Connecting a CTEK Charger

Stupid questions -

We have a 2015 Subaru Outback and I bought a CTEK Charger (Stop/Start) - after our battery died prematurely.

I've seen a couple of videos where the CTEK chargers are connected to the positive and negative of the car battery and videos where you ground one terminal and not the other.

The manual says - Postive and Negative on the battery.

1) Any tips for what people do?
2) Does anyone remove the car leads on the battery first, before connecting the charger? - (are you meant to?)

@blehgg My instructions say the following: If battery in car - Connect red clamp to positive. Black clamp to vehicle chassis. Connect charger to wall. Disconnect charger from wall socket before disconnecting from battery.

If battery have positively earthed batteries. Connect black clamp to battery negative. Connect red to chassis remote from fuel pipe and battery.

The charger has a safety so if it doesn't work one way try the other. The numbered light will light up to the battery strength.

You'll find that if your battery has died and gone very low it will only be a matter of time before you are stuck somewhere not being able to start. Make sure your RACV or road assist is up today for the next year. Hope this helps.

I use the wires with the 1 plug as its easier to connect up.

No need to take any connection off battery. You've probably already worked it out.

  • I just recently installed a Projecta IDC25 dc to dc charger in my car (are you talking about a battery charger for a dual battery system)?

If you go on the Projecta website and look at the installation instructions for this, they are quite detailed and are also applicable to other DC to DC chargers. You may need to tweak the instructions a little, but atleast this will give you better understanding.
