    • This one has Gorilla Glass, A2 lite does not.

  • +4

I've been on Xiaomi phones for a while now. Each generation gets better and better too. They always feel like quality for the price.

  • +1

wait for price drops of mi max 3

  • +1

This is going to be my first xiaomi phone. What will I need to do once the phone arrives? Flash it? Or will I be fine using it immediately?

    • +10

Take out and play, nothing to do unless you want a custom rom. I find MIUI (that comes preloaded) fine, the swipe gestures are really intuitive and work really well.

      • Does it come with Google Play Store? Obivously I need to install Banking Apps as minimum

        • +3

Yep has play store and google apps preinstalled

      • Even if you don't like MIUI, you can replace the launcher with something closer to stock Android (eg., the popular Nova Launcher). But the phone's settings, notification bar and the like will still be MIUI

    • +3

If you've flashed phones before, I can't imagine you won't want to this time, regardless of how good or bad the stock OS is. I thought the stock OS on my ZTE was actually really good but I didn't trust it.

    • +3

If you never had an Xiaomi product before, you need to make a Mi account. You need this to get permission to unlock the bootloader. Takes about 15 days for that process alone(gruesome process, i know, but it's worth it). Then you'll be able to flash anything into it.

Also MIUI is not that bad. It just tries too hard to be an ios clone. Although it does have some pretty neat features. You won't like it much long term but might as well give it a try for the first 15-20 days until you can unlock the bootloader.

    • +1

      @Iwilltakeit
      Install Nova or Microsoft Launcher
as MIUI does not come with app drawer

  • +1

natun-king_au on eBay has the Taiwanese model which has Band 28

  • +1

The lack of NFC was a deal breaker for me. Still a fantastic deal if you don't need NFC or Band 28.

    • what's NFC used for?

      • +13

        telling people about NFC mostly.

Some people use it as a replacement for tap&go credit cards and/or travel cards (if their system allows it). Most buy the stickers and use it for automation. i.e. entering house, hover phone over sticker to trigger automation

      • +2

        Near Field Communication.

People use it a lot for tap-and-pay (trust me, once you use it, you never go back, and you don't even need your wallet). As the other guy said, you can use it for anything that is NFC-related (DIY using it as a key to unlock your house, probably in the future if PTV puts out NFC myki pass you can just tap and go, but that'll never happen).

        • PTV is already trialing tap and go for myki on android.

      • +2

Google Pay mostly. I went from a LG G4 (NFC capable) to the Redmi Note 5 and missed NFC almost instantly. Went and got the Sharp Aquos S2 and now have everything in a $200 phone.

      • i don't hear about it anymore but there was a kickstarter (maybe more) for a nondescript, NFC ring.
You would wear it and auto unlock your phone when you pick it up. Sounds more legit than finger print scanning.
And you know eventually Google and Apple will hand over every ones fingerprints

  • This is the Chinese version. I just bought the global version 2 days ago for $194 USD shipped.

Should I cancel and get this? I was under the impression that the Chinese version is missing certain bands and also has an unofficial rom.

    • +1

Pretty sure the difference is just the default rom installed. happy to be corrected though.

They've only released the phone in india and china so far afaik.

      • same hardware, different software between domestic and global phones.

if it’s domestic reflashed to global it might say china telkom on the phone.

        • Same hardware except for slightly different cameras, the chinese model actually has slightly better cameras with a wider aperture and dual pixel PDAF.

    • Nope. Just the MIUI version is different (Chinese vs Global).

Although if you get this you'll still be able to flash the Global ROM into it. If you can get the full refund do it and get this one.

  • +2

I'm trying to find it on XDA, it looks like this is the Redmi Note 5 PRO.

The Redmi Note 5 has the s625 chipset and the cameras in the center of phone?

  • +1

Does anybody have any idea about the delivery times? As I need it before 31st August

    • +1

says Estimated Delivery Time:16-24days, no way you'll get it by that date

      • +2

Thanks. What is the point of DHL then?

    • +1

I've ordered maybe 6-7 Redmi phones from various Aliexpress sellers, always with DHL

Quickest arrived in just under 3 days, most took 4-5 days

My last order however (from seller Goldway not Mi Global Store) of 2 Redmi Note 5's took 2 weeks. There seemed to be a stock issue a month or so ago.

Once DHL get their hands on it, it takes just under 2 days to arrive from China/Hong Kong to Melbourne. They've always been great.

  • Does it come with an australian charger?

    • +6

Typically they also supply a cheap looking AU plug travel adapter that looks like it would burn your house down.

      • i charge phone overnight in the ensuite ….if charger or phone ignites there isn’t much flammable on the basin counter top.

also i get a good night night sleep.

    • They usually send an adaptor that fits onto the front of the charger.

      • +4

hate these adapters for chargers, they droop under the weight if its a wall mounted power point,

also some of these adapter are for china power points not AU, china uses longer blades and thinner blades compares to AU….look similar to the untrained.

easy way to tell is if the blades are 1/2 insulated for AU, no insulation means it’s chinese power point.

        • Oh wow I hadnt noticed. They did feel very cheap and generic, I just chucked it in my bag for Uni LOL. Wouldn't use it at home at all, afraid of cheap quality starting a fire.

But thank you for the info!

    • No, but usually comes with a convertible plug (and also it is a USB powered charger, so you can fit any kind of plug with a USB port into it.

  • +1

Is there anything around this price with a better camera? I've had the redmi note 2 and 3 (Kate), plus the redmi 3s, all which were rather unremarkable in the camera department. Unfortunately the Aquos s2 is out of stock at JD.

    • +1

This one seems to be a big step up in the camera department. Had the redmi note 4 and the camera was awful but they've improved it a lot this time around

      • +1

This is better in the camera department compared to the previous Redmi models.

Difference between Aquos S2 and this phone is that no NFC for this phone but does come with a headphone jack. Not sure about camera though.

EDIT: also forgot, huge development community too, so this phone will last at least 3 years (Redmi Note 4X will also probably go for another two years considering its development community in XDA, helpful people too).

  • +5

I've got this phone, it is great! HOWEVER

    • there is a 15 day wait to unlock
    • anti roll back is installed
    • Stock miui is garbage, always install another OS.

This is a great phone for the nerds who want to spend the time to hack it. I would not recommend this phone for a general user.

    • +1

It's curious, I prefer stock Android and I'm not all that enamoured with MIUI, but I'm always reading comments from people saying they prefer MIUI. Each to their own I guess.

      • +2

"Sometimes you have to change something that's perfectly good, just to make it your own" - Jack Donaghy

    • +2

I've been a nexus and oneplus owner in the past, and now a Mi Mix 2. I don't see what's the problem with MIUI besides notifications.

      • taking away the start menu
inability to remove shortcuts (just hide them in folders)
notifications for the mi products to buy

  • I got the 6gb/64gb version for $301 delivered from eBay last week.

  • +7

Great price I paid $290 inc DHL delivery for a black one 6 weeks ago.

I got the “Global version” but I think the only difference with this one is the absence of 2 bands that AU doesn’t have anyway

My observations of the phone with my previous phones being Samsung S4, Samsung S5, Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 4x:

    • Screen is amazing, really vibrant and deep colours. You really appreciate the extra vertical space with the on-screen home/back/switch buttons.

    • Battery for me lasts a full day no prob. Is about the same as RN4x, but not as good as RN3 which at first could nearly go 2 days.

    • I use Nova Launcher and just leave stock MIUI – close enough to pure Android for me

    • Camera is a massive improvement over RN3 and RN4x. Still a not as good as my old S5 in low light but in normal conditions I’ve been really impressed (but then again, refer to my comments about the screen)

    • One very minor but also massive annoyance is the notification LED. It’s white only, very dim and flashes very slowly. I’ve read comments saying you can barely even see it if you get a white faced one.

    • People will comment "..oh you’ve got an iPhone X…" when they seen the dual lens camera (me spend $1,500 + on a phone hahahaha….)

    • I just ordered the global version but am on the fence whether to cancel and get this Chinese version. I read that the global rom is unofficial and some people have had problems with the Chinese version, whereas the global version has an official rom.

  • +4

Check my account history. My order (xiaomi redmi 5 plus) from Aliexpress got stolen on the way to Australia. It's not this store. I chose the cheapest shipping option available. It's free, called aliexpress shipping or something like that.

    Luckily, it's been refunded.

Then I bought redmi 5 note from the same store of this deal since the DHL shipping is free. It arrived in 10 days.

The lesson is : use DHL if you want to deal with Aliexpress

    • +1

Most of the time Aliexpress free shipping is fine. I guess it was just bad luck.

  • cracked my lg g6 screen but its still going strong…
still this is so damn tempting..

    • +1

get the g6 fixed, you have band 28, nfc, oreo and will get pie.

get the screen off ebay and the phone shops will fit for typically $55 labour.

  • GST is added during checkout, making it USD 188.85 which is AUD258.12.

    • Sorry my bad, the price includes screen protector and cover.

  • Needs some deals on Mi A2 and Lite!

  • It comes up at $242.10 for me? Should I be setting the currency to USD?

  • +1

Thanks OP. Black is ordered @ $186.99.

    • Arrived today @ 14:00 with DHL Delivery.

This is not pure Global Version. Chinese Version with Global Rom on it. I have the original Global version and I don't see any difference so far.

Box is not plastic Sealed but it's understandable as they need to install global rom on the unit.

      • +1

Does that mean the bootloader has been unlocked?

        • +1

I think it is unlocked. I can see the Unlocked mark on booting up screen.

        • @ozizoy: Damn that sucks.. Means we'll never be able to lock bootloader or pass safetynet

  • My Review - Been using it for over 3 months now with stock and love it. So many options and features very fast front flash things to love.
Bought for $200 with 5 $50 catch of the day vouchers from safeway when they were on sale so price is not good.

  • Whats the screen glass like on this? A decent Gorilla Glass?

  • Should I get this phone or the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite?

    https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Global-Version-Xiao…

    • The only major practical differences are Mi A2 Lite has:

      • Android One
      • The notch in the screen (why? just becasue Apple did it)

For me the most offensive part of MIUI is the removal of the app drawer (Apple did it so it must be good) - install Nova Launcher and fixed.

I didnt realise the Mi A2 Lite version has 3.5mm headphone jack unlike the Mi A2

So unless you have to have the pure Android One expereince I'd get the RN5 since it has better processor, slightly bigger screen and since we're on OZB is AUS$60 cheaper.

      • a2 lite does fit roughly the same size screen into a smaller package though.

    • A2 lite has no Gorilla Glass, this one does.

  • Paid with a platinum debit carrd that has no international transaction fees. Still it has charged AU$ 276.
I picked the bundle with case but not the expensive flip cover. Just a simple case.
Before checking out it showed in USD Sub total 181. Shipping 0. Total 200.
I still ordeted and took a screen shot.
Still wonder how it added upto USD 200 from 181 + 0
    Any idea?

    • GST?

      • Yes. Gst applies.

    • gst? i think 10% maybe. I don't know. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Hey nith265, can you flash android pie onto this phone?

    • Well there seems to be some early ROMs available some I’m sure you could…

MIUI 9 is currently based on Oreo and Oreo has Project Treble baked in for faster core Android updates but maybe I read it only works for phones released with Oreo originally…? Don’t really know sorry.

I haven’t bothered flashing anything since my RN3 – kind of fun and liberating but I’m always scared I’ll stuff something up

  • +2

got this phone from another deal from gearvita, to use as a spare phone (gaming, videos, kids using youtube), and my thoughts:
    - sensational phone for the price.. nice big screen, love the position of the finger print scanner)
    - battery life is awesome
    - i know there are those that complain about the MIUI, but it does a good job mimicking iOS (so if thats what you are accustomed to, and/or have no idea about flashing/roms, its fine)
    - bundled with a free silicone case inside box (nice touch!)
    - for this price, just GET ONE !!!

  • What should I get if I want a phone to take good holiday snaps?

This, A2, Mi Mix 2, or Apple/Samsung flagship?

I was blown away by the quality if holiday snaps taken by my friend with his iPhone.

I've only ever had budget phones. I'm still using a Moto g from I think 4 years ago?

Also some stock apps lag, I'm assuming any of these would be more than enough?

  • Ordered 2 days ago but Aliexpress says still 17 days processing time to go. Is it so for everyone?

    • Yep, same for me. Gotta give it a few days I guess.

Edit: The processing time (17 days) is how long the store has to process the order before it is cancelled and you are refunded.

    • Mine says 30 days ! Hope I can get it within 2 wks …

    • That does seem a long time - when I ordered mine from Goldway it had 7 days processing time allowed

After 6 days and 23 hours they changed the status to dispatched….

They supplied a tracking number that didnt work/exist, it eventually did a work a couple days later so I assume it was like a prepaid satchel.

They claimed that the issue was on DHL's end. The reality I'm sure is they didnt have stock and were buying more time.

Order took a total of 2 weeks to arrive.

Was disappointed as every other Redmi phone I'd ordered off Aliexpress had arrived in 2-5 days. I'd make jokes that ordering from Hong Kong with DHL was quicker than me trying to find time to get to a bricks and mortar store.

    • Check again now. Just got an email notification that its been shipped.

      • No email for me, but I get an AusPost alert saying a parcel coming from Buylogic - Googled their web site and it has China phone number. So I assume it's the one. I thought they are using DHL?

        • No worries that's something else.

    • I ordered the black model at 10am Monday morning and still have "awaiting shipment".

    • Different Processor for that one :(.

      • Assuming the picture on eBay is correct it's the same phone/ same processor as this deal.

There are no processor variations in the Redmi Note 5 / Redmi Note 5 Pro

All that crap they've copy/pasted into the description doesnt inspire any confidence though. It's describing the "Redmi 5 plus" which just to make sure everyone is completely confused is also known in India as the "Redmi Note 5".

  • Dear friend
