        • @Aquaius:

Each time you apply and are denied, that's going to be visible in varying forms to other institutions you apply to. One way is that they'll see enquiries on your file whilst you list no existing commitments, another is that CCR might show those rejections. More applications without addressing the root cause will not make it easier for you, I would think.

How long have you been working for?

        • @trotsky: Not very long, hitting 3 months in a week or two, I'm guessing why this is the problem, before my current job my annual income was around $8,000, is the only option to keep working longer? How long should I wait until my chances are better?

        • It’s the same dodgy sounding question i asked a while back. FAT STACK in the bank. But no income at that time, in my name. Never bothered.

        • @dinna89: it's also highly irresponsible and would get them in trouble with ASIC

        • Has anyone tried using overseas income as proof to get an Australian card? I'm an Australian citizen temporarily working overseas and it would be great to be able to keep churning credit cards.

    • I got my first Amex card when I was a student without income and I got an approval with a limit of $2000

  • just received my card applied through the finder offer, will see if the 50 dlrs fee can be waived as I haven't activated it.

  • -4

I am still unsure what the deal is. I really only want the 75k points from the Visa.

I hate Amex as there is a merchant fee almost every where.

Can I get this deal for just the Visa + 75k points after target spend?

    • +5

      Hardly a fee everywhere.

    • +1

When you get (fully) approved by Westpac, you'll also get a separate email from Amex saying "We've received your Card application" with your application reference number. So there may be a window of opportunity to cancel the Amex application before they send out the card. The second credit check would have already happened, though.

    • +1

That amex ignorance will cost you big points. Amex def the way to go if your chasing points :)

      • Excuse my ignorance, but how is this so with the usual 18 month break between AmEx cards?

    • I use the Amex for 90% of my expenditure without any fees. Some bills that state cannot be paid by Amex can be if paid via Post Billpay and PayPal and still earns 1 point per dollar. It is certainly worth trying as this deal generates double the points from Amex as Visa.

  • Thanks OP - been waiting for a zero fee card (with bonus Qantas points).

Will probably only provide documents for the Westpac card, and ignore Amex's request - another $3k spend for a measley 15,000 points doesn't stack up.

    Cheers

    • Remember the points earn on the Amex is double. Although I think there are other AMEX cards with better bonuses if you have not had one in 18 months.

      • They ended up approving me for both - Westpac automatically provided all my information, and 2 CC's are on the way now.

Can anyone recommend a fully refundable purchase (Aussie based) for the 2nd card?

I've read about flights and hotel, but flights generally charged CC fees (guessing not refundable fee), and hotel booking sites (ie booking.com, hotels.com, etc) seem to occur overseas, with an overseas fee applicable.

        Any ideas?

        • +1

You could go for giftcards you know you'll use eventually (woolies/coles)

  • Applied in the previous offer.
Got the westpac one approved but declined for amex.
Spent the 3k required in the first month. Just waiting for the points now.

    • Copped merchant fees, or found a good way to spend that much without it.

Hopefully there’s a wiki here for this question, as I’m sure it comes up every time.

      • Strangest neg I’ve seen in a while. No sense or explanation.

    • Have they charged you the $50 annual fee for Qantas?

      • Yes they did.
I applied through the finder post which had the fee applicable.

  • -2

going to apply for this card/s just for sh!ts and g!ggles.
don't need the card, the points might be useful one day…

  • So whats stopping someone and refunding the sale once you have points?

    • +2

The time it takes them to credit you the points after you meet minimum spend

      • You can get around this by purchasing a full far flight for say 6 months time, i.e one that you can cancel for a full refund without penalty

        • Hello,

Can you recommend a fare to purchase with no fees, ie CC fees, overseas transaction fees, etc.

          Thanks

        • @movieman: Expedia, book accommodation that shows as fully refundable. Done this multiple times for various credit card offers no problems.

        • @chickenface:

          Thanks Chickenface.

So just to confirm, I book $3,000 + on say Fiji accommodation for 6+ month's time, (shown as fully refundable) and the entire transaction cost gets refunded, including any 2-3% international Expedia fee?

        • @chickenface:

For example, looking at the following, would the $3148 be charged, and $3148 be refunded in full if I cancel, as it includes taxes etc. What about credit card overseas fees?

          Thanks

Applied for the finder offer earlier today =( could have saved myself $50 with this one. Oh well.
Anyone else find westpac’s income verification process unsettling? Their preferred method is to log in through their website to my (non westpac) banks online banking system, so that westpac can verify deposits that are my regular income. So I’m giving westpac (or, according to their ts&cs, their service provider) the details to log into my Nab/cba/anz/etc account. It just reads like a “what not to do on the internet”.
If it helps anyone I just submitted payslips instead and was approved within a couple of hours.

    • Is there anyone has experience of if we applied through finder offer, is there any way to ask the bank to waive $50 reward fee with this deal? Except for cancelling the cards & reapply all over again?

    • +3

wtf? i would never allow them to do that.

  • -1

Can you apply for just the VISA card and not the AMEX and still get the 75,000 points?

  • Does applying for this card combo automatically make me unable to apply for any of the AMEX bonus points for 18 months?

Just to confirm, is it possible to just spend the 3k on the VISA for the 75k points and ignore the AMEX card?

  • -1

If you don't take up the Amex card (by not sending your income documents as some have suggested) I wonder if you become ineligible for the points on the Westpac Visa component.

  • How do the altitude points in this deal compare to the qantas points in the other deal?

    • +1

      2 Altitude Points = 1 Velocity Point
      3,000 Altitude points = 1,200 KrisFlyer Miles
      2 Altitude Points = 1 Enrich Mile
2.5 Altitude Points = 1 Asia Miles point
      180 Altitude Points = 1 Airpoints dollar

  • Is this how the banks changed from Issuing a complementary AMEX to their usual Visa/Master card? So essentially you apply for two separate cards now and gets credit checked twice, at the same time.

    • Yes, but some people are advocating not taking them up on the entire offer, only part of the offer.

  • What's the highest number of time someone has been approved for one of these deals from the same bank?
I've done ANZ 2 years in a row, and this would be my 2nd go with Westpac (assuming they approve it).
Do they ever stop offering them to people like us that milk them?
Just want to know if I should start saving the points for long-term economy useage, or keep blowing them on business (assuming the supply is ever-lasting).

    • +4

They make a killing of people who cant replay their debts.
Banks are always ahead otherwise it wouldn't be offered.
      Just milk them dry.

      • +1

        I know.
        That wasn't my question…

  • What can I use the points for aside from the flying component- e.g. converting to cash, gift cards, etc.? In other words, what's the value of the offered awards points if I don't plan to fly?

    • points are approximately 100 per $AUD being sold on OzB

  • Just a heads up people had a lot of trouble with the Finder deal regarding the Amex card. Rather than 1 account with 2 cards you're essentially signing up for 2 cards here, thus the separate point earn and annual fee.

    • And 2nd hit to your credit file.

    • Not sure why that's a neg considering this has been the case for all past Altitude deals the last few months - it has been discussed in previous deals.
The only "1 account with 2 cards" is CBA and even they are no longer offering from September and completely removing from November.

tl;dr - Bundle deal - Westpac Issued Visa - Amex Issued AMEX - each have their own annual fee - points are combined in to Altitude rewards scheme (but for the welcome offer you need to spend on the individual cards)

      • +1

It's a neg because it a pain to chase 2 companies for bonus points. Also you're better off burning your AMEX 18 month cooldown on a different AMEX deal.

        • Not sure about the chasing. +1 has Altitude platinum and I can confirm the welcome bonuses have come in for both cards within a day or 2 of the transaction that made the limit.
True you could wait 18 months but there are some who want to churn without annual fees. I don't know many standalone Amex offers that have $0 annual fee. YMMV but it's still a good deal for what it is.

    • Can you get the deal without the Amex and still be eligible for 75k points?

  • Just applied and was approved. Now to see what counts towards eligible purchases.

I do a lot through bpay which is excluded. Does anyone know if ezidebit is counted as bpay? It doesn’t show as bpay on my statements. Looks like ezipay also do bpay.

  • +1

Just FYI, I rang westpac to clarify about the 12m rule and being additional card holders.

I can confirm that if you were simply an additional card holder, you do not count as being a Westpac customer. Therefore the deal is eligible for you to apply for and get the bonus points.

  • Best of luck with card approval process. After 3 weeks of rubbish from NAB and Point hacks deal June 2018, I'm still waiting for my next request from their approval centre for income or debt financials sent up to 3 times already.Communication is abhorrent with 3 13/1300 numbers, different operators, and the most inefficient system known to man. I'm hanging in as 115,000 points are at stake.

    • OMG same. NAB are the worst… dare I say, even worse than trying to deal with Citibank's process.

Such a waste of time. So many manual checks. Additional cardholder has to go into head branch to collect card and prove 100 points of ID. Got told no QFF member number was linked to the account … then an hour later of handballing around, they tell us there was actually a QFF number in the system.

They told us that the 115k points will take up to 90 days to appear.

Be ready for a fight, because NAB are useless.

      • 115k points credited on first statement for me. Was quite a bit of screwing around because I made the mistake of listing investment income and they didn't like my docs for it. I qualified without it so eventually they just removed it from my application.

        • Oh damn, we didn't get ours on our first statement so looks like I will be fighting this later.

Great news for you though! Good stuff

      • Same for Westpac supplementary and primary have to front the Bank with id check.

  • I have asked Westpac and waiting for a response. I have an Earth Black card. It's not mentioned that people with Westpac Earth cards are ineligible, it only mentioned Altitude cardholders as being ineligible. Anyone know the answer? I assume Earth customers are eligible as it's an old product so they probably want us to switch to altitude.

    • +2

I have an Earth Black card through my home loan, last year I got an Altitude Black and got the bonus points no problem. I signed up for the Altitude Platinum through Finder recently, haven't made the minimum yet but will in a few weeks, but I can't imagine it'll be any different this time (ie yes, you should get points).

      • Westpac just got back to me and said earth card holders are not eligible. I doubt they have any system controls in place for this though, and the terms clearly only mention altitude holders being ineligible. I might persevere and hope it works out.

  • is there a minimum salary requirement? would 50kPA be enough to apply? any experience

    • 30k from reading previous comments

  • Does the 18 month waiting period on amex cards mean if you have held one you are not eligible for bonus points or if you have applied for one in the past 18 months?

  • What about if I want a supplementary card? Do they charge then for this?

    • +1

Pretty sure no fees for additional cardholder

  • Applied, thanks op.

  • Applied…But $6k to spend, better put everything on the cards

  • Does anyone know if local council rates are an eligible purchase? Paying rates for the first time this year so not sure how that works.

All utilities and such are eligible though, aren't they?

    • From the bottom of the page:

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

      • Thanks. I always hear that government services were excluded so wasn't too sure how that worked.

    • +1

I pay these very easily by using Post Billpay and PayPal, and often this works using Amex even where they say it is not accepted. Also this way it gets the full points.

  • I already have a westpac altitude black madtercard which comes with my home loan. Does anyone know if im still eligible for this offer?

  • -2

*Annual card fee waiver: $0 first year annual card fee promotion. The first year annual card fee waiver is available when you apply for a new Westpac Altitude Platinum Visa Card between 3rd July and 12th September 2018. The first annual card fee of $150 will be debited on the 12 month anniversary of the first transaction (including balance transfers) on your account and annually thereafter.

You have to keep the card for 12 months until you can get $150 back??? Am I reading it right???

    • +1

It's saying the first $150 annual fee will be debited/deducted from your account after 12 months. There will be no debit for any annual fee in the first 12 months - they won't debit and then re-credit it to you after 12 months.

  • +1

    Got approved yay

  • +1

Wow, I got rejected for the Westpac and Amex card. Really strange, first time I've been rejected for a credit card. I've got two others.

    • Did they give a reason?

I have previously been rejected twice by Westpac after initial approval. All they would tell me on the phone was that it was a general criteria failure. That was more than a year ago and I'm not sure if I should apply again and risk another credit score hit.

    • Applied on last Sat night around 6pm, conditional approved & uploaded all required documents.
Both cards been approved this afternoon - 2pm by Amex and 3pm by Westpac.

One of the most efficient credit card application process so far. By the way, I am new to Westpac, never have any business with them.

    • +1

Do you know what your credit rating score is? I was rejected back in October 2017 as well, and I'm pretty sure I had an average credit score at the time (I applied for waaaaay too many cards for points).

      See https://creditsavvy.com.au and https://www.getcreditscore.com.au/

      • Thanks, I checked in with both and am "Good".

Only thing I can think is I didn't have enough money in the account. I'll try again a month from now.

      • Was about to register on 'getcreditscore' until I read the fine print of "I consent to being contacted by GetCreditScore and their partners, Equifax and their related entities, and for them to use and disclose my personal information for business and marketing purposes.I can opt out of direct marketing by any of the above entities by contacting the entities at any time." Would much prefer if the default was 'opt in. The first one seems better……

  • Noob question: do you have to have a qantas ticket to use a free qantas lounge visit?

  • +1

Got my approval and financial table email. It lists the annual fee and the qantas fee, and doesn't mention that it's free in the first year. Hopefully i dont get charged.

    • I had this happen during previous offer and it was free.

  • Hi
Can I cancel these cards once spend $3000 and still gets points after 12 weeks ? or I have to keep these cards active untill points arrive.
    Thanks

    • Perhaps you can try it and let us know?

  • +1

Got approved for Westpac initially and was going to leave the Amex one. They ended up calling me and approved me over the phone with no information. I was going to say I didn’t want it but they had already done the credit check so I just went with it.

    • +3

I got an email from Amex saying "we received your application", then 1 min later "weve approved your application"

My AMex will be a drawer dweller.

  • Thanks for post OP. I had a question for everyone as I'm new to credit cards. Is this method pretty much what I should follow? Activate both cards. Leave Amex at home/never use it. Spend $3k in 90 days with the Westpac Visa card. Receive 75k Qantas. Cancel Both cards before 12 months but not before 90 days.

    Repeat process with ANZ?

    • It should be okay to cancel once you receive the bonus points.

    • If you receive the Amex and can spend the money you may as well do so to get the bonus as you would have suffered a credit check. Cancel when bonus points have reached your Qantas FF accounts. Repeat with ANZ if your credit score is good enough, maybe even do it simultaneously in case your score goes down. Consider whether you will need to apply for a home loan, even cancelling a card can lower you score. This has happened to me. It can take 6 to 12 months to go up again.

  • do supplementary cards count towards the $3k spend or does it have to be the primary cardholder?

    • Spend on supplementary card counts.

  • Well it seems that people are mentionjng 2 credir checksm. Has anyone anyone actuallly it is two checks?

Im thinking about applying but already have the explorer which makes me still eligible

    • +3

I can confirm two consumer credit enquiries on my credit file. One from "AMERICAN EXP NEW ACCTS NSW", one from "WESTPAC CARD SERVICES".

      • Thanks for that.
        Decisions decisions decisions.
        90k with 2 credit hits

Im thinking of doing the anz as well
