should be 1080p, with 1440p and 2160p being the premium / high DPI alternatives.
You're going to have to deal with the screen for long after you remember what you paid for the machine.

        • What if it was $5?

768p is exactly the resolution I'm looking for, but I'm an edge case. The deal breaker for me isn't the resolution but the TN panel. They could have used IPS or even VA and I would pay even double this for it, because no one makes it.

I am using low res content, which looks best on a low res screen. On a higher res screen, it will look shit due to scaling, or it will look tiny. Think some low res indie games of the pixel art variety. I'd like a machine dedicated to playing those and emulators. I also play retro games from the late 90s and early 2000s and even earlier. Those games ran at 640x480 or 800x600 and were 2D. Those will look awful on a 1080p display and even worse at 4K. That's why I'm looking for a laptop like this.

If I wanted the higher res screens, they're available everywhere. You can't throw a stone inside JB without hitting one. It's the low res IPS screens that are impossible to find. I would actually take this over the FHD/QHD/4K screen even if they were both the same price, if it was also IPS. That's because it's very easy to find a FHD IPS laptop, so even though it's technically superior, I'd be willing to pay more for the inferior display.

    • like I said above, lots of good laptops are still released with crappy TN HD panels. At the same time, it's super easy to upgrade to FullHD IPS yourself. Cost is under $100 for most models, and it takes 10 minutes to do in most cases.
So look at it this way: what a great opportunity to have a premium solution for a good price! Even though, I think that 800 is a bit too much even for this set of hardware.

      • Do you know if you can buy a 768p 15.6" screen in IPS?

        • quite possibly, but the market for those must be small. I haven't seen any in the wild
