Work Recognition Gifts under $10

Hi all,

I was trying to introduce a monthly work recognition for a few other staff members(employee of the month). unfortunately, the budget only allows 10$/ person(please dont yell at me for the budget limitations, I have no say in it).

Looked up online, found some gifts like Parken pen from ebay for 8$ and mugs and all.

It is an health service work place. It would be great to see what ozbargainers have to say, after all we are all about getting more out of our money.

Thanks :)

    a free meal

    • Thanks. Great idea :)

    • too far mate. Around 1200kms ;)

  • I'm going to ignore the comparison to the value of your employer's 'employee of the month' award and the budget allowance. That could seriously backfire on them.

Given the small budget, I don't think it would be worth trying to personalise the award to some degree.

Perhaps have a look at some of the 'promotional product' sites and get a range of branded products within your budgetary constraints.

    • Yeah. No award might be better than a $10 award, all things considered. If it is $10, Card + giftcard would be my suggestion.

      • Cards themselves are usually $4 or more each, unless you go the cheap $1 ones.

        • Sure OP could finesse that from the stationery budget?

I imagine the most widely appreciated would be $10 Coles/Woolworths/Westfield gift card vouchers.

Not everyone wants a pen/mug/whatever so even if you can get a 'bargain' on a physical item so it seems like something worth more than $10, to someone who already has enough pens/mugs they will be worth $0, and they will literally chuck the 'reward' in the give to Vinnies pile.

Even if you don't normally shop at Supermarket X, you can still get $10 worth of stuff from there you need.

Or if you have a cafe in the building you work, perhaps see if they can do you a deal - e.g. give you 10% off their gift certificates, so you spend the money in-house

Yeah, if I've done work worthy of an award, I want cash (or equivalent/voucher, or time - maybe an early knock-off on a Friday).

More importantly, put my name on a register of candidates for promotion. I get free pens already, and if I'm winning tacky awards without getting a payrise, you'd better believe I'm spending my free time looking at job ads.

Yep, long lunch/half day/early knock off/day in lieu fo sho…but I guess that would depend on the workplace.

      • True. I agree 100%.

Seriously, with that sort of budget, just get some decent "employee of the month" certificates professionally made up. You'll get more thanks from staff out of something that a bit of effort has gone into, rather than "here's some POS promo thingy that the $10 budget would cover".

Actually, i received an award where certificate was created an hour before on a free website which printed out the certificate with the date as well . LOL. I felt terrible

  • As someone mentioned above, free meal. Or you could even save up for the next month and get a better meal.

    Don't give a pen.

  • Gift card, definitely. No one wants tacky branded merchandise or anything else that only $10 can buy.

    Scratchies.

    personalised $5 from HN

"I worked really hard and all I got was this mug"
"You don't have to be crazy to work here, but alcohol helps"
    "this is definitely not alcohol"

    $10 bucks, Don't even bother

My workplace gives $500 a month as a comparison. $10 is an insult, you'd be better off buying coffee and cake/donuts whatever once a month for the team and having it in the winner's honour.

    • Recognition for a job well done is far more valuable than anything that $10 can get you. I would seriously consider jnewau's suggestion.

  • We do quarterly team meetings and do 2 movie tickets

I'd do a coffee voucher for a local cafe.

    • i think that is a good idea as well.

    • Get one of them buy 10 coffees get one free cards, each week or month when the award goes to the candidate and you take them to get their free coffee (you use the 10 to buy) use the card and the tenth coffee is for you free for organizing LOL

    certificate + frame

I'd make it at least quarterly on that budget. $10 is a bit of an insult. See if you can get gift cards at a discount so you can stretch the budget further. Some companies offer 10-30% discounts on gift cards to corporates.

    Half-day off

  • $10 is kind of insulting. Perhaps donate it to a charity of the employees choosing, on their behalf.

  • I know there is a lot of opinion on 10$ is way less and I agree. 10 people per month and for around 50 departments, it is around 5000$ . still, I can agree 10$ is too less and I am not happy about it either. But it is all I can do at the moment. perhaps later on, I could try to double the amount. I am even surprised they introduced this as well when they are cutting costs and cancelling jobs everywhere you look.

So thank you for all your valuable comments, But i am helpless at the moment ! :(

    • 50 departments??
That is sounding like a corporate, which would be disappointing with that budget, but not a financial institution with the continued use of the format "10$"

  • no offense but $10 is a pretty pitiful reward, mite be better to just spend the money on some bikkies and some pizzas in the break room, this would encourage me more instead of working my guts out competing with others for that sweet $10. - For anyone who doesn't understand I'm saying to combine the rewards for something decent.
