      • Oh God no - unless you want a vehicle careering into you.

Plenty of other torches better adapted for that, with zoom that is important in a cycling context. Single 18650 job. There are plenty of adaptors around for those to attach it to the bike.

        • any you can suggest, helmet mount so not too heavy, but bright enough to spot illuminate? (and not exposure level pricing)

        • +1

@inamberclad: maybe the BLF A6? Or TG06S (see comments further down).

If you don't want to be worried about cost from theft/damage - pretty much any Cree Q5.

      • You will blind road users, don't do this.

    • +1

I would call BS about this having complicated interface. I gifted mine to my 64 year dad and he loves it and learnt how to operate it within few minutes. And he can't even figure out how to send text messages on his dumb phone. This has the easiest UI of all enthusiast flashlights.

      • I would call BS on your BS.

Anything that needs its own set of instructions falls into the category of 'complex' even if you and i can work it all out on our own.

        • All you need to know is how to press a button. Press it once for ON. Press and hold to ramp up the brightness. One press to OFF.

If you think this is too complex wait until you try armytek, zebralight UI's

        • +1

          @oxymoron:

Sure at a certain setting it's quite easy, but transitioning between each of those if you wanted to is not so easy. When you mentioned your 64yo Dad you didn't make clear you meant within a certain configuration. Bit misleading that wasn't it?

        • @AngryChicken:

Why would anyone want to use configuration mode? Unless you are a flashlight nerd, I dont see a point. It works so much simpler out of the box. Its like buying an Android phone. You don't have to root and install a custom rom to use it.

        • @oxymoron:

I'm happy for you to stand in the middle of the road turning this on and off in order to mimic an SOS.

  • +1

Those looking for batteries, these or these are the ideal cells. There are no doubt cheaper places to buy them from, but supersports600 is my go to.

    • Those Sammys are flat tops, looks like this needs buttons

      • Ah crap. Can't edit my post. I bought the 30Q button tops from here but now can't find them on his store. There is an 8 pack of re-wrapped 30Q's (Imalent) for $70 which is pretty good for local stock on a $ per cell basis.

  • This price is far too good for me to pass up this time, thanks OP!

Time to stock up on 18650s.

        "Conclusion:
capacity is way lower then any normal cell and it cannot deliver much current. I wonder if the missing vent holes are because the internal cell protection (PTC & CID) is missing?

This is what I call a bad cell."

        hmmm

        • +4

It is because of that. They have literally no protection at all. Good way to burn your house down.

        • +2

@potplanty: isn't it funny. I would normally point & geer at people saying electrical things are dangeous & might burn your house down (Xiaomi powerboards, chinese plugs, wiring your own powerplugs, etc) But Li-ion batteries really are dangerous little beasts. It needs the protection because if there is an internal fault & it starts self discharging, they really do catch fire & often explode. The protection is like the fusebox in your house. it's one thing you don't want to skimp on.

also cheap chargers can also damage these protection circuits and you won't know until they start over heating and often catch fire.

Here's an article from Battery University (sounds questionable, but is a really great source of information for all things battery related)
          http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/archive/lithium_ion_safet…

        • +1

@supabrudda: I've had a button cell explode right in front of my face before and that thing was tiny. Never want to see an 18650 explode. May actually be lethal, shrapnel wise.

    • +2

When it sounds too good to be true….

    • +4

I wouldn't even bring those pieces of shit into my house. They're a fire waiting to happen. I know this because I gave away all my Ultrafires years ago and my mate told me one caught fire the first charge. Not to mention every single report on the internet saying how shit they are.

    • +2

Best tip i can give you about 18650 batteries, never ever buy anything with 'Fire' in it. Not a joke, or pun intended, but yes these are known to have bad cells.

  • Man 5000 lumens. That would be like holding a car headlight in your hands

    • Sure is! It's half the Lumens of my slimline LED Bar. Crazy bright!

      • What do you use your LED bar for?

        • Floodlights the road ahead. Great for preventing roadkill.

  • I have one, these are really only useful for a short period of time. It'll overheat after a few minutes at maximum lumen.

    • That seems pretty common for 'Turbo' mode in torches like this.

  • +1

Thanks OP - bought one but not sure how often I can use it…plus the pain with charging/ buying special batteries separately.

Almost sold out though (+90% claimed) so get in quick if you're still contemplating whether you actually need this :)

    • +1

Also bought one and not sure if I will even use it, not to mention the extra $$ for battery/charger. Price and power seems pretty good though.

  • All gone now

  • +3

I just noticed on the Today's Deals page that these 2 torches will be on sale at 4pm -

    • The second deal is for torch, battery, plus charger.

Note it is a 14500 battery (same size as AA but Lithium technology so 3.7V).

The torch on its own is $24 or so.

      • As mentioned above, it will be on sale at 4pm.

    • do I need to use the code ? thanks.

    • +1

Sale prices are $17.36 and $23.24 respectively.

      • I posted it as a deal here.

        • +1

Thanks :) posted prices here for anyone lost in the comments like me, sometimes.

  • +2

Cool, another bright torch I'll never use. I guess it can live in the car boot as an emergency torch.

    • +1

      Cheapest =/= best

    • +6

No they're not. Stop posting these pieces of shit. Everyone has already stated Ultrafires are absolute crap.

    • +1

I'd be amazed if those batteries are even 1/4 the stated capacity. The highest capacity legit 18650 is 3500mah, these are just more likely to burn your house down.

    • +5

First you spam us with your requests for good batteries, and now you're spamming us as a self-declared expert on good batteries.

If you need to ask any questions about batteries, then you probably don't know what you're doing, in which case always buy protected cells.

      • -6

I ask for help and not get it. Thanks for that. I try myself and I get kicked. Thanks for that. Great forum but can’t say the same about its members

        • +3

SteveAndBelle sent you a link with one of the best batteries you could probably get for the torch but you flat out ignored that suggestion because it wasn't some cheap chinese shit. Grow up. By all means buy the "best batteries" you have posted, no ones stopping you.

        • +1

I agree, the fact that some members need their hands held so much that can't find batteries for themselves is a little ridiculous

  • Website saying 100% claimed

  • +3

For peeps not necessarily familiar with the world of LED torches, this is not an everyday torch, more something that you'd take out if you wanted to spotlight a mountain or blind a deer.
It's not great just for casual night walks (too heavy) and in the higher modes will quickly destroy your nightvision.
A better option for everyday use would be the BLF A6 which is amazing or the convoy S2.
    An amazing product though.

    • +1

spotlight a mountain or blind a deer.

Not necessary, you can use it during black out and just point it to the ceiling it can light up the whole room.

    • +2

+1 for the BLF A6. I carry it with me everywhere, I fly weekly and have no problems bringing it in hand luggage (inculding international flights)

  • Damn I paid $59 for it on Amazon 2 months ago and that was with $20 new account discount.

  • All gone? Spewing…

    • -2

      I wouldn't lose too much sleep - there's a few pro's and con's about this torch.

It's the outcome of an initial development cycle so they haven't quite finessed it yet. It appears to be too hot on turbo and has a complicated interface.

On the positive it seems to have harnessed the power of a small star.

      • +2

Most high-power LED torches have heat issues, even the $300+ Nitecore Tiny Monsters turn themselves down after 5 minutes on turbo mode.

      • Those are cons the same a car's cons are driving is hard and the engine makes noise/makes exhaust. The heat is a by-product of the chemistry of the cells and the interface would take 10 minutes to learn.

        • Yes they're cons too but cons that are less relevant to a torch.

          I know the interface instinctively.

That comment was a month ago - get with the times bro.

        • +1

@AngryChicken: yeh bit o thread necromansy lol. Got carried away reading as I was linked to this deal just before.

Got the Ultrafire batteries with charger from ebay. Will work nicely with Thorfire. Thanks for help!

    • +8

Gotta love illiterate kids who spend their days "trolling" Ozbargain

EDIT: …. and editing posts apparently

    • Will work nicely with Thorfire.

Thank you so much - i appreciate you sharing your expertise.

    • Don't come crying when your house burns down. Or when you lose an eye from an exploding cell.

  • +2

NCR18650GA are the best batteries for these. Had this torch since it came out. Buy from these guys

    https://www.techaroundyou.com/Vape-Batteries-Australia-Melbo…

  • Apparently you can pull apart the rechargeable power tool batteries aldi sells and it has 4 18650s inside.

    • Won't be button tops. Nor protected.

    • +2

Yep, the 2Ah ALDI packs have five and the 4Ah ALDI packs have ten genuine Samsung 2000mAh Unprotected Flat-Tops.

I pulled a pack apart recently… unscrew the four screws then use sharp side-cutters and/or pliers to pull the straps off each cell

The 4Ah pack on sale is $40 so yeah a pretty good way to get good quality cells for $4ea which is still pretty good even though they're only 2000s. Flat-Tops though so no good for the Q8. Fine for many other torches though!

      • I'd prefer to pay the extra money though for 3400mAh ones though. 70% more capacity in the same size can't be beaten.

        • +1

Yep, each to their own. Splitting packs is a great way of getting cheap, quality, bulk cells which is what I needed as I plan to give them away with torches & chargers as gifts anyway :) I personally run protected Panas for all my own gear.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Can't beat those glorious NCR18650B's.

        • -1

          @potplanty:
          Yes you can, Samsung 30Q

You sir are a very mean salty grumpy terrible cocky person. These kind of people should not be allowed here.

        • +1

@Salian: As someone who went from spamming people asking what batteries to buy to claiming Ultrafires are the best ever your opinion officially means (profanity) all. I'm not mean, you're just stupid and ignorant.

While we're at it too, they're completely different cells for completely different applications. Samsung is 3000mAh whereas Panasonic is 3400mAh. Samsung has CDC of 15A while the Panasonic has a CDC of 4.875A. The Samsung is unprotected while the Panasonic is protected. One's mainly for vaping and other ridiculously high current draw applications and one's for torches and general use. Again, you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

  • Is this made of Uru or Vibranium?

  • Does the discount code still work? It did not work for me!

  • ERROR: The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase.

  • Can someone explain to me why Ozbargainers have a strange predilection towards torches? What are you guys doing out in the dark so often that your phone torch won't cut it?

    • +3

You can recharge them at work then use them at home instead of your house lights to save money.

    • +2

Just add it to the list of things that appear on here that sound cool and cheap, but ultimately end up never being used.

    • +1

I think you underestimate the amount of time we spend living in caves to save on rent.

    • +3

Handy to have a few good flashlights, never know when you might need them. These Chinese ones are so much better than the junk sold at Bunnings etc, even better than 3D Maglite. The beam is pretty incredible, and they seem to be well made overall with a pretty solid feel. Not sure how much use I will get out of this big one, but for the price it was hard to pass up. Good for blackouts and I like how it can be mounted on a tripod for camping etc.

    • +1

I go camping often and need lights for that. I also go into places underground that have absolutely zero light in them and need torches to see.

    • I can't resist torches with my initials imprinted =)

    • they probably needed this more in the thai cave rescue than the sub…

    • They really are awesome modern tech. LEDs and L'ion batteries with a micro controller, pretty much the best of all modern tech pushed far.
Get a few and have a play, they are great fun I can assure you!

  • Not working :( "The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase"

    • It's not valid any more, I think it was only for a certain amount of purchases

  • is there a good bicycle mount for this?

    • Other comments suggest this isn't suitable/safe for road use.
