  • Rubbish product, generally terrible for the environment with plenty of eco-friendly alternatives.

  • -1

75c for 200 is cheap. Perfect for parties and picnics.

    • +2

Anything by the beach or waterways.

  • Sick and tired with this moral imposition and the sheep mentality that "plastic is bad"

Why dont the same people say condom is bad too since I see lots of litter condom on streets.

I will visit Big W for this. Thanks OP!!!!

    • Where the bloody hell do you live where people are leaving dingas on the street?

Also at least condoms serve a purpose. Unless there is a medical purpose you shouldn’t use a straw.

  • I'm trying to think of an idea of how all these straws could be used in some way or put somewhere that isn't going to affect the environment, i have no idea though. Any ideas? I seriously don't know what to do when i end up with the odd straw, i'm like a deer in the headlights with that shite. Anyway I'd say dont buy them unless you have some great reason for it and I doubt you do

  • +3

i’m with the people against plastic straws.

    • +1

So not really against plastic straws.

  • +4

Joining the chorus against plastic straws. If you need to use a straw, metal straws are better value and last a lifetime.

  • +2

Metal Straws are the way to go these days!

    • -1

Stop trying to make metal straws a thing. It's not gonna happen.

  • Time to stock up.

  • +4

If everyone just tried to reduce their plastic usage as much as possible, we can make an impact to the amount of plastic being discarded in landfills or that end up in the environment. This isn't about being a tree hugger or a hippie. Everyone can make changes to their behaviour and not have a blasé attitude that one small thing won't make a difference. It's the cumulative effect of quantity and time that will.

  • +1

This has been a fascinating read lol.

I'm a straw user - I got into the habit when I got braces and could never quite break it afterwards. I have been using plastic but now I'm converting to the reusable kinds. Straight metal never worked for me because I'm a straw biter but I have ordered a collapsible metal straw with silicone tips from a Kickstarter - finalstraw and that should be coming in the next month or so. They have a lifetime warranty and can be attached to a key ring so there's no excuse for forgetting them!

As for the cleaning them issue that everyone keeps bringing up - they and other metal straws come with a cleaning brush, and the metal straws are much wider than a standard plastic straw so less places for gunk to get caught.

As for minimising plastic usage, I don't use single use water bottles (biggest waste of money you can find and an environmental disaster), and I use glass storage containers for lunches and the like.

  • +2

    Because, F U environment

    • +1

Just create a bogeyman by attaching it to the environment. Well played.

      • All the cool kids are doing it!

Honestly pathetic - presumably adults clinging to these kinds of bs for a bit of self-esteem boost.

  • +3

Neg view because our or poor environment

  • -1

i getting stainless steel straw, help the earth and our children future even just a bit. But this is still a good deal.

  • +2

If you need to use a straw please get yourself a stainless steel one. There really is no need for straws, for your 1 minute of use this straw will exist in landfill or worse in oceans for long time. It’s not worth it.

  • The only reason why straws are not recyclable is because their individual size, not because of the plastic type, heck even unlikely due to contamination from being a food item.
Your pizza box or unrecyclable oily food container (cos I bet most of you won't bother prewashing it) is an even bigger waste than a straw.

That was the thing about that WoW story, it only had littering issues. If many people aren't still bothered to bring in reusable shopping bags, do you think they'd be bothered washing up an SS straw? Or do it without wasting more precious resource is water doing it.

    • You're clutching onto too many straws there mate.

  • +2

Just use your mouth like a human would. First world problems.

  • Congratulations on getting your first Popular Deal badge Op. A fine effort.

  • +3

Metal straws are better value in the long run for your wallet and the environment.

  • -1

81% agree and 19% Disagree, Ozbargain has spoken, plastic straws are a bargain and are here to stay!

    • I would say 50/50 if you look at the votes in the first comment

  • Any bargains on plastic disposable swizzle sticks?

  • +2

Eh. Everybody going on about metal straws. I've never had to use a straw. Just drink straight from the glass… Single use plastics are on the way out. It's a neg from me due to the ethical and environmental ramifications of this product

  • +2

    Say no to useless plastic

  • +2

everyone is anti-straw. I would get metal or paper ones.

  • +2

    I like turtles

    • In a soup or BBQ?

  • +2

I forgot to mention that yes, there are people that actually do need plastic straws, due to an eating/drinking issue or a disability. I don't demonise them in any way but there are reusable straws out there now that can help to alleviate plastic straw use for those. Some examples are silicone straws that are pre-bent and you can even find positionable paper straws that are heavier duty than the ones that you can get in KMart and $2 shops.

Yes, hygiene is a very important issue for these people and one that shouldn't be overlooked but paper straws can be disposed of, and the silicone ones can be extremely well cleaned and even sterilised.

  • Bargain, 200 brand new Kazoo's!

    https://youtu.be/lEZRwqg7RAY

You can't do that with Paper or Metal Straws.

  • Quick Q - will these help me if I want to buy a new BMW worth $100k for $80k… I dont want to stinge…

    • +1

Buy a few thousand, relabel them as "re-usable and environmentally friendly because it comes with a guide on how to throw them into the bin instead of into the sea!"

You'll get all the idiots in the comments clamouring to pre-order.

  • That turtle must have been way too enthusiastic in getting the straw that far up its nose though.

I don't think the drug references are entirely miguided.

  • Love plastic straws due to convenience and think our polluting is nothing compared to other countries. In saying that I might pick these up sometime, https://www.kmart.com.au/product/4-pack-metal-straws/2238328

  • Oh I'm going to be such a mean parent and teach my kids how to drink from a cup and never let a straw near them as they are unnecessary…

    • By having kids you are already part of the problem.

    • +2

Over population is a bigger problem for the planet than plastic will ever be. Say no to killing the environment, do something about that.

  • free delivery for purchase of $80 or more until the 31st https://www.bigw.com.au/free-delivery

  • Yeah, one step at a time, first plastic bags, it is now time for straws.

  • -1

Irresponsible post (though you could say that about 3/4 of this site's landfill 'deals').

  • Came here for robust debate on environmental impact of plastic straws and was not disappoint!

    • +2

      …ed.

  • -4

    Defective product.

    • +3

They're meant to bend like that.

  • -1

    defective product

    • +3

      BS comment.

  • +1

there is a hidden future cost

    • +1

That can be said for 99% of things.

  • Please use with care. Previously I used to brush off such things until I saw how they really hurt aquatic life. Small changes can really go a long way.

  • When negative externalities are taken into account (ie 1000 years before plastic straw breaks down), these are poor value compared to paper or metal.

    • When was the earliest plastic straw made?

    • How long does it take for a plastic milk bottle or water bottle to break down?

  • -1

this product is far more destructive than useful

  • Bad for the environment

    • -1

      How so?

  • +1

stainless steel straws are the way to go… teaching you to clean up after yourselves.

  • +3

    Thanks
    Bought 10

  • The same sheep negging this deal will be in another deal for a plastic product praising it. The hypocrisy is just so thick in the air you can smell it.

  • +1

Good deal, bought 2. One pack to use, one pack to throw a straw into a river for every neg this deal got.

    • good job a true winner

  • Free at maccas.

  • It takes up to 200 yrs to decompose

    https://get-green-now.com/environmental-impact-plastic-straw…

Ok, you will get a free straw with your fish. Still intact.
Feels sorry for your great great great grand kids though, if they catches those 200 yrs old fishes.

    • "The first plastic based on a synthetic polymer was made from phenol and formaldehyde, with the first viable and cheap synthesis methods invented in 1907"

      You are guessing.

  • I'm not going to neg but seriously this should be put to the Oz Bargain community.

Should this sort of deal be allowed?
