Moving OS from 120GB Internal SSD to 480GB External SSD

Hi Guys
I've recently bought a 450gb SSd drive and want to move my OS to it. The older SSD is a 8 year old drive and i'll probably keep it so i can save my games on it. I've downloaded Acronis True Image 2019 and now stuck as to what to do?
Can someone assist?

  • Desktop or laptop? Do you have the new SSD connected to the computer? E.g. SATA cable inside the desktop or a USB HDD Dock?

If so you will need to use the Clone option in Acronis. Instructions are available here and it's a very easy process. I recommend using the Automatic transfer option in Step 2.

    • Thanks!
Followed the instructions and booted to the SSD, it gave me a ''Windows has an error we will restart for you'' did that a few times. Went back to OS on old SSD until i figure what to do :(

      • Sounds like the clone failed. Were you using the OS while the clone was happening?

Perfect opportunity to do a fresh W10 install.
Super easy. A little bit more work but your pc will be happy and so will you.

    • Thanks but to do a fresh install i will need to purchase a new copy as the PC came with W10 already. Any way around that?

      • Yes. Log in or create a Microsoft account. When you install the fresh version log back into the account. There is an option to say you have modified your hardware and it will reactivate your original W10. Google for better detailed instructions. Very simple.

        Try this as a starter..

Even better it will probably just read the OEM key from the motherboard and activate automatically.

  • Did a sumsung 256 SSD to kingston 512 SSD.
kingston told me to use aomei disk manager that I found somewhere on the net.
I do remember having problems cloning but can't be sure if I ended up resizing the larger HDD partition to the same size installed then resized after windows did its thing.

As others have said you'd be better off doing a fresh install if you have the time.

  • I always use Acronis Disk Director
if the new SSD is a Samsung, use their migration program

  • Clonezilla is a fantastic free and oss option. Exceptional live CD environment to use if you like to use a GUI (like me!)

  • thanks everyine. None of the above seemed to work. I think I might need to take the tower to a local shop to get slugged.
