    Less than impressed.

Submitted documentation, received nothing to say it had been approved. Card turns up in the mail. Eventually got it activated. Asked about Amex, basically got told they don't know and was given the number for amex WTF?

    • +1

Separate approval process for the amex.

  • +1

Just leaving this link for reference (assume there'll be some of you in the same boat)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/381029?page=3#comment-6120… (credit to @alecsmart)

Applied and approved for this card through the finder deal. Receive first statement, no sign of Qantas points even though showing on statement.
Called through to the Earth Service Centre who said the card wasn't linked to my Qantas membership. Gave them my membership details, the operator linked it and was able to provide me with my total points earned on the account so far (including the bonus points). She said to expect these points to credit my Qantas account next statement date.

Call them on 1300 132 431 after you've received your card and activated to ensure it is linked to your Qantas account.

    • I called 1300 859 100 / (+61 2) 9155 7722 instead and they said it was already linked.

      • Great! At least they got it right for some!

        • +1

I should add that I also applied through the Finder deal and I wasn't an existing customer. Perhaps that was the difference. Had to pick up my card and activate it at a branch (I received an email but didn't get a phone call). Good customer service experience for me. I also cancelled the Amex application over the phone after three days of receiving nothing from them except for the "We've received your Card application" email.

  • So my AMex got mailed to me… but I have to pick the Visa up from the local Westpac branch? What the

  • oops, I applied, got a conditionally approved email, and a few text msgs

    Ineeded to verify income,
I clicked on the link and it asked me for a few details again,

and it says application received and approved, here is your app number (new one)

does this mean ive done 2 credit checks????

    • hello hello…say that when you call the helpline..and report back.

      • Yes i certainly will.
Just will wait until one of them comes through

  • It looks like BPAY and BPAY Like transactions are excluded from the required spend. That rules out a lot of things like utilities and car rego and health insurance correct?

    • +1

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on this. Bpay is excluded on Visa only. With those you can always see if the provider takes cc directly (e.g via their own payment website).

With Visa - Government charges are excluded from normal points accrual from what I read. Looks like they may still be valid towards the $3k bonus points spend though.

Amex do not participate in bpay but if the provider allows postbillpay, you can load the Amex to your PayPal account and pay via paypal (on postbill pay)

I don’t think there are restrictions on points on government spending with Amex.

Would love to hear other people’s interpretation. It’s quite confusing!

    • +1

pay direct on the billers website.

  • edited..

  • Yes it is confusing. I have had customer service staff at one Bank tell me completely different things, when I asked one to check he came back with a completely different answer. I have been told that certain spend does not count for points accrual but when I looked at the statement it did. Many T&C state government spend and utilities do not count but I have found that if you use BillPay/Paypal they certainly do and have checked item by item on my statement with Amex. I have the Westpac Black Mastercard/Amex bundle and looking at a recent MasterCard statement I received points at the rate of $1=.75 points for all my purchases. This included VICROADS (Government) payment on their website and MYKI recharge. And a direct debit to a Telco (Utilities). This would most likely apply to this card but at the lower earn rate.
I must say that the VISA earn on this card is poor and if you can qualify and a good bonus points offer is available I would get the ANZ Black card which offers $1=1 point, but has no AMEX availability.

  • Has anyone spent the 3k and received their points yet? Wondering how long it takes before points are granted..

  • Just paid a decent sized ATO bill using the Visa.
hoping that it counts towards the spend, it doesnt say otherwise in the T&C.

    • Bit risky relying on hope. Mind you if you call to check you may not get accurate answer, see my comment above.

      • Meh, I had to pay it somehow.

    • +1

For those who are in a similar situation and don't want to rely on the call centre to give you the right answer, this method might be of help: Pay a small portion of the bill (e.g., $2 for 1 point), then change your statement date to just after when the payment would be processed. You can work out if the transaction counts (for regular points) from the statement.

As for whether a purchase qualifies for bonus points, you won't know with absolute certainty until it's too late.

      • SocietyBox this is a good suggestion for Visa spend however the AMEX statement period is not the same as the points transfer to Qantas period and the 2 cannot be reconciled. I have had this discussion with their call centre and they confirm. For council rates you should be paying with AMEX as the earn rate is double on that spend. I have confirmed with the call centre that my spend on council rates using BillPay and Paypal counted.

    • Doesn't it clearly state it doesnt apply? however I wonder if they track all this….. like when amex does promos and say what exludes"Gift cards" but everybody buys em and it works…

      • Where does it say that?
The T&Cs for the bonus points say

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account

Nothing about that says "EFTPOS transaction with the ATO".

        • It's a card condition for earning points in general, not just for the bonus points:

Rewards Points for Westpac Altitude Cards: The earning and redemption of Altitude Points and Qantas Points is subject to the Altitude Rewards and Altitude Qantas Terms and Conditions. Purchases that are not eligible to earn Reward Points are set out in the Altitude Terms and Conditions. For example: payments to the Australian Tax Office, cash advances and BPAY payments do not earn Reward Points. You do not receive points if your card account is in arrears for 2 consecutive statement cycles and in other circumstances.

        • @meowmeowmeow: why would the conditions to earn bonus points and the conditions to earn points in general be different?

It seems purposely vague so I’ll be arguing it once I hit the $3k spend.

      • Calmerancer, yes it's a bit like that because definition of Government spending varies and when you call them they can interpret that as councils being government. I have received points for paying Vic Roads car reg. on their website, surely government. That was easy to confirm as it was on Visa and the statement showed that all my spending had earned points.

  • Applied on Saturday midday, got approved Monday lunch time, I had a text from Amex to call back, they confirmed ID and confirmed approved. Now waiting for the cards, before going shopping this week end :)

  • When do u get the bonus points? Do u have to spend 3k on each card to get it ?

    • You spend $3k on the Westpac you get 75k points and $3k on the amex you get 15k, my understanding is that you can spend only on the Westpac and get your points though you still have to apply for both. But I ll confirm when card/ spending and points happen

      • +1

I spent the required 3k amount on just the westpac (wasn't approved for some reason with the amex). Got the 75k bonus points (was credited on my second statement as they didn't have my qff details on record).

  • Card approved on the 10th and email saying cards are ready on the 14th. Went in and they didn't have them and said to wait a little longer. Still no card.

    AMEX arrived on the 18th.

    • I had a similar thing. Email came through Sunday saying they were ready for collection. Went in on Monday and the lady said the mail doesn't come until 3pm most days. So I had to go back the next day.

I also had to ring them yesterday chasing my additional card holder card. I rang the general line and they lady was like "You need to talk to new applications or existing applications. I'm not sure which. I'll give you both numbers so you can try them"….

Not an impressive customer experience so far.

  • Applied on the 26/7 (saturday), got a call on the Monday, receiced the cards today (thursday 26/7), the visa doesn't seem to work with apple pay :( it's a bit annoying might need to check if the additional cardholder is free or not. Now time to spend $$$

    • +1

Westpac don’t like Apple Pay. Additional cardholder is free.

  • Applied today, was 'conditionally approved' immediately. Probably helped that I already had a Westpac account as have had a 'free' mastercard with them for years. Thanks, OP.

    • +1

…and approved for both. Have worked out I can buy discounted Coles/Woolworths gift cards with Amex through work, so will do that if it looks like I might not be going to hit that $3k in 3 months.

  • Does any of you was able to double check on the westpac website to see if the qantas frequent flyer number was entered ? I know I did but I just wanted to see it there somewhere to make sure I ll get qantas points. Thanks

  • If I already have 2 Amex's, and then apply for this will Amex not do the credit check (ie auto reject based on 2 Amex's held)? ( I don't want the amex, but I dont want the extra credit hit more).

    • I already have an Amex (platinum edge) and was approved for this one, I think you have to apply for both card to be able to get the points. (to be confirmed though).

    • +1
      • Edit - I called u Amex. They said you can have 2 Amex issued cards plus the westpac one. Also, even with 2 x Amexs I'm still eligible for the bonus points.
  • I notice that I was charge 150 annual fee and 50 qantas rewards fee, wth??? Any idea how this can be rectified?

  • +1

I got my statement on August 8, but the Qantas points didn't get transferred to my FF account. I even called up half way through the month to make sure it was all OK, and still it didn't happen. I guess i'll have to call up today to question them again :(

    • Same.

      • I called and they said they dont have my QFF number. Doesn't make any sense, as i gave it to them with the application AND i called to confirm and they read the number back to me. Must be some broken process that clears the QFF number for no reason. Now I have to wait a month to see if it worked.

        • +1

Interesting, my number was on my statement with the amount of points I earned that period, yet nothing in my account yet.

        • @theguyrules:

Yep all my info was on my statement too. Sounds like you have the same issue. All you can do is call, update the number again and hope that it's fixed next month.

        • @meowmeowmeow: Just called and they have my info on file.
They just said it can take 4-6 weeks to get the points.

  • First statement in, $3000 spent now let see how long it takes until I get my 60k points. Got the amex statement too but didn't hit the $3k yet so next month.

    • Does it say on the statement that you have earned "bonus points" or anything?
Ie on mine there was a section for points earned, and the last statement said something like

      Points earned: 800
      Bonus points: 0

(as I hadnt yet hit the $3k spend)

      • nope :( same thing 1621 points earned 0 bonus, so now time to wait and see. Not planning on using the card anymore, need to finish the 3k on the amex :) and back on my anz visa black

        • Extremely frustrating! You’ll have to wait like 1-2 months to see if the bonus points come in.

        • @theguyrules: surely it's for us to keep the card longer, then the following year we can't apply again for the card :(

        • @Gooddeal21: Maybe, but as soon as I see the points I'm cancelling anyway :P

  • anyone know if you add an additional card holder to your westpac issued card later on will there be any annual card fee for it in future years?

    • +1

Yes you can add an additional card holder. No fee

  • can you cancel your westpac issued card after the qantas points land in the qff account and kept the amex westpac issued open or are they both linked and you need to close both?

    • +2

      Yes you can cancel one

  • I cant seem to find, how many Altitude Rewards points I would get if I went with that option instead of Altitude Qantas.

  • Hi All.

Whilst I have received the bonus points on my Westpac card, I am yet to receive the bonus points on the Amex card.

    Has any one experienced this?

Amex suggested this can take up to 8 weeks; however with previous Amex cards, the bonus points usually come through within a couple of days of the spend criteria being met.

    Thanks.

    • I'm the opposite - have got the points from my Amex, but not the Visa….

      • Yeah, I've received absolutely nothing into my Frequent Flyer account from the Visa spend.
At this rate it won't be til November that I'll get my bonus points (if I've met their vague spend conditions)

        • +2

Oooh - just checked my statement, and at the end of the text version it states I've earned the 75k bonus points. It also says "Your Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership number : Supplied". When I checked the pdf version, it actually stated my number, so I guess I just need to wait.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: Awesome, good news!

        • @theguyrules: Yep - so if you're wondering just wait until you can access your Westpac Visa statement online and you can confirm with that if you've qualified as well as if they've got the right FF details.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: Sweet. I just want to know if my spending qualified (some was iffy), then I can cancel lol

    • Oh nice, to give us an idea could you please tell us when you spent the $3000 and when you received the points?
So far only spent on the visa but nothing yet.

      • Personally I'm planning a major family holiday overseas, so have used the cards for things like booking accomodation. That combined with paying for the usual bills has meant it was very easy to hit the mark quickly ie within 3 weeks or so with both cards. So I guess that's both good and bad…. ;-)

My points from Amex appeared a few days before my Amex statement came through, and as noted the bonus points are on my Visa statement from a couple of days ago but they have not yet appeared in my Qantas account.

  • +1

So my bonus 15 000 points are my amex account already, 3 days after the last transactions to reach $3000. I asked Amex they said they will be on my qantas account 6-7 days prior next statement. So I expect them next week.
Now waiting on the 75 000 from the visa spending

  • Does anyone know when the 75K points on the visa will show up on my statement? I've spent 3k but got the statement and it's just got the standard points and no bonus.

    • +1

      Second statement.

      • +1

I just got my second statement and they weren't there. Also have called up about 5 times to tell them my Qantas points didn't transfer…they told me they fixed it, and then this month the same thing happens again. It shouldn't be this hard…

        • Keep on at them.
I got mine second statement. So too others. But keep on at them I guess.
          Good luck!

        • @Heybargain: fingers crossed, second statement is coming soon. Just got the Amex transferred to my qantas. so juste waiting on the 75k and then I can cancel.

    • mate i am on my 4th statement upcoming so hopefully it will be in that…

  • Question on cancellation for anyone who has done it: I assume I need to cancel separately with Westpac and AMEX?

    • +1

      Yes indeed

    • Also are you able to cancel one and keep the other. I want to keep the Amex. This is a new type of card but I would assume I could as the bills come separately.

      • +1

Yes you can cancel the Westpac visa and keep the amex

  • Noob question, but do you have to make the spend 90 days from approval/receipt of the card/s, or from activation, to get the points? And if it's activation, how long do you have to activate them? Thanks

    • +1

      From approval

  • 2 nd statement, bonus points are in, so not long until they arrive in Qantas and then I can cancel :)

    • Second Visa statement arrived yesterday, points appeared today…..

    • You dont want to cancel now to miss shop small Amex right?

      • I cancelled the westpac straight away (able to do it online), I ll wait next week for the Amex as it's when the balance is due. I am not keeping as I have 2 other Amex for the shop mall anyway :)

  • Has anyone smart enough to take a screenshot of this offer?
Westpac is not honouring this claiming they have never had this offer in July and I am only getting 60K points for visa instead of 75K and also $50 fee for qantas reward!

    • I need to check I might have done it. I already had the points and cancelled the Westpac about to cancel the amex.

      • how many points did you receive? 60K or 75K?

        • 75k westpac + 15k amex

    • Any luck as i only got 60,000 too

  • 4th statement and still nothing, I have escalated this issue and hope to hear back soon.. anyone in same boat?
Met $3k spending after 2nd statement and have been waiting ever since.
First statement QFF didn't come thru and only came thru along with 2nd statement QFF earnings once I called them as they supposedly didn't have my QFF number, which is a lie (I've had other QFF cards with them before and also provided QFF number during application)…

    • In exactly the same position but from the earlier Finder deal. Still waiting on the bonus points from Westpac. Met the $3000 spend on June 26th. Normal points finally got credited to QFF on 3rd statement after they told me to wait for the 2nd statement then they found that my QFF number wan't linked to the CC even though it appears on my statement.
Never had this much issue with getting bonus points. Will be calling them tomorrow.

      • mine's also from the finder deal, had exact same situation re not linking the QFF number… still waiting on call back from westpac. They did confirm I had met the $3k spend.. so let's see what they say.

        • Same for me, and same issue with QFF number. I was told I met the spend and my points would come in November, but I met the spend in like August. Maybe they do a quarterly batch process of bonus points and we just missed it? I hate waiting and not even knowing if the points are actually coming :(

          • @meowmeowmeow: Finally got a response back, they said that I had another card (Rewards Black) card still open on their system. I closed this card like 2 years ago. They put me through to the 'Customer Experience' team, who confirmed with me and their Rewards team that indeed that card has been closed, and that I only currently have the platinum card. THAT'S THE REASON FOR THE HOLD UP OF POINTS. They are writing to the admin of Rewards team and will respond back with progress… spent 1 hr on the phone for this process, hopefully hear back early next week, will update this post. What a pain!

            • @iversonjack: @iversonjack oh that's not a good sign. I have an earth black card but it wasn't listed as an exclusion for bonus points in the terms and conditions. Hopefully they don't pull the same joke on me. My husband got his 75k points and he had an earth platinum until a couple of months ago,so I maintain hope. I got my 15k points from Amex already.
Let me know how you go. I might need to end up following the same escalation process :(
