This seems like a good deal, but in reality the use of this suitcase is limited; when filled, it will likely exceed luggage limits (not to mention be hard to lift when needed). But mostly, this suitcase exceeds the typical maximum permissible size for checked-in luggage, which is often a maximum of 158cm (height + width + depth). In some cases they allow more, but some less. Qantas and emirates use 140cm total. See also Skyscanner webpage

    • 81cm suitcases are classed as medium sized and are not designed as carry on, so nothing limiting in that. What is limiting is the weight which is about 2kg heavier than your typical light softcases.

      • I don't think you read my comment; you cannot check these suitcases in. I.e. you cannot bring them on a plane. At all.

Apologies I misread check vs carry on. But you can carry these on some airlines eg BA, Emirates, Jetstar (apparently) and even Qantas. But yes - this will fail most major airlines.

        • @gadget:

Qantas is 158cm total for international.
          These are 81 + 55 + 33 (169cm).

Emirates allows for 300cm, though 150cm for USA, Canada and South America.

I don't think I've ever seen Qantas actually check, though I wouldn't risk it. I would assume some American and Canadian airports don't have the facilities for larger bags like this. Elsewhere you may be fine.

        • @gadget: I actually think you'll get away with it most of the time, but it would be rather annoying to be far from home, and have some intern (eager to follow procedures to the letter) tell you you need to leave your luggage behind. I once had in intern tell me my luggage was 0.5kg over (moved a book to check-in luggage). In Hong Kong I have also had to check in a cabin case for being a few cm too tall (wouldn't let me carry-on). It's annoying when it does go wrong.
Lastly: if a suitcase is very large and heavy, I found it is more likely to get damaged by baggage handlers.

        • @dyl:

Oddly I couldn't find any size limit on the Qantas site for flights other than to/from the US (which is 158cm). It looks like only a weight limit (the usual 32kg) for the rest of the world.

        • @Make it so:

Yes I wouldn't want to risk getting a check in attendant who got up on the wrong side of bed that day lol.

      • he meant checked in luggage and i think 65-75 are medium 81 are considered large

        • Yes you are right, rechecked and they are in the "large" class so seems like pretty decent value for a hard case.

    • Thanks for the info, did not realise there is size limit for check ins. saw people check in alot of weird stuff, saw a whole kitchen sink at one time

I just travelled on Emirates last week. I only have 81cm suitcases. No issues mate.

  • I have checked the baggage dimensions of a few airlines and from the times i have flown with at least 4 or 5 different airlines. The bag i have exceeds almost all of them.

Most were concerned about you meeting the weight limit more than baggage dimensions. A fair few times i was 2kg over they let me through still.

  • If you are concerned about size, I also think the smaller option Bon Air 66cm is great value at $83 delivered (~70% off RRP). I didn't want to go too large, so I bought one a few days ago and am very happy with the quality. Not the lightest available, but still pleased for the low-cost Samsonite brand w/ 10 year warranty and decent quality materials.

BTW, it is ~$78 with Contiki code, but then falls below $80 free shipping.
