Help Me Decide a Tripod Size

Hi all,

I ordered a tripod from local retailer and got it delivered. Tripod i ordered was Vanguard 283CB. The box and manual says its 283CB but tripod sign says it is 283CT. The difference is only in terms of height and weight.

283CB is

165.5cm maximum lenght
135cm minimum lenght.
70.5cm folded lenght
2.7kgs weight

The one i received is

155cm maximum lenght
124cm min lenght
60cm folded
And weighs just 2.05Kg

I am 5'9 and i am finding it good but I am confused whether i keep it or return it (retailer is amazingly helpful and happy to exchange it. Thats what you except form an aussie seller :) )

People experienced in photography, please help.

  • Is it good to go with a taller tripod? It's a carbon fiber made tripod and is sturdy atleast in indoor environment. Is there any gain in going for a taller tripod that is also 700 grams heavier? I want to use it for outdoor portraits and environmental photography.

You'll possibly get a bit more stability with the heavier one, but if its higher, you'll cancel that out anyway.

I'd opt for the smaller, lighter one if it's handling your camera and heavy lens without issue. Easier to pack/carry/travel with IMO.

      • You reckon 700grams will make it more sturdy?

        • Marginally perhaps, all other things being equal.

A lighter tripod, better built could be easily more stable than a heavier tripod, poorly made.

  • For outdoor portraits you might want a greater height if you're using a medium to high telephoto. However if you're using it for travel where you want an environmental portrait style with say 35mm - 50mm lenses then the height is sufficient. Is it for travel?

    • I have a d750 (755grams) and 35/50/135mm sigma art lenses (655/510/1108) grams respectively. Iv will be traveling to locations in victoria for environmental portraits. I don't have a zoom lens yet but might get a 24-70 or 70 to 200mm in the future (if needed)
To get it to the eye level, i have to extend the center column to atleast 70-80% (for landscape/portrait)

      • I think if eye level is crucial then I would get a taller tripod. But do you need eye level for all your shots? Pros and cons with weight to carry around

  • If you have to extend centre column then it might be better to get the bigger one. The centre column is the least stable portion of the tripod. Having said that if you aren't shooting in high wind and using a remote the difference should be minor. Adding weight to increase stability can easily be done with the bag hook or a tripod tarp.

    • Opening the centre column @ 70% and hanging a bag for extra stability should be fine right? I am not sure what the extra 700grams weight will feel like with 283CB

      • It sounds like you are finding the current tripod good for your uses, so just keep it. There is likely to be minimal difference provided you don't need the extra height of the bigger tripod.

  • Size doesn't matter ;)
