How Do You Recycle CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs?

Hi OZB,

It's hard rubbish collection day in my street, and I have tons of discs from the old days. Is there a way to recycle these? I don't want to make a lamp or other crap like LH suggests, just want my space back. Any ideas?

  • CD/DVDs are made from polycarbonate (PC) and are category 7 (Other, a catch-all for those not in 1-6). In the past I used to give them to council e-waste recycling since they included CD/DVDs in their list. Council hasn't done a collection day of late here. I also could not find out if category 7 can be put in the container recycling bin. A search shows that PC is definitely recyclable, but I don't know who if anybody collects it at the household level. I'd be interested in what you find out.

    • Thanks for the e-waste tip, found this for the city of Melbourne, it says under "What will be accepted":
      * CDs, DVDs, videocassette and audio tapes
So I guess I'll check out Queensbridge Square in Nov :)

  • if you want to destroy the data, pop them in the microwave. 5 seconds

It's polycarbonate. It appears my council doesnt accept plastic labelled [7] but yours might. Otherwise hard waste

    • They mostly are old TV shows I 'acquired' back in the days, noting special ;)

      • so recycling/hardwaste

And possibly destroy yourself with the topic fumes.

      • So choose a less dangerous topic. :)

Or put it in a plastic bag.

Seems dumb to burn fossil fuels recycling plastic. And recycling seems to be a way of not doing anything while pretending your doing something.

The earth is facing a major catastrophe called climate change which is partially caused by burning fossil fuels.

There is no danger at all of running out of landfill space for plastic.

Someone was on here preaching how they no longer use Cling Wrap. Cling Wrap is a layer a few microns thick of almost no plastic at all and yet this person was holding this up as a fine example of doing their bit lel.

    • Well, it's not a big deal if you don't believe in recycling, but what about the awareness of it brings? I believe whatever gets people thinking and talking about the environment is good. And they eventually turn into actions one way or the other, and some actions will be more effective than others as the industry evolve like a pokemon.

I don't know how plastic is recycled or how effective it is at helping the plant by cutting out cling wrap from our lives, but maybe I will find out after having this very discussion here :)

Glue them to your ceiling. Put them in some string and hang them from trees.

My ceiling is reserved for this when I eventually get around to do it…

  • The council I live in has collection points at the libraries.

  • Just bin them
