Should You Sandwich HDD & SSD Together in Dell Optiplex 9010?

I know you can get 2.5" caddy for optical slot but i want to retain the dvd drive,

so the only space avail for SSD is sandwich it together in original HDD caddy , OR on top of PSU.

Which one is hotter or better option ? sandwich on HDD or PSU ?

Thanks.

  • Do you have a spare 2.5" had. Swap the current one with that - will give you more room. And then add the sad to that.

Otherwise, jam it against the hdd

There's usually space below the hdd or dvd drive in Dell systems, even in SFF models. That's where I've put SSDs in at least three Dells that I can remember off hand.

I've done this with my optilex, just placed it on top of the HDD. Doesn't draw much power, doesn't heat up - all g!

Yep chuck the SSD in there under the HDD if it can fit. As long as you aren't moving the system around all over the place it should be fine.

    • thanks, just worry about heat from hdd

      • SSD should be fine, they aren't affected by heat as much as a mechanical hard drive would be.

  • The SSD in my 9010 is just floating. I think was between the back of the drives and the ram.

    No issues so far.

    • wow, didn't know there are space left between ram and hdd caddy after it clicks in

but it's gonna be toasty with cpu in the region

  • My OptiPlex 9010 came without an optical unit. So I put the ssd there.
For optical stuff i used a USB DVD.

  • I've absolutely sandwiched my shucked HDD above the SSD. I tossed the Dell blue plastic bracket, given the HDD was too thick, but have had zero issues, it was nice and tight with them together.

I'd avoid the PSU as they can get hotter, and avoid floating as you don't want too much airflow restriction or things potentially banging around, but otherwise you'll have zero issues.

    • thanks, i've sandwich it inside hdd caddy .. hope it wont be too toasty there

      • It'll be absolutely fine there, good choice. Now to enjoy the blazing speed of an SSD for everything!

If you have any issues just use Velcro. SSDs are so light is perfect.

  • Use a magnet to stick it against the other HDD or the metal enclosure. :)

    • lol
Jokes aside, mechanical hard drives are aluminium anyway. You would have to buy an aluminium magnet. ;)
