I read this as (b) you need to 'join and pay in august', not join… and pay in august.
Very ambiguous. My money is on you either pay the July $29 trial offer, or pay the $59 w/ free GHM august deal.

        • +2

          @damop:

I read this as (b) you need to 'join and pay in august'

That is almost impossible as you get a 30 day trial and cannot pay before the free trial ends.

        • @jv:

Not really. You could have already had the trial, then cancelled last month.

This wording confirms that if you sign up again you are still eligible. But of course you don't get the trial again.

        • +1

          @jv:
If you did the trial previously and didn't pay at the conclusion, you are no longer a member. If you join again now, you will not get a trial and would have to pay straight away but would get the mini, so this might encourage people who let their membership lapse to join again

        • They have altered(failed to follow their own) T and C's in their favour before. That is they only enforce the rules that hurt the consumer.

    • +3

It won't be the first time eBay staff have got it wrong on a chat, I'd take this with a grain of salt…….. however, as you've got a copy of that as evidence you should be covered.

      • +2

You just need a copy of the T&C's that state that all you need to do is pay in August, or join and pay immediately after the free trial…

    • +1

Did you confirm if you will only be charged $29?

    • +1

The issue here is you need to mention the people who trialed eBay plus from July, and will be automatically renewed for $29 annual for the first year in August, would those people get the google mini or the ones paying $49 full amount in August only as new members

    • I clarified with Octavia via chat and she said the following:

      Octavia8:33 AM
The only eligible ones are those who start the free trial on August 1 and those who join eBay Plus and pay the annual Plus membership fee in August 2018.
      strapifyau8:33 AM
If I cancel my trial and pay under the new pricing, will I be able to get this?
      Octavia8:34 AM
Yes, you can do that. :)

TLDR: if you signed up on the July trial, you aren't eligible. But you can cancel your subscription, sign up and pay the full price and then you will be eligible.

      • So basically: weigh up whether you believe the GHM is worth $20, if yes -> cancel and sign up at $49 price. If no, continue with $29 renewal.

        • $29 renewal.

Only for the first year, right?

        • @superforever: I meant renewal in the sense that you're currently on the free trial so get the $29 first year deal.

        • @unco:

Since $29 is only for the first year renewal, cancel it and sign up again with $49 renewal means $20 for GHM not bad if you want it.

        • would like to know too

        • +1

          @superforever: That's literally what I said though..

  • I'm hoping there's someone who has paid already who can clarify if we get asked what colour we want.
I'm currently assuming they just send out a chalk coloured one.

    • +9

if we get asked what colour we want.

      It's the free colour…

    • Web chat says there's no specific colours yet but will be sent at random if there's different colours.

  • +1

Boo, joined ebay plus too early..

    • +9

Or you could look at it as saving $20 and a bit of privacy.

      • Imagine if someone knew I asked what the temperature is, or the date, or time, or what time an alarm was set, or that I set the office light to 5%.

        • +2

Imagine if the device had to listen to every word that was said and analyse them just to figure out if it heard 'ok google'

        • @sssx: Yep it could be a worry in the future. Especially if a totalitarian type government had access. That type of power is losing sway here at least. Though it is still a few years away, people behaving complacently could let them hold on longer.

  • +5

    damn paid yesterday.

  • +1

So just to clarify if I have signed up to the free trial and subsequent annual fee of $29, will I still get the free google home mini if I pay the $29 in August? Also, do I need to fill in any additional form?

    • I'm in the same boat, eBay plus expires on the 25th for me, so hoping that for the $29 I get the mini.

    • +1

In the same boat, my free trial ($29 deal), renews on 4th August. If I get a free Google Home Mini, that's a killer deal.

      • +2

Hmm keep us posted. Yours renews a lot earlier than mine, so I guess those that are later in the month will know for sure. I'm happy to pay the $29 for the year with the mini, but will probably cancel without it.

    • No you aren't. See my above post. You need to cancel and pay the full price to be eligible.

  • +4

Okay, so there seems to be a lot of confusion about how the free 30-day trial affects the offer.

If you sign up for the trial during August, and then pay when the trial ends, even if that ends up being September, you are still eligible for the Google Home Mini.

If you have previously used your 30-day trial, and then you cancelled, and sign up now in August, you are still eligible.

If you are currently in a 30-day trial that you started prior to August, and will be paying for the year in August, the wording is a little unclear about this particular situation, but I'd wager that you are eligible.

8.1 The terms in this section 8 apply if you: (a) sign up for a free 30-day trial of eBay Plus in August 2018 and then pay the annual Plus membership fee on the day following the conclusion of the free trial period, or (b) join eBay Plus and pay the annual Plus membership fee in August 2018 (“Giveaway Qualifying Conditions”). If you satisfy these Giveaway Qualifying Conditions, you will receive a Google Home Mini, a smart speaker with the Google Assistant built in, unless you advise eBay Customer Service on the day you sign up that you do not want the Google Home Mini

    • Sounds like the case, but you end up paying $49 (August deal) instead of $29 (July deal)

    • +3

The wording is a little loose. If you look at (b), it says “join eBay Plus and pay the annual Plus membership fee in August”. This could mean join eBay Plus (whenever) and pay in August OR join eBay Plus and pay for it, both in August.

I think the intention of this clause is for those who are ineligible under (a) for the free trial, so if they dont get the trial and simple pay the $49 when they sign up in August, they can still get the Google mini. That’s my reading of it anyway.

Those that have the eBay chat transcripts that say they are eligible, hold onto them.

    • +1

If you are currently in a 30-day trial that you started prior to August, and will be paying for the year in August, the wording is a little unclear about this particular situation

No it's not, that is part (b)

  • -1

    What can this thingy do?

    • +1

Just say "OK Google, what can you do?" and she'll tell you :)

      • +1

Mrs forced me to use a male voice, she didn't want another virtual woman in the house.
Nobody talks to Hey Google; Alexa is still #1.

        • wait, it can change voice? good to know!

  • +4

And piss those off that paid days ago

    • -2

How so? Their trial will end a few days before August ends and can sign up then.

      • +2

If you paid a few days ago likely it means your trial ended a few days ago. This is what happened to me - free trial to get the cheap google home minis a while back. Trial period ended so was billed $29 about 5 days ago.

        • Oops. Sorry, not trial; membership. The membership will end a few days before the end of August and when they renew then they get the Mini.

  • +2

I think you can no longer pay 29$ from today, I think you had to sign-up and pay by July 31st. The trial doesn't count as signing up?

    • +6

Yeah everyone seems to have missed this point. The incentive to pay your annual membership fee in July was the discounted $29 price. Now in August you pay the full price of $49 and get the free GHM. Those who are expecting to pay only $29 and get a free GHM are going to be disappointed.

      • Thats what i thought. thanks for confirming.

If it was still $29, i'd have been pissed.

        • +1

It's not really confirmed.. Seems like 50/50 based on eBay's replies so far.

        • @Soluble: This is what eBay CS emailed me after an extensive conversation on chat, and then them going away to carefully examine T&C's:

To make it clear, this promotion is for members who join eBay Plus between 1-31 August 2018.

I started my free trial in June, and paid for my membership a week ago, so in July. They referred to my date of joining as being in June, so if 'joining' means from the start of the trial, and the information they've sent me above is accurate, I don't see how anyone can pay $29 and get the GHM - one deal is for July, the other for August - you won't be able to qualify for both.

Then again…this is eBay, and they have a history of mucking up their promos, so anyone is able to swing a GHM and pay only $29 membership…good on 'em!

      • Pretty sure everyone wants to be paying $29 discounted annual membership and get a GHM with it, else its not a good deal for $49

My one is not expiring til Aug 12th, which means if they do include any user paying eBay plus I don't mind having GHB to top it off.

After all eBay made so much money from us, even casual sellers, time to give back!

        • Whether $49 constitutes a good deal or not depends very much on the individual. Over a year I'll easily cover that in savings, so the $29 I paid is fantastic.

  • I guess we have to create a new account and sign up for trial plus pay $49 on 31/8 if you have signed up free trial previously and cancelled.

  • +4

My free trial ended and paid for the year on the 23/07. Already gotten my money's worth in free shipping but I wouldn't have minded a home mini.

  • +2

Paid $29 for my annual ebay plus yesterday. I am so pissed off not getting the google home mini.

The Google Home Mini will be shipped to the primary Australian address specified in your eBay account within 7 days of eBay receiving your membership fee in accordance with section 8.1. If you do not have an Australian primary address specified, you will not be eligible to participate in this giveaway and receive a Google Home Mini.
For the avoidance of doubt, if you cancel your eBay Plus membership during the 30-day trial period, you will not be eligible to participate in this giveaway and receive a Google Home Mini.
This giveaway offer cannot be transferred or exchanged for money or credit. eBay reserves the right to discontinue offering the Google Home Minis without prior notice.
If you receive a defective Google Home Mini through no fault of your own, please contact eBay Customer Service and eBay will arrange for the device to be repaired or replaced if it is defective.
Google Home Mini requires a Wi-Fi network, a nearby electrical socket and a compatible device. You will also need a Google account to operate the Google Home Mini. Google Home Mini is the trademark of Google LLC.

    • Clearly reads those who are paying $29 will not get it. Only $49 will as a member signed up in Aug, that's it

      • You mean it doesn’t clearly say that? See condition b)

  • such confusing T's and C's… my trial doesnt elapse for a couple of weeks so hopefully theres some definitive yep/nope by then ;)

  • How much is a brand new unused Google Home Mini worth generally? I mean if we just get this deal and sell the mini can we at least get $49 annual fee back?

    • +1

I am quite sure you can ask google that question.

    • +3

I paid $32 for mine new. So 2nd hand ~$20.

    • You'd be lucky to sell them quick at around $40 mark, above that pretty hard. With the current promo expected to see its price going down a bit.

  • +5

ebay support says it will not apply to july subscribers on trial. and if we cancel and resubscribe, it will not apply either since the promo specifically targets NEW subscribers.

    oh well

    • +2

Make a new account or create one for the wife if she doesn't have one?

  • +5

Ebay chat just told me that I will still get the google home mini even though I signed up for free trial in July, as I will pay the annual fee in August. However, she cannot confirm if I will pay $29.

    • +4

      yeap

that is the main issue most people are confused about.

    • +2

Competing answers from eBay support - I reckon they are winging it

    • The terms now state $49. Knowing eBay you will have the choice of $29 or $49. eBay will be flooded with unloved Google Home Minis now.

  • +2

Does anyone have a copy of the Ts and Cs from the July $29 promo?

    • +3

I'm on the $29 promo and on chat, they confirmed that when I pay my $29 later this month, I qualify for the free Google Home mini and that it will be shipped within 7 days of payment.

      • I hope you're right, but eBay have told me different.

  • +2

It seems for simplicity, better to just sign up with a new ebay account. Its for buying anyways.

  • +2

    Just signed up!
Didn't ask what colour, and didnt ask what delivery address to use either.
When do we get the free Google Home Mini?

    • Yeah how we do claim the google mini?

    • +1

Should be shipped 7 days after they receive payment. Apparently they don't have a plan for any email or notification for eligiblity for promotion or shipping of the Google home.

    • When do we get the free Google Home Mini?

      within 7 days of payment

  • +2

wow they're on their knees for Ebay Plus signups already? Well that went pretty quickly.

    • +1

eBay management must be running the Uber model. Run at a loss. I have not paid eBay a single fee for selling my items since February 2018.

eBay is becoming the next Myspace.

      • They're making bank from all the business sellers that don't qualify for FVF promos. I'm certain they are paying extra eBay fees to be part of special % off promos and Plus, gives them a marketing advantage and higher search rankings.

The harsh reality is eBay no longer primarily a private seller marketplace as it was decades ago. I reckon the FVF promos are their attempts to claw back that market they've lost because of the ridiculous fees these days.

  • Damn, just got direct debit of the annual fee from my paypal account yesterday.

  • I can't see myself using it for anything meaningful.

    • Excellent work! Thanks for confirming that.

      • +1

Don't rely too much on it. I don't think the person understands the question. and just go with paying in August for eBay plus without checking when the trial was started. T&C clearly says only applies to people who signed up in August and pay the annual fee.

        • +1

SUSUP's question looks quite clear to me. If Octavia has misunderstood, that is her own fault.

  • I got a free one from a woolies promotion and still haven't unboxed it. Not sure why I need one.

    • I really just use it to listen to MMM radio in the shower. With a second one I might use it to listed to the radio in the kitchen I guess. I'm not a very good user of this device though.

      • +1

audio quality from a single speaker isn't going to be very good though. I'd rather use a Logitech UE.

    • No single use plastic bags but give customers a stupid product that does not interest them. Welcome to the modern impractical times.

Term 4.7 is an absolute crock of sh*t. Similar terms PayPal use for PayPalHere. They can cancel your membership/account at their discretion and without warning. No reason either, they can just do it and goodluck finding a back up…means you can sign up for this, pay, get a google mini then if ebay think you are doing "too many free deliveries" or returns they can at their "discretion" cancel your membership…and not evenrefund you?! Nah uh. Cannot up this deal wh en they maintain such power over members. What a joke.

    • -2

This has nothing to do with the deal

      • +2

It's a term OF the deal. You are supposed to READ them before signing up. So yeah, it is.

        • It makes sense that they would want a clause like that to guard against people who might order a lot of free delivery items and then free return them, only keeping the odd item. Like browsing the shop at home. I doubt many would do that sort of thing but this clause would help eBay control it.

        • @jdr:

I'd like to know the % of people from Ebay that are doing this first? You would imagine they are dealing mostly with large sellers who protect themselves with items once they are shipped to ensure the buyer isn't being dodgy? So what's their 'excessive' limit? 3 a month? 8? 15?!

I remember a few years ago I purchased 8 or 9 items from overseas in the span of a month…I waited 7 or 8 weeks and all but 3 items arrived in the mail (and never did for that matter) so my only course of action was to try and work out a solution with the respective sellers. Sometimes their communication is very poor, misunderstood or just completely non-existent. In these instances, I was forced to raise Paypal claims, to which I eventually received my money back - and they were small amounts too (generally under $10-20 each transaction) However, upon receiving the 3rd case response where "Paypal decided in my favour" they thought it was a good time to state in a separate email "You have reached you award/claim limit"…. !?

Frankly disgusted they had to email me about this; as I'm not sure how I am to be held responsible when a seller takes my money and either doesn't ship, or ships something without any form of traceable protection; I'm not the postal service who loses the items, so accountability lays elsewhere, yet they feel the need to blame me? Because Paypal was effectively an Ebay company before branching off in recent years; They can pull their finger out at any point and say "Thanks for your $50 contribution for the annual membership, but you've sent back too many items in the past 5 months and you're abusing the process, so we're revoking your membership". How is that in any way fair?

Too many idiot people down-voting a legitimate concern to this deal tells me they either have no concept of ebay's autocratic T&Cs or how they treat some legitimate online buyers who use their web services.

    • -2

Sounds like those telcos that offer so called unlimited but then if you take too much advantage of their offer they cut you off or slow you down. Great to know that our pollies are more concerned about Tampon Tax than terms that are unfair to the consumer.

      • If you don't like the terms then don't sign up - it's as simple as that.

  • +1

I found this mini thing every useful playing songs when i taking a shower. I could just say "next song" or "volume up".

    • get the newer one with a screen
and you can watch your favourite videos

      • +12

get the newer one with a screen

Or wait for the next one with Camera to show others when you shower! :D

        • +1

the newer one with screen comes with a camera, so no need to wait.

they do have a physical privacy camera shutter though..
