    Oh well, time to mod.

      Were Wii asleep?

      • 😂🤣

        • For those that missed out… why don't you just download the Wii on to your* phone??

          *S8 or better.

        • @Kangal: how?

          @ozzyoi: dolphin

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-ATgCAVgLw&t=90s

Works mostly on QSD 845 chip phones, but I'm pretty certain it will work on low-end phones rocking QSD 636 as well.
Just need the software to improve further and further.

Case in point; Nintendo Wii is much more powerful/faster than the PS2, but the PS2 is still not emulating properly on Android/Windows because its more complicated (less mature).

  • +9

A modded wii with eBay component cables still holds up quite well I think. Great value.

I bought one from endgames once and it already had homebrew channel installed!

    • +12

      Add in a side-of-the-road CRT!

      • +1

You're not wrong. The Wii is one of the last consoles that can output 240p video over component cables, which means on a CRT you can run NES / SNES etc games at their original resolution.

      • Not many on the sides of the road anymore. People are starting to twig that they're actually worth some money these days.

        • That and rain is not too good for electronics.. circuits breaking and all.

        • Can you explain why CRTs are worth money these days ? Just curious if you mean in terms of component value (scrap recycling) or because there's a resurgent demand for CRTs ?

We have long since gotten rid of all the CRTs we user to have so I'm just curious why thee's any inherent value still left in these..

        • @jason andrade:

Retro games look like complete shit on modern HD TVs, they look much better on CRTs so there's a demand from that market.

        • @airal3rt:

          Framemeister.

    • +1

Even better, modded wiiu and vwii with a standard hdmi.

    • why not get the wii2hdmi instead? Who wants to deal with component these days.

      • +2

Somebody who has no spare hdmi ports on their tv. Nothing wrong with component (not to be confused with composite)

        • +1

Wii2HDMI and other off-brand ones are inferior to component anyway.

      • I legit bought a Wii U over a Wii just because of the hdmi!

      • People who want to use CRT , 4:3 screens and don't want digital latency.

More common then you might think due to Softmodding and Retro Gaming on these devices.

      • would a wii2hdmi look better than a component cable on a HDTV?

        • +1

I've got a couple of softmodded wiis, wii2hdmi and component cables. Component looks a little better than the cheap wii2hdmis IMO but they're not bad at all. The audio from them seems to be a little overdriven but not a deal breaker.

If you have component input free I'd say use that, if not a wii2hdmi is a decent and cheap option.

  • +3

Is there any reason to get this if I have a modded Wii U?

    • +4

You can play GameCube Games natively. This assumes you get the original Wii not the 'Family' edition.

      • +2

        Wiiu can as well.

        • +1

          not natively, but yeah.

        • @EnterTheShiftKey: It's native in terms of 'not emulated'. There won't be emulator-related glitches or anything like that.

But you're right that it can't play gamecube games, check out this video where me and my friend tried it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVafUrKxlnU

        • +1

Technically you can't play the discs. But you can load the GC isos off a USD HDD. Compatibility is basically 100% with Nintendont. It plays under the vWii, as it's the Wii hardware that plays the games. The advantage of doing it on the WiiU is you get HDMI port. You will need the USB to GC controller adaptor, or you will need to use a USB controller or a WiiU gamepad (they are all compatible with Nintendont).

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n1es3twCv8

        • @AustriaBargain: does it run the gameboy player? ;)
What about the microphone in Mario party 7?

        • @AustriaBargain: If you use the Wii U virtual console Nintendont injection method then you can also use both the screen and controller of the Wii U gamepad.

@idonotknowwhy: No (although it will run a GB/GBC/GBA emulator) and No. As far as I am aware the Wii U also doesn't work with dance mat controllers (both Wii and Gamecube).

        • +1

Wii doesn't have the underside port for the gameboy player in any case. You can just use a GBA emulator in Wii or WiiU, but native hardware is miles better. So many games do not emulate perfectly, like the Mario and Luigi games. \

And that's a no to the microphone too. Some of the sing games do work with a USB mic, but apparently to reverse engineer the GC mic would be too much effort just for a few games.

Dance pads as well, you can't play properly with a GC controller because you can't press left and right at the same time on the Dpad, it rocks in the middle by design.

Other than those though, Nintedont will play everything just like the original hardware did. Most games work with the widescreen patch, proper widescreen with no stretching. Here's the compatibility list: https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Nintendont_Compatibility_List

    • +2

Only if you have Gamecube Memory Cards with data on them that you want to access.
Otherwise you can mod the vwii and do everything, including gamecube games (from your ISO backups of course)

  • +4

without even modding it, if you change the country to UK, you can download the netflix app and then put it back to Australia. cheap netflix on a spare tv

    • +23

      In 480p?!

      • +4

not even 480p, unless you buy the component cable.

the original in the box is just standard AV cables

        • +1

I'd go with a "Wii2HDMI" for about $5 to be honest. Soon new tvs won't have component input.

        • +4

@idonotknowwhy: My Sony 4K doesn't have component and that was a 2016 flagship model.

        • @BradH13: Even my 2011 Sony tv only supports composite/component via a dongle (that I'm pretty sure I've lost since then) anyway, can't imagine it survived much longer than that.

      • The one and only

    • I think the component cable will only output 480p, so that is gonna look shit.

      • -2

Nah they do 720i through component.

        • -1

          got proof?

        • +2

@pinkybrain: lol nope. I did own the official Nintendo component cables though and could swear there was a 720i or 1080i option in there (keep in mind this isn't 720p or 1080p, i = interlaced).

The best proof I can find online is that it did 576i and 576p. Maybe I've just gotten mixed up. Still, just buy a Chromecast if you want Netflix.

        • @stickyfingers: I don't remember the Wii ever having that option, although some promoted 'Enhanced Definition' EDTV with the 480p and 576p modes.

You really do need component cables to improve the image.

        • +1

The Wii never did 720p. The only cable that would do that is one blessed by a wizard. Or up scaling like the HDMI adaptors do.

        • @stickyfingers: nope, it was only 480p. You can run wii games at 4k with the dolphin emulator though

        • @stickyfingers: Definitely NO 720p/1080i option.

    • UK, you can download the netflix app

The app server is still running !?

    • This took me too long to learn! The Wii Netflix client is pretty good too!

  • Is this the whole console plus the nunchuck and remote for $28?

    • +1

Yep bundle, according to the picture

      • -1

        No game like Wii Sports?

        • +8

You think people buying this will actually need games on disk? No, no.

        • @PainToad: Honestly, it's not as easy to find wii games as you'd expect. I got one a few years ago and there weren't as many decent games available as I thought there would be.

        • @macrocephalic:

All I can say is you mustn't have tried very hard.

      • I was in store about 2 weeks ago when someone bought one, and they gave them wii sports for free as well

      • I though it was just the console and controller, no nunchuck included… Happy to be proven wrong tomorrow morning :)

  • I was just looking at this on Twitter.

  • Is this only in store or online as well?

Do you still get wii cartridges in store? I mean, not obsolete yet.

Sorry, not up to date with these.

    • +3

Will be both online and in store tomorrow. As for wii games, you can still buy them, however they don't make brand new games (excluding just dance)

    • Wii plays disks

      • disks

        I remember those

      • OF course you'll probably be playing games from a flash drive on the usb port.

  • +10

    $28 dollars for landfill

  • +3

haha i remember getting this for $25 from EB, inflation!

    • +25

I remember paying $300 for this 10 years ago.

      • +2

Pretty sure we got our original one for $198

        • Maybe @wtfnodeal got them before they came out… The shady way

        • +2

@paras123cool: Well that $199 deal was 4 years after release. Posted 2010 and the machine came out 2006.

        • @paras123cool: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii
Released price $399.99 sold out almost everywhere. I had to call a few jb hifi stores with my friend to secure one.

        • +2

@wtfnodeal: Weren't allowed to use the phone by yourself?

        • @KLoNe: sorry missed out "and ran around" with my friend

I had a twilight princess bundle preordered at EB Chadstone and went to the midnight launch but didn't win the life sized Link statue 😣

        • +1

          sad reacts :(

      • +1

My launch day Wii is still going. Suppppperrrr Mariooooo Galllaaaaaaxxxyyyyy!!!!!

Those game are much bettter than the open world garbage that is Odyssey. Yeah, I said it.

        • +1

Every 3D Mario Platformer is excellent. Mario 3D World is my favourite (co-op is awesome).

        • @FireRunner: 3D World is amazing in every way. Also has the best Mario boss fight ever.

        • @FireRunner: my wife and I was from the time when mario is always 2D. We found 3D mario is super hard :/

        • Those game are much bettter than the open world garbage that is Odyssey.

Finally someone that didn't buy into the hype.

For me the galaxy series were the highlight of the mario games, odyssey felt rushed and massively overrated.

          I'd give it a 5/10

      • +2

Now that negative gearing is winding up prices are falling.
