Sign Up for Telstra Broadband ($99/mth, No Lock-In, Modem Shipping +$9.95) & Get First Month Free @ JB HI-FI (In Store Only)

302

Was in store the other day to buy something unrelated and saw all these posters around the place for a free sign up offer from Telstra to the 99/month plan broadband.

I was wanting to swap over anyway, and it includes first month free and free modem and Telstra tv unit etc, and no lock in cost, being classed as a casual plan.

On further reading through the stuff there is a 9.95 charge for sending out of the modem and other things to the house.

I am looking to have cable connected before hfc comes to my area.

There is the ability to change tier of plans after using first free month.

All other offers from Telstra here seem to have expired.

Hope it helps some.

Oh. Sorry for late edit.

Guy who served me was pissed as well as he was ineligible for the deal as it excluded existing Telstra customers.

But then again just sign up under another family member I guess.

and it includes first month free and free modem and Telstra tv unit etc

Also includes free Foxtel Now for 24 months…

    • No. Telstra tv. As per what is listed on the 99 plan on the Telstra website.

      • +1

As per what is listed on the 99 plan on the Telstra website.

It shows 'Foxtel Now' for 24 months on the $99 plan. (also for $129 plan including sports)

      • +2

99 plan includes 24 months Foxtel Now basic package

  • This is NBN or not?

    • I think it's across the board from what I've seen in the past on Telstra deals.

    • +1

"All our bundles are nbn network ready so the transition is seamless when your area is ready for the nbn."

    • Will incur an NBN install fee if it's a fresh NBN connection

  • was this in store only?

    • Read the title? :)

        • Before he posted… nice try though.

        • @scuderiarmani:

          Before he posted…

May have already opened the page before the update…

  • What's the download quota?

    • All Telstra $99 plans were upgraded to unlimited data some time back so would be a bad deal if this came with a data quota.

      • There are limited deals too which you can downgrade to which don’t include the Telstra tv thing. But I think they are 50, 200, 1000 by memory.

Check website on Telstra for further.

  • That link doesn't work for me.

Putting "Telstra" into the search engine at JB doesn't help nor does NBN

    • It says in store only

      • Yes. Sorry. Associates store is jvhifi. So hence the website. But can be redeemed in store only.

“Ask one of our staff members for further details”.

        • +3

          Associates store is jvhifi.

          disclaimer

I have no affiliation with this deal…

      • No.

        Home internet.

  • OR go with anyone else and save almost $1000 over 2 years….

    • +3

Who else offers a cable plan at $1000 less?

  • +3

How can anyone assess if this is a good deal from the meagre info provided?
No speed, no quota, possibly some extra content (foxtel?).
No link to the customer summary, just a price quite a bit higher than most other ISPs and '1st month free'.

I guess if you intend to churn after 27 days it is a 'deal' whatever the other terms are.

    • Same as what is listed on the Telstra website although you get a free month and don’t have a contract and don’t have to pay for any of the listed stuff on the 99 contract terms.

    • Because, if you need Cable you have a choice of either Telstra (good) or Optus (crap).

This is essentially Telstra's Entertainment bundle, which is usually on a 24 month contract.

You get that, with no contract, and no casual package fee. Plus the first month free.

So if you need Telstra, it's better than going direct.

If you are going NBN though, then of course, you're free to shop around.

Telstra's entertainment bundle covers ADSL, Cable and NBN. So it covers all types of connection.

  • +2

Can you leave Telstra after the free month and keep the modem without any penalties?

    • Yes. Asked this question during my phone sign up in store.

      • Also confirmed today from when I was in JB signing up.

Why didn't you take a picture? This seems like a ghost deal until someone can verify this deal actually exists (including actual details of limitations etc).

    • -3

Feel free to call a store and ask them.

But your comment is a ghost comment until someone posts a picture of it?

This seems stupid. Why would I try and waste your time or mine.

Call up and ask. Or feel free to downvote if you can’t verify it.

        huh?

it's up to the person posting the deal to check it is valid and post a link. read the posting rules.

Not my job to follow up on some half @r$ed deal that someone posted. It's your job to ensure you've got sufficient information to verify that it is an actual deal before posting. You've wasted my time and time of others by posting this, and others have gone out of their way to get actual information to share on this 'deal': https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5964286/redir. Downvote incoming.

          Thanks.

          Although verified below.

Feel free to be so vitriolic at yourself for abiding by the same terms and conditions to this humble website.

Don’t get bent out of shape buddy.

Not everything in life is handed to you with a click direct link.

        • @pascher: Verified by others. So keep your smugness in check aye? Repeat the same behaviour and you'll get another downvote for any future 'deals' you post. Im bent and ready to whoop.

Network down this morning, twice in a month!

    • NBN or non-NBN?

      • +3

        Mobile (as a minimum)

    • +1

National (except NT) 4G call & data outage this morning, still issues with 3G & 4G.
Lot of upset customers. Telstra apologising😞

    • Third time this month there's been an issue.
(May 1, May 4 and today May 21)

  • Is this for maximum speed, so 100/5mb if your connection is capable or is there an optional speed pack or some bullshit? Is there any other connection charge like Line rental or is it $99 total?

No lock in seems very un-Telstra. Especially if they're throwing in devices. I suspect you've misread the deal but hope you haven't.

    • Telstra website has nbn 50mbs plan for $99 so assume this is same plan.
There is usually a charge to go to 100/40

      • Same. Speed boost applies too.

  • +1

Hmm, I got optus a few months ago after TPG copper was dropping too often and real test was going to cost TPG $300 so they were a pain to deal with.

Optus is 60 PM unlimited download ….. $200 for install and modem and separate wireless AC router. with no lock in, or free install and modem if sign up for 24 mths ….if you are in a area that will be HFC can stay with optus when they move you to NBN, or dump and move on and pay out the modem and router

Guess it's $60 pm vs $99 pm and how long you will be with a provider to break even before cost savings start.

    • +1

The $60 optus plan only allows your to achieve 12/1 speed once NBN takes over. On that plan the 12mb down isn't even guaranteed due to it being left behind by the new NBN CVC pricing structure. Just a warning for the future unless Optus picks up their act.

    • Got TPG for $59 with unlimited @50MBPS with a free modem and free connection and only 18 month contract.

    • The Optus HFC footprint is much smaller than Telstra's HFC. Not every area has access to both (or any).

For those that only have the choice between Telstra HFC and ADSL, this is a good deal.

  • I was just on the Telstra site chatting to a sales rep. I am already paying $90 a month out of contract and asked if i could get the $79 month to month connect plus casual plan. They wanted to charge me $120 one off fee to change to a casual plan.

But he did give me a phone number to call to talk to someone who may be able to waive the fee

    • I tried a lot chatting on line and was told to wait for more promos.

This is what triggered me to get out from tpg.

      • I would have gone elsewhere long ago but i have nowhere else to go

    • They wanted to charge me $120 one off fee to change to a casual plan.

They won't waive that fee, but can add 'extras' for free to make up for it…

      • I will just have to wait for the NBN then

        • If you sign up to a contract, you can switch to their NBN plans without penalty.

        • @jv:

I think there will be better options than Telstra for NBN when the time comes

        • @marko62:

I think there will be better options than Telstra for NBN when the time comes

Depends what other things they bundle in for you…

I'm getting free Foxtel, free Foxtel IQ3, free Telstra TV, and free calls all included for my $99 bundle…

Haven't activated Foxtel Now yet as I have Foxtel cable, but might do that and pass the account onto a friend…

        • @jv:
What the? how did u snag that?

        • +1

          @Hipsi:

What the? how did u snag that?

Made a written complaint after they removed some of my perks from my previous plan 3 years after my contract finished…

Complaints manager called me up and offered me 'extras' to move to one of the new plans…

          Webchat/Call doesn't help… You need to complain about something…

They also offered 50% off speedboost but I didn't take that up… (They couldn't give it for free but I tried)

        • @jv: I never had Foxtel but got the free speedboost to 100…

      • What “extras” are you referring to?

  • Ok, just contacted my local JB store.

    • in-store only
    • modem is free, pay for freight
    • standard install free
    • no casual fee
    • first month free
    • standard speed (50/5), unlimited (i.e. standard $99 plan)
    • expires 2/7/2018 (may be extended)
    • Telstra TV included (no 24 months Foxtel Now, obviously)
    • NBN connection fee applies where applicable

Can you negotiate where the port is installed in the house on a standard install? Just don't want to get slung extra fees just because of which building wall I want the port run to (difference of about 15-20 metres outside run).

    • +1

      standard speed (50/5)

This is the standard speed for HFC (aka Telstra Cable). The nbn tier 50 plan is 50/20.

      • True, though I'd be reticent to recommend this deal to anyone that's eligible for NBN when AussieBB have the same thing for $79.

I should also note that for HFC and ADSL this requires an active phone line, or you'll incur install charges.

        • The first month is free so still saving $79, can haggle a better deal when you leave 2-3 months later cause no contract.
They went through all that trouble to set you up… So having you disconnect right after without possibly even paying is an inconvenience to them.

If I'm not lazy, I'll sign up in stores tomorrow.

    • +1

Thank you for the effort jasswolf! Did you also gain an understanding whether it's a no lock-in contract and whether the rest of the cost of the router will need to be paid out if we cancel after a month?

      • Zero lock-in, seems to be similar to the existing welcome credits Telstra use.

I'd suggest Telstra are using what little competitive advantage they have left to snap up people in their HFC footprint, and expect the average user to be on the network for at least 6 months.

        • +1

Awesome :) We're moving into a new place tonight and have yet to secure a good deal for cable, so might get this in the meantime until we can try and bargain further with telstra. Thank you for the update!

        • That is exactly me when I move to a new house with HFC but no NBN yet.

    • The Foxtel now offer might be 50/50 chance you can get it.

On the 'flyer' it states that you need to sign up for the Foxtel Now offer before July (IIRC). However, when I saw the JB chick completing my form, it stated you'd only get the Foxtel Now if you signed up for a 24 month contract. She was however, fairly sure it also included the starter Foxtel now package. I guess we'll see when I get it installed, hopefully within the next week.

      • can you confirm if you received foxtel now with this casual plan?

        • +1

Still waiting for the install. I received the modem via courier, no Telstra TV though.

Then I had a confirmed technician as I need to have a connection (cable) installed for tomorrow, only to receive a call tonight saying I need to organise a technician if there's no existing cable. FFS. Try explaining that I already have an appointment. So let's see if anyone turns up.

Note: my dad works for Telstra (exchange tech) and also thinks Telstra's struggling with their systems and stuff ups.

I need the internet for work though, so it's been a pain waiting.

        • @thargelios: You should have your internet running by now then. Did you manage to get the foxtel now into the bundle?

    • +1

So the deal is (when contrasted with the entertainment plan):

      • Save $99 on sign up fee
      • Save $120 casual fee
      • Save $250 on modem
      • First month free
      • No lockin so can churn to someone else once NBN installed

      That's not too bad

    • Does it include tekephone?

      • Line rental only; it's a PAYG plan. I think it's $10 for unlimited local/national/mobile?

$15 credit for seniors as well.

  • Or telecube $75 100/10 $24 cheaper and twice the speed

  • Since I'm currently on Telstra cable out of contract paying $93/month, and I won't have access to NBN till this time next year, I think I might just be signing on for this, if only to get a Roku. Thanks pascher

    • if only to get a Roku. Thanks pascher

I've very happy with the Telstra TV.

I've no idea how it automatically changes by TV's input HDMI port when I press the Telstra TV home button though. Saves me having to use 2 remotes though.

    • 99% sure it's for new customers only. Unfortunately I also didn't take a photo when I was signing up in-store today.

      • +1

I did take a photo of the signage when I was signing up last night… but no idea how to add the picture here.

  • +4
  • Just called Telstra sales and verified that you do get 24 months of Foxtel Now included in this deal. It is only charged if you want to stick around for longer than the 24 months.

    • Really? I spoke to Telstra sales and they wouldn't give me any details about this deal (said I had to go in store)

      • I have already signed up, so I was just clarifying the details with them.

    • can you confirm if you receive foxtel now with this casual plan?

    • Hey mate can you check my latest comment and compare your "estimate for your order" email to mine?

  • Just signed up in stores, and it says expected connection date 23rd of May… Tomorrow!???

I mean I've tried ordering over the phone before and it was just stuck on pending so I cancelled it but this is 1 day????

Will update, good deal, no fees for new customers, but old customers can sign up too, I used my account from 2014 and it was accepted.

    • I was told I would need to wait 2 weeks for mine to be connected. But that is fine.

      • I got an email 30mins later saying…

"Your nbn connection is ready to go

You're in an area that’s nbn ready. As soon as have your modem you can set it up and be connected to the nbn network."

Got excited and changed cable into other ports and they dont work -_-

Ya no rush on nbn, zero downtimes.
