Where to stay a few days in Beijing

I'm taking a cruise that terminates in Tianjin and might as well spend a few days in Beijing. I've been to Shanghai and was fairly overwhelmed by the scale.

I'm looking to find a reliable place that is within easy walking distance to a train station. Can anyone recommend an area and possibly a specific property. I'll be travelling solo on this portion. I've travelled around SEAsia a bit but am not yet fully comfortable with these mega cities in China. I'm a mature female. Not looking to go the cheapest route necessarily, but think I'd be better placed in a property that can cater for foreign tourists. By cater, i don't mean food, but rather the maps, advice, and willingness to try to help.

Thank you.

  • We stayed at Novotel Xin Qiao. 10metress from a subway station and 10 minutes from Tianneman Square. Subway better than a taxi in traffic.

    • Thanks, I'll check that one out. An added benefit is that it seems ATO be near the mee mee sheep hotpot. 🤗

    • Sounds like place we stayed at. Was an awesome bakery next door.

  • Use booking.com? use the map to locate your hotel location?

    • Yes, I've tried that but none of the hotels seemed close to the subways. The Novotel that emli suggested sounds promising. I was close to the subway in Shanghai and still had a hard time finding my hotel. I want ease and I'd prefer no taxis.

      • well you can go by booking.com, hotel.com, or trivago.com if all fails. Build your own hotel? Pretty much all these websites covers 99% of the hotels.

  • Not looking to go the cheapest route

Then may I suggest a different forum

  • I did airbnb when I was there last year. reasonable apartment. $60 a night for 3 of us.

Beijing is as flat as a pancake. and bicycle hire (Ofo, mobike, etc) is literally everywhere. We would ride to any where close or ride to the subway (leave bikes) take subway and get more bikes to ride where ever. riding around is fun. just be careful as drivers don't care about your right-of-way,

if you like art then check out the "798 Art Zone" former industrial complex which has been converted into a sprawling artscape.

    • Yeah, nah. Last time I rode a bike was in Vietnam and although my daughter said she was sure I'd kill myself, or be killed, I did fairly well. I'll keep an eye out for bikes in case I go back for a more leisurely visit.

  • Thanks everyone. I booked the Novotel suggested and decided to get a club room. The Accor website gave me a great discount with free cancellation and offered an upgrade to a massive suite for only $56 more for the three night stay. Very happy.

    • We stayed in the club rooms too. Did not need to spend a cent on food. There is a bank next door for money exchange if needed. Breakfast on club floor or better in the main area. Evening drinks and food was our dinner. Water and tea/coffee available all day as were soft drinks.

We did a food by tuk tuk tour one night. Food was amazing and it took you to places you would never try or find.

      • Oh, that tour sounds good. Do you remember how much it cost and how to book it? Did you shop for pearls or anything in Beijing. I'd like to pick up some pearls. Not looking for top shelf, looking for unique ones at good value.
