You have to weigh up the pros and cons..

If you use a mobile phone and use their service e.g. google search, you would also be giving them lots of data
If you use microsoft OS and cortana or bing then you give MS your data.
If you have facebook account, you are getting tracked in lots of sites you visited.

At the end of the day, it is hard to avoid any company not getting any data of you unless you give up all technology.

Your friend talking about fiji holiday wouldn't have triggered to google home to know about it.
Only way was the friend asked google home about fiji holiday or did some google search about fiji holiday..

Without the google trigger words, it is not suppose to be listening
and no one so far has proven that it is recording without that trigger word.
There was a bug where it was recording all the time, but they have fixed it now.

This does not mean that there is no secret NSA or exploit though..just none found yet.

I think in the future most home will have 1 or more AI assistant in every home cos it is just really useful.
If you want to get in on the action, then now is the time to get one.
If you like the ironman movie, then this is like having your own Jarvis.

Here's some of the best commands so far..
There's other newer features being implemented all the time that are making it even better
          e.g. routines, schedules.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb_8nb3bNLc

If you want one to test, then this ebay deal is pretty good.
If you don't like it then pack it up and never use it again.
At least you still got the ebay plus membership.

The mini's are Transformers waiting to strike once SkyNet goes online.

      • Wouldn't that be Decepticon?

        • Technically speaking both Autobots & Decepticons are the same race (Transformers).

        • @grab_ur_freebies: i would finally watch both movie if they actually do that!

Have received the following email from Ebay:

This is a follow up email on our conversation over chat earlier.

I checked with our management if the $29 promotion still applies to your eBay Plus subscription and found that this is the case. You're still going be charged $29 since you signed up before 31 July, 2018.

Don't worry, as mentioned, you are still eligible for the Google home Mini giveaway.

Please let us know if you need more help. Thanks for choosing eBay and have a good day!

    Kind regards,

Don't worry, as mentioned, you are still eligible for the Google home Mini giveaway.

I just hope for everyone's sake that its not just for your individual case. If not, there are going to be alot of disgruntled ppl.

    • I was on the chats moments ago and was sadly informed that people who joined in July are NOT eligible

      • +1

        Maybe they are being selective.

I have an email of chat confirming that I'm eligible.

    • +1

Good to hear, thanks for confirming it.

  • Signed up for free trial last month, will pay $29 in August. Just got told that I will not be eligible for the Google Home Mini promotion (support person Aldwin).

    • Yep. Just got of of a chat. Got told the same thing.

      • Surely would they not let you cancel the trial and buy at $49, to get the GHM that way? Hmm; lose / lose situation for eBay and you if so.

Ps. Read Arnold Schwarzenegger's email a few lines above.

  • Great I already paid it should be a google mini to who took the ebayplus early FFS I should cancel just because of this BS

  • Hmm, so is it worth spending $20 to get a GHM…

  • How dare they offer a better deal than the one I paid for. Punishing early adopters, that's the spirit!

  • Is google home even good? I have Alexa and the device is super good. can hear me from 3 rooms away.

    • google home mini has much better audio quality…

look at the comparisons on youtube reviews.

  • Just got off a chat with ebay and because I signed up for the free on the 30th of july I won't be getting one

So I'll be canceling my trial a week before it end's

At least I got double flyby points when I bought my breville coffee maker

  • Also asked in the chat, I was told that if I want a Google mini I will have to cancel my trial and pay the full $49 in August.

Since I've been holding out on a good price for one anyway that's what I'll be doing.

    • Who told you this?

  • +2

I honestly think $29 eBay plus membership is better than paying $49 with Google home mini which takes your data invade your privacy which also isn't gonna worth much once so many people have it.

So the answer is don't bother with this $49 deal and optionally think if $29 is worth plus

    • +7

but now I can say 'OK google, order me more tin foil hats'

      its a win win

  • Yay for two accounts - a lesson learnt to others.

    • Just two? How adorable !

  • Just signed up today and bought something.

So they count on the date you sign up or the date you paid for one year?

    • What is 'eligable'?

    • +2

      No, you're not legible

    • Stop! It's illegal!

  • +1

Should just reward us who actually did and free trial and paid up late July for the year

    • +8

You were rewarded, weren't you…you paid $20 less than anyone who joins up from August onwards.

      • +3

People who joined trial in July and pay $20 less this month still get rewarded again.

        • I'll believe that when the GHMs actually arrive.

  • +1

As per all the comments here, I am getting mixed messages as well (signed up early July and Plus expires in 4 days)…

Hi xxx, I've checked on it and it seems that you're still on trial. If you want to avail the google mini promo then you will need to unsubscribe this one first. This will somehow forfeit the introductory charge of $29 but after you opted in again (Paying the exact amount of $49), you will then be eligible for the promo.

  • Having just bought a Home mini and discovering how useless it can be I am seriously baulking at this offer.

    • Constantly disconnects from Wifi (sits 2M from my router)
    • Always saying "Sorry I can't help with that yet"
    • Can't add songs to Spotify queue
    • Can’t set reminders “Sorry, create reminder is not yet supported.”.
    • Can’t give directions for public transport
    • "Sorry. Something went wrong. Please try again in a few seconds"

The list goes on. Very frustrating. Can't believe I actually catch myself getting mad with it.
but probably because this is all stuff that Google Now does on my phone right now.

To paraphrase an article I read
"I need Google Home to do stuff for me — set appointments in my calendar, warn me that my train is going to be late so I should leave earlier, tell me about that concert I might’ve forgotten about. I need it to do stuff that Google Now already does successfully — at bare minimum."

I'm hoping Google has planned to release several and frequent updates to improve Home's functionality and features, otherwise it's just a glorified kitchen timer.

    • +1

I just stick it in the bathroom and the only instructions I tell it are things like:
"Hey Google, Play Triple M Radio"
"Hey Google, Play Triple M Melbourne News"
"Hey Google, Turn off in 10 minutes"

      • +2

Cool. That's fine if that's all you need. Go for it.
But I think an AI assistant should be able to do a bit more than just start and stop the radio. :p

        • +1

I have the standard Google home and find it got more useless as it was updated. A light turns on, I ask it what the light is for, it tells me I have a reminder, I ask it what the reminder is, tells me I don't have one. It seems to have lost some other functions as well, questions I ask originally it can't answer anymore. I ask it who the most valuable company in the world is, it tells me the 3rd most valuable company in the world. I ask it to play songs from Google Play and it's 50/50 if I get the right song.

        • +1

But I think an AI assistant should be able to do a bit more

          It does !!!

In addition to the above, I also use mine for:

"Hey Google, What is the time"
"Hey Google, What is the temperature"

        • @Soluble: I've got a Google Home in my living room that I only use for two things - "Ok Google, good morning" to hear the weather and news, and "Ok Google, set a timer for 20 minutes" when I'm cooking. It's frustrating that when I ask "Ok Google, how long left?" during a timer, it says it doesn't know how to help, I have to specifically say "Ok Google, how long left on my timer". It's something small, but surely a "smart" speaker should at least be able to understand simple context.

I have a mini in my bedroom that never gets used.

I can controls lights, aircon and my TV, but that rarely happens unless it's to quickly change the colour of my Hue or Nanoleaf lights.

    Hello ___,

Good day! I hope you are doing well.

This is about the chat conversation that we had yesterday about your eligibility for the Google Home Mini. I would like to apologise for the wrong information that I have provided to you and I would like to explain further.

The members that are eligible for the Google Home Mini promotion are the ones that have started a free trial on the first of August of within the month of August. This is to be fair to them since after their free trial ends, they will be paying for AU $49 for the annual subscription fee. Whereas eBay Plus members like you that have started the free trial on the month of July has paid or will only pay AU $29 a year and enjoy all the perks of being a member.

I understand that you may feel bad about this but you don't have to worry because we have a lot of promotions in store for all our members to enjoy.

I do hope that you would understand our side. But if you have questions, please let us know.

Thanks for choosing eBay. Take care!

    Best,

    Louise M.
    eBay Plus Ambassador

    • Exact same message. Will be cancelling ebay plus before it renews.

    • +1

They sent you an email? This just about clears up any confusion. My subscription fee doesn't happen for another week or so - likely they will have sent the same to me by then :(

      • +1

        Yep, that was via email.

    • I'm cancelling now. My trial ended yesterday and I kept it based on this deal entirely.

      • Wont it already have renewed?

        • Haven't seen it yet. But even if it did, I'd still argue my case.

        • +2

          @zecoj:

I would argue that you should receive the mini (as long as the email was sent after your renewal). They gave you the wrong info and you kept your subscription based on that so you should be entitled to it or at the very least a refund.

    • +2

Give them a warning lots of "professionals" will cancel their eBay plus if the July trial members not getting Google Home Mini for paying $29.

  • +1

$29 and $49 sounds too much for eBay Plus still

Still waiting on eBay to refund my renewal fee as the cancel membership button wasnt working

    • +1

Yes can't see much value in $29 or worse $49.

      • For you perhaps…plenty of value in it for me at either price.

        • -2

          Where?

        • @dm01: So no answer to where the value is, just a neg? Shows that there isnt any value

        • +2

          @asa79: It wasn't my neg - here, I'll prove it by adding a second…

        • +1

@asa79: …and to answer your rudely phrased query, the value for me is in the money I save on shipping - the savings over a year will easily cover the cost of plus membership several times over. And that's not to mention the double flybuys points.

Hope that's a satisfactory explanation - sorry my original answer left you grappling such complex ideas as features-and-benefits and value-for-money.

    • You too huh? I had a three week long dispute running with them about this. Eventually got the refund after proving the technical issue, but won’t get that time back.

      • I talked to them via online chat and after a little back and forth they agreed to refund me, tho still not seen it yet

        • +1

It took mine about 2 weeks. But now there’s a new development, they invoiced me again the $29 after the refund. I’m currently on online chat awaiting them to sort it out. Strangely it’s the ebay plus help chat.

    • +1

I have no doubt that there will come a point in time where eBay promotions will be available to eBay Plus members only.

If you are a heavy eBay user it pays for itself. I've probably gotten close to the $29 worth already in the first month with a couple of $10 postage costs now free.

      • Likewise. With the money I'll likely save over a year, I could buy a box of GHMs if I actually thought they'd be useful.

  • +2

Decided to keep my options open. Signed up for a new Ebay Plus Trial…and gives one a month to decide whether to continue and pay $49 and get the incl a Google Home mini. Is it really worth even $20 (to me) is a hard call. Am trying to convice myslf that it has a use. Will decide on 2nd Sept when trial expires and gives me chance to see if there is a juicy offer in Sept…..perhaps a free Rasp Pi 3 (woo hoo). I didnt bother renewing Jul deal……..

  • +1

I was going to buy a Google Home Mini for about $55 anyway, so this is perfect. A cheaper Home Mini and year of eBay Plus for free essentially (regardless of how useful it is, which I think is not very much).

    • +1

(regardless of how useful it is, which I think is not very much).

      Same

      • +2

Yeah but paying even $1 for something that is useless (and unused) is $1 wasted (in my mind). Have so many "useless" purchased as "a bargain" things it gives me thought. Don;t want more in the 'Useless Bargain Drawer" :-)

        • +2

It’s not wasted if the person was going to buy one anyway. You don’t need to buy it if you don’t want it. But this person does want it. To each their own.

        • +3

          @Nitrous:

It’s not wasted if the person was going to buy one anyway.

          Or want eBay Plus

        • +2

@Nitrous. Its funny I was going edit my comment after submitting with "Unless one wants one in which case this is an excellent deal".
I got sidetracked and I totally agree with you. Was more reflecting on myself with the comment.

        • +1

@Borg: No worries Borg. I get your point too though, another Xiaomi backpack? Do I REALLY need it? Maybe.

Haha, but I was actually looking to get a GHM too, so this deal works for me as well. Oh, I should upvote.

  • +3

Going off earlier comments on pg 1, t&c for 8.1 (b) seems to have change.

    1. Google mini giveaway
The terms in this section 8 apply if you: (a) sign up for a free 30-day trial of eBay Plus in August 2018 and then pay the annual Plus membership fee on the day following the conclusion of the free trial period, or (b) have completed a free 30-day trial (and ceased receiving all eBay Plus benefits) and then rejoin eBay Plus in August 2018 and pay the annual Plus membership fee in August 2018 (“Giveaway Qualifying Conditions”). If you satisfy these Giveaway Qualifying Conditions, you will receive a Google Home Mini, a smart speaker with the Google Assistant built in, unless you advise eBay Customer Service on the day you sign up that you do not want the Google Home Mini.

Why do they not simply hire better lawyers to write their stuff out?

    • +2

Cause they don't realise what they're up against!

      • +1

        They were up against "professionals"

    • +1

on pg 1, t&c for 8.1 (b) seems to have change.

I have a screen capture of what I read in the T&C's at the time a Rep confirmed to I was eligible after joining in July.

      • +1

Unfortunately for you jv, the rep made a mistake and eBay have since clarified the details of the promotion, confirming what most of us had suspected.

And despite your expert use of selected emboldening to insist otherwise, screen grabs and chat transcripts will do you no good in this instance as you're yet to actually hand over any money for your annual membership, and once you do it will be the actual T&Cs rather than the misRep's interpretation that will be binding.

But I suspect that is already apparent to you.

        • +2

the rep made a mistake and eBay

I have an official message from ebay emailed to me confirming that I qualify.

They have not sent me any follow up email confirming they made a mistake, so their original statement holds.

        • +1

and once you do it will be the actual T&Cs

I have a screenshot of the actual T&Cs.

        • +1

          @jv: > I have a screenshot of the actual T&Cs.

You have a screenshot of the previous version of the August promotion T&Cs, which don't apply to you as you joined through the July promo with it's own set of T&Cs, and it is those which will apply should you allow your trial period to roll into an annual membership with a (discounted) $29 payment.

Regardless, you're making an illogical argument in using that screenshot as evidence of qualifying for the free GHM:

Either T&Cs are fixed at the time of publication, which seems to be what you're claiming by holding eBay to your screen-captured version of the (now-altered) August promo T&Cs. If so, then by the same logic, you can only be subject to the T&Cs that were current when you joined up for your free trial in July, namely that you can choose to pay $29 at the conclusion of the trial for a one year membership with eBay Plus - no mention of a free GHM.

Or T&Cs are able to be altered, which seems to be what you're claiming by holding eBay to their new August promo T&Cs, which are different to the T&Cs you agreed to when you joined in July. But if this is your stance that eBay can update T&Cs as they want, then the latest version of the August T&Cs are now valid, which are worded to specifically exclude members who joined in July with the $29 promo from receiving the GHM.

So either the terms & conditions are fixed and you're excluded because you signed up when July promo T&Cs were displayed, and so have agreed to be bound to those, or they are variable and you're excluded because they've been changed again since you made your screen capture and are what will apply if you decide to pay the $29.

The erroneous email message from eBay will be of little help as the T&Cs it refers to have now been updated to specifically exclude your scenario, and as those are now what will apply (assuming you still include yourself in the "variable T&Cs" camp described above) should you allow your payment to go through mid-August, you would have no basis in trying to claim a GHM.

The other way you might try to look at it is that the T&Cs that apply are either those current when you joined for you free trial (those from mid-July, in which case you'll pay $29 but not receive a GHM) or those current when you make payment for your annual fee (which barring any further amendments are those currently displayed would mean you'll pay $49 and receive a GHM). You can't claim both!

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, jv, but it is important to manage expectations realistically.

        • +2

          @dm01:

You have a screenshot of the previous version of the August promotion T&Cs, which don't apply to you as you joined through the July promo

          The don't state that…

I called and spoke to ebay, and they agreed with me and I have it in writing.

        • @jv:

          The don't state that…

Section 8.1 of the T&Cs explicitly states you must have joined in August to qualify for the GHM giveaway (or rejoined having had a previous membership finish), so yes, they do state that.

Further, if you'd read section 9.3 you'd find that

          • …all amended terms will automatically be effective after they are posted. If you do not accept the changes you should cancel your eBay Plus membership in accordance with clause 2.

Insist all you like to the contrary, cite calls and chats if you want, but it's all right there and without ambiguity. eBay have confirmed as much directly to me, emailed others to correct wrongly given information, so to believe anything else is to be in denial.

        • +1

          @dm01:

Section 8.1 of the T&Cs explicitly states you must have joined in August to qualify for the GHM giveaway

OR have joined before August and pay in August.

I saved a copy of it.

If they stuffed up, that's their problem. They agreed in writing that my account qualifies. They checked my account as I was on Chat. I have the whole transcript.

        • +1

          @dm01:

eBay have confirmed as much directly to me,

          confirmed to me too…

I've had my legal team go through all the details.

        • @jv:

I saved a copy of it.

Oh dear, your copy of it no longer applies - see section 9.3 to know why.

        • @jv:

I've had my legal team go through all the details.

Gosh, I hope you've retained them on one of those no win, no fee deals 😬

          @dm01:

Oh dear, your copy of it no longer applies - see section 9.3 to know why.

Oh dear, they haven't complied with their own T&C's

"We will also notify you of any material amendments through eBay Messages (in My eBay) or directly to the email address linked to your account."

        • @jv: Would you like me to contribute half of the $49 in that case?

        • +1

          @dm01:

I'll talk to my legal team and get back to you.

        • @jv:

"We will also notify you of any material amendments through eBay Messages (in My eBay) or directly to the email address linked to your account."

As you're yet to pay them any money and confirm your annual membership, they're not obliged to notify you of anything.

        • +2

          @dm01:

they're not obliged to notify you of anything.

Then they are required to keep their promise since I haven't been told otherwise.

I specifically said to ebay that wasn't planning on renewing, thus wanted confirmation that I was eligible.

Therefore if they don't send it, they would be required to refund my subscription…

        • @jv:

Then they are required to keep their promise since I haven't been told otherwise.

It might be helpful if you think of the T&Cs as a collection of promises that you're required to read and understand before entering into an agreement. While an eBay misRep may very well have given you their interpretation of one point from the previous T&Cs at that time, another point in them says they can be varied, which they were, and in a way which renders the misRep's earlier interpretation no longer relevant.

Unfortunately a screen capture doesn't 'lock-in' those T&Cs for eternity…especially when you're yet to even accept to those T&Cs by paying them your money.

          Is that any clearer now?
