  • Not bad price tbh

    Are these rando brands?

    • +1

I had a galax gtx 570, lasted till upgrade to 970. No complaints.

    • +2

Galax is more of a SEA oceania brand

    • +1

Galax have been around for a while. They are just known to be the cheaper brand.

      I remember i bought a 970 gigabyte for $500 galax was about $400-420
However, people review them to be great value for money.

    • +7

They were formerly known as GALAXY if that springs any memories.

      • +1

I have owned several Galaxy and Galax cards over the years, all worked perfectly, no complaints here!

      • I don't think this is correct, Galaxy is/was a seperate brand.

      • Does anyone remember when Ladtek was a big name in graphics cards with their Winfast range. I think they still around but not on the same level as before.

    • No. This cooler looks weird though, I've heard good thing about the white cards from this brand.

      • I have the 1060 6gb EXOC card. Works great and looks great

    • GALAX is a brand of Palit which is one of the largest AIB partners.

  • Why is it known as RTX now and why 20XX not 11XX?

    • +2

Why is it known as RTX

because it has ray tracing (AI) cores in besides the standard rasterizer cores

      • +1

        Ooohhh.. guess next generation stuff.

      • +2

The RT Cores (ray tracing) are different to the Tensor cores (AI).

A massive chunk of the whole die is taken up with these cores.

        • LOL, so far we've been allowed SFA use of the aforementioned chunk!!

    • Coz rebranding yo!

I assume RTX is to stand out as a 'Raytracing' compatible model/series.

  • This or a similarly priced 1080ti? Replacing a 980.

    • +7

Depends on the price. If they are the exact same or less than $100 difference then I'd feel compelled to get this but otherwise 1080Ti.
Just my two cents, don't listen to anything I say because I'm retarded.

      • Yeah I'm retarded too, I just think I need a better gpu these days. Running a 21:9/2k on this 980 hurts in some games.

        • +2

I was about to tell you to consider the 2080Ti because I assumed it would be a few hundred more but they start at 2K WTF. I went on staticice and the cheapest 1080Ti I found was actually the same price as this from Zotac. So if you desperately need a GPU right now this seems like the best value although with the new polaris refresh coming soon and maybe NaVi early next year/late this year maybe it's wise to just wait and see how things play out? that's what I'm doing but I'm stuck on teamred because of FreeSync so it's different for me.

          • @Ostrk: Yeah I have g sync so I'm stuck on green. I will probably just hold out until prices drop (lol) or there's a really good deal. Just sucks having to be a peasant and not using full graphics.

            • @Kozhutki: Price drop expect 12m or later. Christmas next year I'd say as a ballpark.

              • @incipient: Yeah, I don't expect it soon. Wish I picked that 1080 deal that was posted a day or so ago.

                • @Kozhutki: That "deal" was more expensive than a card from this time last year! Nvidias pricing is pure profiteering.

If I were you (I'm running a 970 on 3x1080p panels) I'd wait it out. Hope for a Christmas sale this year and the 2070 release to bring prices down…maybe too optimistic. We'll see!

          • @Ostrk: Partly the price is due to scarcity I guess since no one can buy a 2080 Ti ATM.

      • Basically the same performance as the 1080ti without dlss (performance gain from that TBC).

They've basically released new hardware at exactly the same flop/$ price point. All the profits!

        • It's not exactly the same, it's faster but nowhere near enough to be justified to a lot of people given the performance increases with previous generations and the price.

          • @Diji1: The performance gap will widen as new titles come out, and it is much more power efficient. But having only 8GB has shown issues already when gaming at 4k, compared to the ti.

      • i was gonna say everything you said

      • Doesn't the 1080ti have more VRAM?

    • Check if the new RTX card is compatible with your mobo.

  • Great price. Bought this card from the previous deal. Can't fault it at this stage. It's not a big card either. Highest temperature reached was 75° when benchmarked on extreme settings 2560 × 1440 which seems to be normal. Very happy with it.

  • This or 1080ti, hmmm

    • +6

The new series cards are way overpriced - some speculate they did this because they still have a large inventory of the 1080s they want to clear. The RT capabilities of the new cards will not get a fair workout since not many games will support it in the near future, and by the time RT becomes a bit more common, a new generation (or two) of GPUs will come out anyways.

I would suggest skipping the 2080 series for now as it is barely an improvement over the 1080s.

    • +2

I'd be buying this given it's in the ballpark of buying a 1080 Ti.

The performance gap is only going to get better as drivers improve and this is unlikely to happen to the 1080 Ti at this stage.

  • Spewing, bought one of the Gigabyte 'Windforce RGB' cards then pulled all of the fans etc poff and put a waterblock on!! Could have saved a couple of hundred and waterblocked this instead.

    • Did you specially pick that card for liquid cooling? I read recently that there's a lot more on the card that needs cooling other than the gpu silicon itself.

      • Nope, best deal I could find for an RTX 2080 when i was looking. I've used the EK waterblock, not up and running yet, still wrestling with tubing and connectors!!

Alternatively, buy from Futu eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/332555179884), $1175.20 after PODCAST code, pay with 10% eBay gift cards, so eventual cost is $1057.68. Then use eBay Price Guarantee to get a eBay voucher worth $131.15 ($76.20 price difference + 5% of the MWave price $54.95).

    Eventual cost $926.53 (from 1057.68-131.15).

Next alternative, wait until 24th October, buy with 28 Degrees Credit Card with Shoppers Protection. Whenever you see the card price goes down within the 12 months period, claim with Shoppers Protection.

    • +2

damn that is some next level ozbargaining I can't even remember to use cashrewards lol

      • Seeing at how intentionally overpriced the RTX cards are at the moment, wait until 24th Oct and buy with a 28 Degrees Credit Card (or any credit card that gives you Price Reduction Protection) is definitely the way to go. When AMD's 7nm Navi hits, or even when Nvidia's likely announcement of its own 7nm product next year, the RTX cards will likely drop another $100-200.

        • why do you have to wait until oct 24?

          • @[Deactivated]: It's because 28 Degree's current Shoppers Protection only covers up to 6 months from purchase date, and restricted to same retailer. However, effective from 24th Oct 2018, changes will be introduced that it'll cover up to 12 months from purchase date, and from any Australian retailer (no longer the same retailer you purchased the item from).

See this discussion thread for more comments: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/402414 .

Very suitable for purchasing tech products that go down in price within a year, or those that have big sales every now and then (e.g. mobile phones, TV, consoles, computer parts etc)

            • @zrmx: What sort of business model is that? Are they banking that no one will bothered claiming?

              • @jonathonsunshine: I can only assume they've done the analysis and think they'll still be able to make profit. As the Shopper Protection does comes at a cost of 1% of your balance by statement date (but if you pay the balance off, it'll be free). It can be used as an incentive to persuade people to spend more with their card, and increase the chance of revenue by either interests, or the 1% fees.

            • @zrmx: or you could use Coles Mastercard with 24 months price protection

              • @azz: Yes, however I thought the Coles card protection only covers same retailer, rather than any retailer offered by the 28Degrees card. (However I haven't looked up the policy in quite some time so I don't know if Coles' one has been updated to include any retailer).

    • +1

Don't waste your 10% gift cards if you're going to get the money back from eBay anyway, you're costing yourself 10% (opportunity cost to use the gift cards on a real saving)

      • That would be a consideration also.

      • but its 10% OFF the ebay cards itself? using it here or later doesn't matter since its technically already a saving.

        • I haven't checked that zrmx's philosophy was right or the maths, I'm just too tired and since I'm not buying anything right now anyway I'm not going to try, but the key point was using a discounted gift card was pointless if ebay was going to give you a bigger refund if you didn't use it. Either way you pay the same. But if you use the gift card, it's gone.

  • 1080 Ti much better value

    • how so?

      • It performs the same as this card but can maybe find for 100-200 cheaper. No ray tracing but no games have that so yea,1080Ti

        • DLSS will be interesting to see though. RTX cards may have a big performance bump with that

    • The "ray tracing" effects look nice on the Tomb Raider 3 demo but it's just too pricy. And I'm sure it will be much better in the RTX21XX (RTX30XX?) series.

    • +2

The cheapest 1080Ti I found was the same price as this. Nowhere near the same value as this card has longer support and would only improve with driver updates that let games utilize it's hardware.

  • Can't directly compare, but boy am I glad to have picked up a second hand 1080Ti for $620 as soon as 2080 reviews came out.

I'm pretty sure second hand 1080Ti prices actually went up since September.

  • Does anyone buy a 2080 or 1080TI without 4k in mind? I got mine a few days ago, the rationale being that even if over kill for 1080p right now, in a few years time, 1080p will be more demanding but i'll still be laughing.

    • If you are pushing for something decent with 4k in mind, you should be going for 2080Ti in my opinion.

1080Ti/2080 is at a good spot for 1440p@144hz and probably overkill for lower resolutions depending on your target framerate which is dependent on your monitor.
