I just wanted to leave this comment on here for the community members who are feeding their dogs on Hill's Science Direct: Don't. We got advised by our vet to feed our senior dog a special diet of Hill's Senior and it was really only until I started doing my own research that there's alot of filler that doesn't make it a nutritious meal when you compare it to other products.

I can only assume that the vet we saw was pushing this product because they were paid to do so, when I compared the ingredients to Ivory, it was clear in terms of its macronutrients that Ivory was a better product for the health of our pet.

Based on previous community feedback, we've switched over to Ivory Coat, and will advise in the future how that's going.

    • Yeah, we got our Puppy from RSPCA and they suggested Science Diet (as that was what he was being fed as I think they have a deal with Hill's). Never really agreed with his system, so we switched to Ivory Coat on other recommendations and he's had no real issues since.

      • in general foods owned by multinational companies tend to be filled with rubbish

Hill's Science diet owned by Colgate Palmolive
Royal Canin owned by Mars is another example

    • Ivory coat, Meals for mutts, Canidae, Taste of the wild
these are a few good brands
this list is not exhaustive :)

      • anyone has any thoughts on 4legs?

      • XP3020 and Absolute Holistic and Ziwi Peak is what I feed my dogs

    What sort of ivory?

  • Research would also show that dogs ate a raw diet and when one man gave a dog some biscuits left over from a trip at sea he came up with the idea of feeding dogs biscuits as a meal. Then go onto the great depression it was cheap to make as people coudnt afford to feed dogs meat like they used to and leftovers. We are marketed into beleiving that dogs need biscuits and can food to eat because its a billion dollar industry. Vets are brainwashed into selling overpriced dog food .. why … because people are to lazy to research and find out. The more you read the more you discover. I now feed raw for my labradore and she has never been better, Skin allergies gone and so much more energy…. that said i agree ivory would seem a better choice and a good deal if this is what you prefer to feed. As mentioned stay away from fillers etc. You woudnt eat KFC for every meal so why do people continue to feed dogs bi products I dont know.

    • we use the Ivory Coat dry food as a side for my dog and she always gets something raw on top of them. I find that works best for her and us.

    • the convenience factor

also if my diet is predominantly vegetarian
I cannot bring myself to shop for meat
so this is a convenient compromise

but do agree that natural foods are better

Also vet is probably equal to GP
GP is not a dietitian, and neither is a vet

People feed their dogs products with fillers because the multinational companies have the money to advertise
eg Pedigree is one of the worst dog foods, but also one of the most popular
Any dog fair will have lots of advertising by Pedigree
Hill's has the word Science so it must be good
Royal Canin- the kibble is shaped differently for my lab- so it must be good

Go to the Pet food shop, obviously the multinational company has the money to give better returns to the shop owner, and therefore will get a better shelf presence

While the poor independent food is on the bottom shelf, third row

how many ads do we see for dental floss vs ads for toothbrushes with space age bristles
      same difference

    • so much more energy

Gah, my Dog's got enough bloody energy on Ivory Coat kibbles, can't imagine him on raw food then :-o

    • Care to share any of your research? Cursory google searches show nothing wrong with dry food?
Every comment here saying big brands are bad but giving zero evidence to back this up, makes them seem like tinfoil hatters without actually giving any evidence to prove what they're saying.

      • +1

Cursory google searches wont get us far

for your viewing pleasure I have highlighted ingredients that contain rubbish and fillers
in this case all of them cost almost the same

may I ask for any evidence to suggest big brands are good :)

        • I'm not claiming big brands are good, I just wanted some actual proof as to why I shouldnt feed my cat one food or another besides some guy on ozbargain telling me so.
Will buy the ivory coat for my kitten now though, thanks!

        • @ntwigz:

my 2c is just have a look at the ingredients
if it is from a big brand company it will usually (not always be rubbish)

  • Always best to look around. I generally find nettopet.com.au the best price for Ivory Coat (though it doesn't seem they have Lamb and Sardine) . e.g. Turkey and Duck is $87.52 delivered.

    • argh forgot to add always shop around for a better deal, will do it now :)
