Short extension cords - 6inch?

I'm looking for short extension cords, something like 3 or 6 inch (to solve the problem of having big transformers that you can't plug in because they cover up the port(s) next to them as well.

What I mean is one of these: http://www.powercablewarehouse.com.au/extension-cords/extens… but very short.

Do they exist?

Wat about one of these? Not what you're describing but may suit http://m.ebay.com.au/Pages/ViewItem.aspx?aid=390213774833&sv… no extra cable. Otherwise just cut the cord to the length you want and reconnect/rewrap the wires

Not what I want. In fact that can sometimes make the problem even worse.

    Go to bunnings warehouse.

They have ones as short as 1 meter.

1 meter is too long. I want them short so they are still close to the wall/power board, but long enough to get that little bit of distance needed.

just cut one up yourself. buy the cheapest extension cord you can find, use a screw driver to open up the plug and take it off, cut off as much cord you don't want, and fix the plug back on.

its pretty easy but if you've never done it before, you can try
    http://electrical.about.com/od/diyprojectsmadeeasy/ss/replac…
    as a guide

the key is the remember which wires go into which metal thing in the plug so you match the earths and current things properly. (as you can tell, I don't know much about electronics or wiring, but I can still replace a plug so give it a try lol)

Rather just buy them pre-made if possible.

Don't want something to happen then the insurance company to say the cable wasn't correctly made and so they won't pay out.

fair enough (neg was a bit harsh but still)

if you want something really short, maybe just get a powerboard with a very short cord? i have never seen an extension cord that short before

Neg wasn't me. Thought it was when you said that but I clicked + to check and it wasn't D:

Errr… Why not just get a powerboard that suits wider spacings?

That is heaps easier, cheaper, neater and safer….

    Like this (has 2 super-wide) >> http://dicksmith.com.au/product/M7594/

    Or this (12-way) >> http://dicksmith.com.au/product/M6603/hpm-12-outlet-powerboa…

    • spend $30+ on a new powerboard rather than spending (what should be less) on short cables to use with my existing powerboard…

      Now you see? :P

And end up with an ugly, unreliable and kludged solution, when you can simply buy something off the shelf that does the job?

I linked to the DSE site because it was an easy way of showing you something that you obviously didn't know existed. You would pay about $10 for such a powerboard at a normal retailer… but I didn't realise you were so poor to afford that.

Hell, if you are hell-bent on saving money and don't care about compactness or appearance, why don't you just buy a heap of $2.50 4-way powerboards from Bunnings or your local $2 shop, and use every second socket?

So I am sorry for replying, I mistakenly thought you wanted a proper solution to your problem.

        Now you see? LOL

        • :D Right now I have enough space for everything) although my modem and router use up a full 4 port powerboard by themselves)

If I was buying new power boards, I'd just buy those octopus ones (if I could find a local retailer that sells them).

      • there have been quite a few 8-way wide-spaced surge boards for ~$20 on previous ozbargain deals.

get a power board with wider spacing. problem solved. cheapest solution. i don't think any manufacturer in their right mind would sell 6" extension cords.

  • You are not crazy, they do exist, but they are hard to find. You'll find they are closer to 12 inches long though (approx 8" of cable between plugs). Typically, short adaptors are found for use with uninterruptable power supplies, but they are IEC ("square" appliance shaped connector) to a socket, such as http://www.radioparts.com.au/ProdView.aspx?Product=27752105 or http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS4100. I bought some plug to socket types a few years ago from a place in Port Melbourne called the Importers Clearance Warehouse or similar (since shut down) but it was like the Reject Shop on steroids. I only bought a couple as a joke/curiosity for $1 each or so, and I regret it now because they are actually very useful. I know that's not much help to you but at least it verifies that they are real, and might give you a hint to find them elsewhere. I think they were called a Power Strip Extension. I'd post a photo of one but I can't seem to do so here. The markings moulded on the socket are Q02463 DOSS D06-Y 10A 250V~. DOSS is a brand normally carried by Radio Parts (link above) but they don't list it, they might be able to point you in the right direction though. The plug end is embossed YI-HUAN N17118 IH-402 10A 250V~. The pins are also have the black insulation along half of the pins as required by the current regulations.

Another suggestion is perhaps look at a universal travel adaptor, such as http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Universal-travel-AC-power-adapter-Plu…. They seem to take all sorts of plugs in its socket, and it is quite possible it will accept an Australian plug as well, even if that does sound strange. That should give you an inch or two clearance above your other plugs and allow you to plug in a wider device. Fairly cheap and compact too.

    • I found those when trying to find 6" cables, tempted to buy one for my computer to reduce the cable clutter slightly.

I also want to get the tools for crimping cat5 cables so I can reduce the clutter a bit more.

  • I was looking for one where I cannot fit my MacBook powerhead. This is the shortest I can find 30cms
