Many 4K HDR Movies to Own $4.99-$9.99 in iTunes, eg. The Dark Knight Trilogy Films $7.99 Each, Were $14.99

260

iTunes has a bunch of recent and popular 4K movies on sale at the moment for between $4.99 and $9.99. Many of these films also include Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. To view in 4K you need either an Apple TV 4K, an iPad Pro made in the last 2 years or an iPhone X or newer. Movies can also be watched through iTunes on other Apple devices but these devices will only display the films in HD.
To view films in 4K with Dolby Vision you need at least a 17mbps internet connection.

Remember to use CASHREWARDS for 4.9% cashback

    • I think 20% off iTunes cards are better than 5% cashback..

      • Of course, but you can have both applied!

        • +1

How’s that? Go to the iTunes web site through CASHREWARDS and buy using store credit?.. I thought cashback only worked with cash (credit card) payments..

          • @kevmi: Yes, store credits work fine for me. Give it a go.

Thanks for listing all the titles, you even categorised them. Fair effort!

    • No worries, there’s actually a lot more on sale, these are just the ones I thought were the pick of the bunch.

  • Stupid how you don’t own the 4K movie. You buy the 4K version but really only own the 1080p version as the 4K has to be streamed only ;(

    • +2

I find streaming very convenient; no need to clog up hard drive space with films you only watch every now and then and no cluttered shelf space with physical media. The video and audio quality is excellent and the prices are usually about half the cost or less compared to Blu-Ray. Yet to find a downside really.

Depends on your setup and how picky you are, but streaming is not at all the same level as full Blu-ray quality. There is significantly more compression and it's quite obvious when it comes to colour gradients and sound. Streaming Atmos is Dolby Digital+ whilst UHD Blu-ray Atmos is Dolby True HD

4k streaming is still a high quality, convenient option, and if you're watching in your lounge room it's perfect. But for home theatres, Blu-ray is the way to go in my opinion.

        • Really depends on the film; I have 4K blu rays and digital iTunes copies of films like Wonder Woman, Justice League and The Greatest Showman and you can barely tell the difference between them. That said, the blu ray copy of Planet Earth II is far superior to any streaming options I’ve seen. Really depends what kind of deals you find; if I can pay half the price for a digital copy compared to physical and only take a very slight hit in picture quality then I’d rather save the money, but everyone has their own priorities.

@mr_me450: So is saying the content is 4k almost false if it's streamed? As obviously streamed 4k is no where near the quality of 66 to 100gb 4k Blu ray disc. I'm guessing a lot of non technical people presume they are getting the same quality…

            • +3

@Sammyboy: How would it be false? 4K refers to the resolution, which is the same in either format. The difference in quality comes down to bitrate and that difference is pretty negligible for most content in my experience. If you want the blu ray, go pay $20-$40 for it; if you want the stream pay $5-$20 for it.

              • @mr_me450: Or perhaps there should be a classification of the type of 4k then. A high quality full hd Blu ray definately looks better than streamed 4k. So in theory is bitrate more important than resolution?

                • @Sammyboy: You think a full HD Blu Ray looks better than 4K streamed? The Blu Ray would have 4 times less the resolution and no Dolby Vision or Atmos; makes no sense. If you’re referring to a UHD blu-ray then I suggest you do some of your own comparisons; in my experience the difference is minimal, to the point where I can only tell the difference by pausing on individual frames and starring at the picture from 30 cm in front of the TV; certainly not average viewing conditions.

                  • @mr_me450: Interesting article comparing all formats https://www.whathifi.com/amp/features/4k-streaming-vs-4k-blu…

New resolution on TVs and discs is definitely a smart way to milk more money from the same movies. I have so many movies which I bought on DVD then Blu ray and then 3d Blu ray and now on 4K!

                    • @Sammyboy: I’d be careful making assessments based on that 2016 article; streaming quality has come a long way since then and iTunes streams are far superior to Netflix. I have a bunch I’ve bought on all formats too. Disappointing 3D blu Ray Production seems to be winding down as that’s definitely my preferred format, although I know I’m in the minority on that one. I was very pleased when iTunes upgraded all my HD iTunes films to 4K for nothing though. If only Australia had a similar disc to digital upgrade path similar to what is offered in the US through Vudu.

                      • @mr_me450: So looks like the concerns is 4K HDR Blu-Ray > 4K HDR Stream > 1080p Blu-Ray and 4k non hdr/dv stream > 1080p Stream.

Of course I'm guessing 4k streaming depends on the internet connection available? If on ADSL 2+ or NBN<25mbps then I would presume 4k streaming isn't going to be very good…

                        • @Sammyboy: Yes, that’s a fair summary. If you’re on ADSL or less than 25mbps then 4K streaming is not really a worthwhile option; if you own 4K it will just default to the best available stream for your connection which will probably be 1080p with the possibility of retaining HDR10 and Dolby Atmos features if you’re lucky. If that’s your situation you’ll have a more consistent experience by playing from physical media.

      • I just wish they have you the option to download the 4K version

        • Totally reasonable; it would be nice to at least have the option.

        • Its not the tech which is the limitation, its about the licensing issues limiting download option.
Studio's are scared to death about someone ripping the downloaded files.

          • @ozdesi: You can do it with 1080p Versions so just thought the option for 4K would be nice to have even tho it would be big

  • Previously on one of these iTunes posts, someone kindly mentioned they used the app/website CheapCharts and it’s been my go to place to watch for any deals. They give you all the previous price changes and dates they happened so you can see if the current offer is the cheapest (highlighted in Gold) it’s ever been or if the price has gone up (highlighted in Red) or just a reduced price (highlighted in Green). It will also let you know if the movie has a bundle pack which is normally (but not always) cheaper.
