Unfixable Slow Leak in The Tyres

Hi Ozbargainers,

I had a plug in the rear tyre and it was giving me this slow leak of death (drops from 33 psi to 28 psi in 2 weeks). I took it to a tyre shop and they said it was not fixable because the guy who did the tyre last time took out too much of the tyre before attaching the patch from inside and a small section of wires is now exposed. He was supposed to sand the surface and then glue the patch on. The gas is leaking through the wires then around the plug. They said it was poor repair that would cost me a new tyre. They patched it up and told me it would leak again for sure.

What do you think? I felt that they may have just chipped off the rubber and exposed the wires underneath to get me to buy a new tyre, but in the end I still wanted to trust them because I don't know if this was a legit reason.

Thank you!

Plug from outside using those snot strips? also how is exposing wires on inside face causing leak? what about the rubber over the wire on the outside? if your wire is exposed on the outside your tyre is very dangerous.

    Try replacing the tyre.

  • What kind of gas is the tyre leaking?

      100% pure Nitrogen

      • Nah, it was an 80% Nitrogen, 20% oxygen mix…

Go to your mechanic and pick up a used tyre. Those things are like… $20?

It's impossible for us to know without actually seeing your tyre. Basically, without knowing anything more about your situation, get a new tyre. You shouldn't cheap out on your tyres. Maybe it's not apparent every time you get in a car, but in the rain, they're the difference between life and death.

    It's a tyre.

    Buy a new one.

    Drive.

  • 5% nitrogen makes good guinness draft beer where do you park your car?

  • Few things can made the tyre leak, valve, chrome on rim peeling off, dirt build up around the rim, the repair patch didn't push down even enough, or they didn't use sealer to cover the patch.

I never get tired of leek soup.

I think its part of the master plan from the tire industry to extract money from us the consumer. I myself realised this many years ago and stopped replacing my tires. Four years later I am now driving on rims. Sure, its not comfortable and there is alot of sparks, but I feel better knowing they did not rip me off.

Seriously, buy a tyre its not worth the risk at 100km per hour.

    • Ha! You've only fallen for the rim-industry's master plan to bankrupt tyre makers and gain a monopoly over the round-rolly-thingy market!

  • Just buy a new tyre. We recently had an almost new tyre punctured right at the centre. I thought it was repairable but it wasn't.

  • Agreeing with everyone else, new tyre. We had a slow leak in a tyre that we just kept putting more air in, this ended up unfixable as well due to inflating it so many times. Take it to a Blairs Tyres if you have one near you, can't recommend them enough.

  • The large tyre chain shops will always say that a tyre is unrepairable and needs replacing because they want to sell new ones.

    Try a different shop

  • Yeah just buy a new tyre not worth the hassle of worrying about it. If it's any consolation I had a nail go through a 2 day-old tyre once, not fixable so had to suck it up and buy another tyre. Life happens.

Seriously, just get a new tyre. Here's a tip, you will go backwards and forwards with some tyre shop for days (weeks?) and at the end of it all your tyre ain't going to get fixed/replaced. All the while you're driving around on a potentially dangerous tyre.

Do you want to drop the cash for a new tyre, be safe when driving and move on … or put yourself through days of hassle that will go nowhere and risk having the thing suddenly disintegrate at 100km/h?

  • New tyre

  • I think the OP is asking a few things, eg if the explanation is legit or if we think the 2nd tyre guy was trying to cover up their own mistake by blaming a previous repair maybe? Or just trying to sell a new tyre?

I doubt anyone could answer with 100% certainty.

My only suggestion is to get a second opinion I guess? Then likely a new tyre.

Or can't you go back to the 1st repair place and complain, based on the findings of the 2nd place?

Yes that was what I did, the first place said they never do things like this. Now I don't know who to trust anymore. It is not as easy as changing into a new tyre, it's like I don't know who to turn to if I get another problem with the car. I am yet to find an honest place to get my car repaired.

Edit: I am just jealous of people who have "their mechanics"

Me too! I swear they don't exist!

Just add air every time you fill up with fuel. No need for a repair of a repair or a new tyre.

I have a rear tyre that keeps deflating. Can’t be bothered getting it fixed so I just pump it up every week or two.

  • We had something similar. I had some tyre foam / flat repair stuff left from another car, just a tiny bit… finished off the can and haven't had a drop in PSI since.
    Woo!
