What speeds do Average Speed Cameras fine

Just wondering if anyone has been pinged for exceeding the speed limit in the Port Wakefield/Virginia average speed camera zone in SA. It is a 50km long zone, and AFAIK covers cars and trucks. The cameras at each end are also instant speed cameras.

  • good question and i'm sure a lot of the goody two shoes will be along shortly to tell you the obvious - don't speed.

but having said that, most speedos are wrong by up to 10%, so what's indicated on the needle isn't usually accurate. i use a gps based app on the phone and i think it's much more accurate. however SAPOL brag about this average zone being super accurate.

that said, i googled this and found an article that said the lowest fine issued was around 118km/h, so the speedo would've read much higher than that for that person.

i find it strange that there are no 'flashes' when you enter/exit this zone, because your plate is recorded at entry/exit. i guess maybe it does at night?

i went through once a bit fast and worked out my average speed was 111km/h and didn't get anything in the mail.

it's definitely a zone you can't speed and you should stick to 110 on your speedo (108 actual, for me).

    • The cameras use infrared lighting, which of course we cannot see. However if you look directly into the IR source you should be able to see a light red flicker as it pulses on and off when you drive over the pressure sensor in the ground.

Also yes they can most definitely be out by at least 10%, my old cars analogue speedo would show 110 yet the digital one would show 104, and the digital one was out by 2km/h from factory. So I was really doing 102km/h.

I would have to do 119km/h on the needle and 112km/h on the digital speedo to be doing the actual 110km/h. (Never received any fines by doing this and driving through hundreds of speed cameras)

      Don't, speed.

Speedos are a few kms over on purpose

Also if non standard tyres are used the speedo could go out of whack, due to the cirumferance changing ing , I believe

Are you saying ignoring speed limits and endangering other road users is a smart idea?

obviously didn't read the rest of my post ^^

  • I think it varies depending on state with Vic being the worst.

Have a read through this site, I'm sure you'll find lots of interesting info.

and a link to purchase an e-book

  • Are you talking about the northern expressway?

  • Interesting responses, but I hadn’t intended to touch off a discussion about accuracies of speedos. I set my speed using a GPS speed reading, at the speed limit of 110 km/h, but as my OP said, I was curious to know whether anybody has been pinged, and if so at what speed. interesting one of the answers said 118, but at the end of the day don’t speed!
