Lighter socket device in Australia

Hi guys

I’ve recently acquired a dash cam and have since realised that it continuously records, even when parked overnight. I fear it’s going to leave me with a flat batt someday.

I looked up and tried to find a way to change my always on socket to accessories only mode. However it seems like it involves cutting wires - something I’m not comfortable with (yet). Is there anyone who can help with this?

Alternatively, there is a device that looks like it would sort me out but haven’t found anything like this in eBay au. Worse yet, I don’t even know what to call it.

Any recommendation for this scenario? Thanks!

Ps.: my car is a 2010 a3.

  • I got a hard wire kit for my dashcam which monitors the voltage and turns off the camera if it drops too low.

    • HOw can this device used? when the car is no one , there is no power to the lighter socket or this device can by pass this?

      • It's in the item description "For use in vehicles with a permanent 'always on' Lighter / AUX socket, the unit simply plugs between the Dash Cam and the lighter socket and when movement or vibration is detected will turn on the connected device."

        • i do recall if any car I drive (most of them are Japanese) has 'always on; AUX socket

        • @LoveBargain15:

          sorry i should say I don'r recall

    • That’s what I’d like, but shipping so expensive!

  • you hsould use this —> https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-Dash-Cam-Hardwire-Fuse-Cable…

no wire cutting, but you will need a multi meter to check which fuse will be live all the time. plenty of youtube show you how to do it.

  • Silly question, have you actually checked to see if your lighter socket (or DC power socket if you will) is constantly on? This hasn't been the case with any of my cars.

Ah, rereading your question, it seems as though, yes, you've ascertained that power is constantly drawn, apologies, my bad.

  • You could try a backup battery for the dashcam? Like NEO
The camera runs off the battery unit for 24 to 48 hours before it would affect your car battery.

If you are parking for an extended time, you just pull the plug when you park. The dashcam then runs off the backup battery unit until it runs out.

    • $350?? Haha, my dashcam is 1/5 the price…

The example was probably the top of the range.

Similar cheaper options are a Power Magic Pro for $55
or Lukas Lk-350 for about the same.

Both allow you to set a cut-off voltage and/or a timer

I had this problem in my Mondeo - always on 12v outlets and no spare fuses I could find with my limited knowledge. I ended up plugging the camera's USB cable into the back of the stereo. Admittedly I cannot turn the stereo off when driving but that's a small price to pay for no fuss operation and battery usage (plus I can't see the cabling any more).
