      I think they give you a $450 gift card to offset the $549 phone. Not sure why they do it like this, and it's very poorly worded, but you only pay $99.

    I hate apple. But, Kogan price for 23Gb is $49 and you get the phone for $99 so sounds like a good deal. From the link you pay $99, not complicated.

          It's been a while since I have done the trip but there was always quite a few black spots between Petrie and Caboolture with optus.

          @Timothy-1: Yeah its been a while then, I'm a bit of a wireless network buff so I log my reception at all times, I haven't seen a drop there in over 15 years.

          Which is a good thing!

          Some areas dont have 4G, but HSUPA+ etc. (whatever your phone supports) is still faster than any home ADSL service.

          Not perfect, but I have a telstra hotspot in the car that logs….. actually a lot of things… about ym vehicle to my home server.

          I can see full time sync between my clients on my phone, and see plenty of drops on Telstra.
          I also run a fleet of over 200 Telstra phones and 100+ Optus.

          The only 3 locations I can recall in QLD that have better (or only)Telstra reception, are The outer suburbs of Bundaberg, Aurukun (who, with a population of only about 1k, is lucky to have a dedicated tower at all), and Goondiwindi.

          { EDIT: Actually, I'll add Hills District to that list, which is the shitty one there's no excuse for. The suburb is 'in a hole' literally, but Optus should have a repeater there by now….. }

          People can neg me all they want based on personal opinion;
          But odds are:

          1. They dont manage a fleet, so their sample size is probably limited to 1, or a small family.
          2. They're probably on devices that do NOT meet blue-tick ratings (And they travel places where you REQUIRE high reception phones, like the 'expanse' between Brisbane and the Sunny Coast.

          I was on Optus in spring hill. In my office you would be lucky to get any data, outside the building I would get full speed. Telstra on the other hand give me full speed in and out of the building.

          Also if it was to do with the phones, then switching to Telstra and it working better, would show that Telstra has better service right? Same phone….

          @OnlinePred: If reception is your sole indicator for service, arguably yes, but technically no.

          Without having an analysis done on your building, perhaps 750mhz penetrates your materials significantly better than 800mhz?
          If I had a cottage (wood) on your property, maybe I get full reception?
          We're both indoors (just one wood, one cement), at the same location.

          You'd have to be outside, with no obstacles in the way, with a decent spectrograph to actually know if the reception is truly better, or if the building is blocking a specific frequency more so.
          Testing on the roof of a building is usually best.

          I however am often also interested in throughput speeds, stability, and Latency.

          If I COMPLETELY discount 'reception' then Vodafone leaves the other 2 for dead, their 4G in good reception areas is just PHENOMENAL. But less 4G towers…..

          Optus is a 'best of both worlds' scenario. Low latency, stable throughput, and good reception.

          Telstra drops to 3G in areas extremely often.
          Most lay people don't notice, but if you run any full time RDP sessions, you'll notice it when they all drop out….

          Telstra seem to have a VERY good error correction protocol in play, dropped packets are super common, but re-sent reliably.
          Shithouse for any sort of secure connection, but great for people who like Social Media or other tween activities.

          However, Optus are usually not nearly as lossy, however when they are, you'll often need a refresh of the connection or such.

          It just depends, if you use your phone for work, I'd pick Optus any day.

          If you use it for facebook and time wasting, I'd understand why Telstra would feel better, but I'd still end up on Optus, because $22 for 10GB, compared to almost $50 on telstra is a significant enough saving to warrant 1 or 2 page refreshes a day.

          @miicah: Any specific area I should check? I drove through there the other week and never saw below -88db.

          Do you happen to have any sort of frequency scanner you could run in that building?

          All these reports of 'OK outside, bad inside" suggest building materials, and not the actual coverage, to be the problem.

          We have 3 sites out that way, all have simple 3dbi (actually one has a 0~1dbi omni) on their buildings, and their coverage is great.
          -60ish db, and about 80MBps uplink.

          Im not going to try to argue that Telstra probably has better penetration for low gain devices, but in this day and age a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people use 4G for internet, not calls.

          So that days of whether or not your phone can make a call in this area, is a moot point, compared to 'can my dongle get reception', as dongles usually have much better antennas.

          the trip from brissie to sunny coast is horrendous on Optus ..Bribie island, Burpengary…even Australia zoo one of the biggest tourist attractions in QLD has terrible Optus service

          @OnlinePred: only for that location, both carriers have over 3500 towers each …. so it depends which of those 3500 towers is better for each user some are better for telstra some are better with optus …..depends on your needs and location.

          @MasterScythe: We don't get reception in our work office with Optus, also in Sydney if you are at central at peak, you don't get any data. I would pay more money for the pure joy of having data in all locations including my home, work, train, bus.

          Also sitting on 35gb at $49 per month over 12 months - $200 jb voucher means $32 a month. The main benefit is that I can actually get reception, and use my phone.

          @MasterScythe: You should try Sydney, this is Optus in a nutshell. I live 4 Km from CBD, and could only get reception outside my building. Now on Telstra I get reception at all corners of the apartment, and I even get reception in the underground garage which is crazy as I couldn't even make calls from the garage while on Optus. Also in Sydney central station at peak, Optus struggles to offer any data, and there is no data while going through the tunnel towards the airport, meanwhile after switching to Telstra on the same phone, I get reception in all areas. It's like night and day.

          South australia was amazing though. I took the busses to every end of their route for sight seeing, and basically never dropped a bar.

          @OnlinePred: it’s a reminder that if you really need a watch badly enough have a spare ……you can be with more than one carrier if you need a higher level of availability ….. but most people don’t so they take the cheap,path ….one carrier …i used to have an optus and telstra sim in my phone when my job required the coverage and up time.

          Optus is definitely lacking in Melbourne CBD and Great Ocean Road route. Optus was shocking next to Yarra River. In Perth optus is serviceable and decent for value. So your milage may vary depending on your own locality.

          Came from Brisbane CBD, now in Sydney Darlinghurst. In my buildings I could barely get reception, while others on Telstra were laughing. Since I switched, I can even get reception in my underground carpark, which Optus could never give.

          I currently live in Rosebery in Sydney, of which 3 Optus towers have been down for 2 years. I got no reception in my apartment - I had to stand on the balcony to make calls.

      outage is part of the telstra “ chill time” plan ….do other stuff like take a walk. don’t talk on the phone at supermarket checkouts and ignore the cashier ….have a coffee with friends and talk to them instead of checking your phone ….. don’t answer you bosses calls as the network is supposed to be dead when it actually isn’t, use a real landline as they are still working …..etc.etc,

      lots of things to so when the network is dead on the telstra “ chill out”plan.

          Well I had Optus, and I got no service in my carpark, home, or at the building I work in EVER - not just once a month or so, EVER. So again….This is for Telstra, not Optus.

          Also paying the same as I did with Optus, but I can use my phone more which is really great!

          So it depends if you are okay with it going down once every couple of months (of which it hasn't for me yet), or not being able to use your phone at certain locations ever.

          What a bargain!
          It generally works well and there are times that the quality can vary however for that price, who cares!

          At least you don't get thrashed 40 cents per call for 1300 numbers by Telstra that claims that their plans are unlimited LOL.

          @vinni9284: I turned off 1300 numbers. I get VOLT HD calls with Telstra and RCS also. I am also getting 35gb. Not sure how you survive on 2gb haha. Anyway nice plan! I tried voda but they were equally as bad as Optus in my area, if not worse.

          I might be in the rare few, but I actually need to be able to receive phone calls on my phone….

          at work desks have landlines and they were working and there is an sla for landlines…. if hoping for mobile coverage there is no guarantee for mobile as you get black spots etc … so think of it like you were in a blacksplt for 2 hours …..or you were in a band 28 zone that your xiaomi didnt have coverage for ….

          there is no sla for mobile services as they can’t guarantee coverage, it is best effort ….

          people need to read the fine print on what you get with a mobile service not what they want or hope to get.

          if you needed to call an ambulance turn on roaming and use another carrier.

      According to the CIS the 'early termination charge' for the plan is $354.

      So, you could sign up to buy the phone for $99, pay for the first month of the plan for $49, then immediately cancel and pay $354. Total cost $502. That's only a saving of 8.6% off the RRP of just buying the handset outright. You could find it cheaper elsewhere outright (Kogan, Officeworks, eBay deal, etc.)

      It's because they refer to themselves as "Australia's best mobile network", and charge a corresponding price premium to have full access to that network, and then they have repeated outages, with 3 outages in May alone so far.

      Plus there's a bit of residual annoyance from people who've had Telstra problems before (if you ever had to fight Telstra to get a problem with you home phone line or ADSL fixed, pre-NBN, you'll know exactly what I mean). Plus they kept upping their line rental charges when there was no genuine competition (e.g. Telstra's most basic line rental with messagebank and call number display and private number [i.e. all the functions you get as standard with a mobile voice service] went from ~$13/month in 2000, up to $42/month a few months back).

      So basically: entrenched incumbent + history of monopoly price gouging + bureaucracy + arrogance + repeated outages = put the boot in.

      I went from Optus $49 sim only plan, of which I got no data at work, at home, and I got no signal at all in my basement garage. Switched to Telstra $49 sim only + $200 JB voucher, and I have no reception issues ever. There is not one place I find that I have no data or signal. I am in Sydney inner btw.

    Telstra under the current CEO is a sham. I used to be proud being a telstra mobile user on a iPhone contract. These days with outages, it not even funny for what they charge.

      I've been with Telstra for about 4 months now, and haven't experienced a single outage. Do they only affect certain areas or something?

      For me it's crazy that Optus charges almost the same yet offers no reception at my work or home for the last 2 years.
