I Bought an Item on eBay and Cancelled It Immediately, The Seller Still Sent It, What Should I Do?

Hi, I just wanted some advice about something thats happened to me which I'm a bit annoyed about, every detail is recorded below;

Ordered a charger off ebay at 23:37 on Sunday 14/10
Realised it didn't have QC so i ordered another one (from the same seller) at 23:39
Ordered another charger off the same seller with QC at 23:44
Cancelled the original charger order at 23:45 which I originally made at 23:37 (8 minutes earlier) via ebay.
Received an update that my cancellation request (at 13:15 the following day) stating that "we can't cancel your order because the seller already sent it on 15 Oct, 2018".
It's impossible that the seller sent the items before the cancellation, I was not expecting the cancellation request to not go through.

regarding the shipment

  • Ebay says item sent on 14/10
  • Paypal says 15/10
  • No Tracking
  • Order time: 11:37pm 14/10
  • Final order from the seller: 11:44pm 14/10
  • Cancellation time: 11:45pm 14/10

I've never had to return anything on ebay before and I don't feel like it's fair that I have to pay the return shipping fee or have to wait to have my money returned. What is my next step here?

Thanks

Edit: 19/10 The seller messaged me quite nicely and we agreed to do return shipping, PayPal is covering the cost via refunded returns.

Does the fact the reasoning is 'we can't cancel your order because the seller already sent it on 15 Oct, 2018' sufficient considering the stated timeframe? That's my main grievance with this.

      • Sellers get punished for sending items out in a poor time frame. I have ordered stuff at 10pm on a Sunday night and had a notification 5 mins later that the item has been marked as sent. They just mark it as sent so the system thinks they sent it promptly, when in fact it won’t get shipped for several days later (or weeks later if it’s from China)

If you are an eBay plus member and it was from an eBay plus store, maybe try the free returns? Also look into PayPal, they have some sort of free returns policy?

It’s a charger. A few dollars at most. Throw it in the cupboard as an emergency spare. Ok, so it’s not QC, but it will still do the job in a pinch.

You don't get a grievance because you're not entitled to cancel your order in the first place.

Bought is bought. A refund or cancellation is at their discretion

Okay so can I get a refund and return the item? Do I have to pay to ship it back? Should I go through paypal or ebay for this? This is all I want to know.

Most sellers on eBay don’t allow for change of mind. If you’ve activated it in PayPal they’ll refund up to $45 for shipping. The seller may charge you a restocking fee.

It’s perfectly legal what the seller has done. They don’t have to allow change of mind. I’ve never seen a cancellation option on eBay either,

Okay so can I get a refund and return the item?

Only if the seller allows it. Why do you think you're allowed to cancel and get a refund in the first place?

        • -1

I assumed buying something online from an Australian seller gives you the same rights as buying from a brick and mortar store.

          • +4

@henesey: Which you also don't get to return for change of mind, unless the seller agrees. How exactly do you think buying stuff works?

          • +1

@henesey: It does give you the same rights.

This has been discussed many times before. Stores giving you a refund for changing your mind is them doing you a favour.

something thats happened to me which I'm a bit annoyed about

Okay, explain to us your feeling of entitlement

I bought an item and cancelled it immediately

Oh you're one of those customers… Continue on…

Realised it didn't have QC so i ordered another one

I've heard about people with low IQ, but you are up there!

the seller still sent it, what should I do?

Do you honestly think this is the sellers issue like you claim it to be? No, it is not. It's a blood charger, you made a mistake so you jump on an internet forum when it doesn't go your way and try to rally up an army of a support for your stupidity and feeling of entitlement. You are kidding yourself…

Sorry I triggered you so badly, I just wanted some advice on returning an item and ideally getting out of paying the return shipping due to the timeframe of the order.

      • +3

You'll have to pay return shipping. How is your change of mind anyone's fault but your own?

      • +2

Sorry I triggered you so badly

From looking over your replies and your original post, the only one getting triggered here, is you.

It's a charger without qc, it must've cost like $5, barely worth returning lol cop it on the chin and move on

  • +3

It’s possible your seller sent out your items before deciding to read through their messages. Or they may have sent it out of spite, because it is annoying to have someone pay for something and then cancel - I cop this about 3 times a year and it pisses me off.

Keep it as a spare or give it to a friend that may benefit.

    • +1

Does it then become friends with benefits?

  • +4

deal with it, you now have 2 chargers

  • Reject delivery?

    • Sellers who have eParcel contract with Auspost actually get charged $10 for each return item.

    wow I really don't care

I care that you don't. lol

If you paid using paypal you can register for paypal returns. Paypal will fund the cost of returning the item to about $45 assuming the seller will accept returns. If not then you have an item and it is lesson learnt for today.

As a safety measure, if you buy something big and expensive always use paypal with your credit card as the funding source. If something really goes wrong you have both paypal and your credit card company who will act in your interest if something goes wrong. For example, you buy an iPad for $500 and the item arrives damaged. You immediately inform the seller and send it back. It is over 2 weeks and the seller has it back but you have no refund. You can file a paypal claim and also a chargeback through your credit card company.

    • Thank you.

Please understand that the way you think ebay works isn't the way it always works.
Most ebay vendors aren't individuals sitting on the sofa who go do their mailing once a day.
It is likely that your order was routed off to a Chinese drop ship facility that fulfill dozens of orders every minute for thousands of sellers around the world.
The way they keep costs low is to just ship stuff as fast and cheap as possible.
Your request is for the seller, who may personally be located in another country to the item, and have no business relationship with the white label drop shipper beyond settling invoices once a month, to leap into action when they got your request, contact the drop shipper before their staff pack your order and head off the shipment.

The drop shipper likely does not have staff standing by to take an urgent call to run down to the warehouse and prevent a delivery, and as a potential other customer, I don't want them to raise their costs by employing somebody to do this.
And your seller may well have not checked their ebay messages until the next day - again, I don't want my suppliers to pay for sales staff to be on hand at midnight to correct your errors, while it is very likely they automatically route your order to a 24/7 warehouse instantly.

Does this make it easier to understand why you got the response you did?

    • End of thread.

Please understand that the way you think ebay works isn't the way it always works.

At this point, it's not just eBay that OP doesn't understand, it's the entire concept of buying stuff.

    • Thank you for this.

    You bought two chargers.
    Tried to cancel one.
When it arrives, list it on eBay.com.au
    Get on with life.

  • Check with the seller for a return policy (some allow free returns for change of mind), most likely seller would ask you to either reject shipment when it arrives (though thats not too ethical since the postal company has to wear the cost), or return yourself, assuming you have the free return shipping with Paypal

Man I ordered a meal and pay for it then unable to change to another meal even it's just a second after.

Look into seller return policy, if it accept return, as long as you don't open the packaging, you will get refund (excluding postage cost if any).

Sign up for PayPal refunded return if you haven't, they will worth 8 times return in a year. However you only can use for any purchases AFTER you sign up.

Making mistake on a Sunday for Monday dispatch is just hard to fix in seller point of few. Many seller may just focus on deliveries as it accumulates over the weekend. Some good seller may or will pickup your cancellation request before sending. Some sellers also has this 'why bother' even they see your request, and still send the item, thinking there is likely hood that you will keep the item anyway.

    Call Paypal to get refund…

Leave positive feedback - AAA seller quick delivery

  • It's impossible that the seller sent the items before the cancellation,

Correct, but it is… possible and highly likely, that a very high volume seller would not have read your cancellation requesy message, before sending item out to you. They might have completely seperate people/department that handles posting everything out, than another department and group of people that answers messages. Especially if you are buying from china etc, not everyone that works there would have great english, and be responding to messages.
You are kinding thinking if they got the message and read it straight away. Something easy enough for yourself if you are selling 1 or 2 items and getting message straight to your phone notifications, not so simple, for a very high volume seller with multiple employees and departments etc.

Sounds like a cheap item, not much lost. And take it as a learning experience. . next time, cancel, wait for response to your cancellation request, then make new order after the item you don't want is already cancelled .

  • Sell it on Ebay for a slightly lower price - and i'll buy it off you.
