Help Me Decide on a Phone (Pixel 2 Non-XL, Galaxy S9, iPhone 8, Pixel 3?)

Hi all, pretty much what it says in the title.

I want to get a phone before the end of the year so that rules out waiting on an S10. Pretty much looking for the best value out of the listed and longevity of the phone, as well as overall user experience.
Currently deciding between the Pixel 2/Pixel 3, iPhone 8, Galaxy S9

Pixel 2/3: Best camera, stock android, decent longevity? Pixel 2 will be cheaper upon Pixel 3's launch so might have to decide between the two in terms of value. I would love the excellent camera.

iPhone 8: Best longevity? My family all use iPhones and I have personally witnessed their iPhone 5S's lasting 5 years so far. I want to upgrade as infrequently as possible and hopefully get a phone to last 3+ years. I would prefer android over iOS but may change for reasons above.

Galaxy S9: Headphone jack + expandable storage. Best build quality? Questionable longevity?

If your family all use iPhones then get the 8 and enjoy iMessage and Facetime with them. It'll last 4-5 years with updates easily, iOS12 has been a major boost to old devices so expect longevity. Also Apple's stance on privacy is to be applauded and it's a great user experience.

I've used iPhones and Nexus/Pixel phones- and for me my Pixel 1 + "stock" Android is the best by far… but I agree with Hybroid! Although if you can wait until the end of the year, there might be some deals on the iPhone X?

Another thing on longevity - if it’s not holding charge that well at approx 20 months (before 24 months) take it into Apple for a diagnostic you’ll usually score a free same day battery replacement.

Even after the 2 year mark you get one battery replacement at a reduced cost of $39

Phone destroyed by wife or kids? They’ll replace with a Apple refurb (everything you see and touch is new) for $548.95

Yeah - as much as I dislike the Apple ecosystem because of it's lock-in effect, and as much as I'm a Pixel/Android fan - OP if your whole family uses iPhones and you contact them regularly, an iPhone might be the best bet (and I don't say this lightly).

That would also depend on what you're using currently and used to (any specific apps that you need might only be found on Android or iOS), and how much in/out of the Apple ecosystem you are.

Any reason the iPhone X (or XS/XR) are not in the running? Those would give you much better longevity.

For communication purposes, android would be similar to iPhone. We don't use imessage/facetime as SMS and calling accomplish the same thing.

Aside from iPhones we're pretty free from the apple ecosystems, windows PCs and whatnot.

I didn't include the newest iPhone Xs/Xr as they're pretty damn expensive and I feel like an android would provide better value.

        • Oh good, I don't have to recommend an Apple device. Yeah in that case, go Pixel 2/3 all the way, depending on price and budget as you said. The Pixel 2 XL is a perfectly fine device even on Android Pie, and I'm not really seeing much reason to upgrade to the 3 (and with the notch, possibly a reason not to).

All of those phones are excellent but if your family uses iMessage/Facetime then you'll want an iPhone. Despite being superseded, the A11 inside the iPhone 8 is an absolute beast. At time of release it had the most powerful CPU and GPU on the market. The CPU is still way ahead of what you'll get in the S9 and Pixel 2 and probably the Pixel 3 too. It'll last 4-5 years with updates easily.

Even the A9 is plenty powerful enough for most people. My SE is still as fast as it was when I bought it day 1, so the A11 would be more than enough.

I'd hang out for the Pixel 3 release in early October and then make your decision.

  • Whenever I pick up my friends iPhone 8 it’s feels like I’ve gone back in a time machine to 2012 when I had a iPhone 5. I can’t believe how ugly it is next to my S8.

    • I agree the bezels are quite unsightly in 2018 but I heard you just get used to it over time.

I was so excited to get my 128gb Iphone 6 when it came out. While I have to say that the response time and longevity is great, itunes just killed it for me, why pay $1k+ to be restricted from your own damn phone!
