Renting a Vehicle With or Without Insurance?

I am looking at renting a vehicle in Gold Coast for a couple of days through the website - easyrentcars.com.

Do you know how I can avoid paying the 3rd party insurance associated with the rental? I am happy to get insurance, but in my experience, the documentation of the insurance is not associated with the car rental establishment.

What are your suggestions please.

You want to drive someone else's vehicle without insurance?

    • No I had always intended on getting insurance for the rental vehicle, Id be crazy not to. Just wandering if I can avoid the 3rd party insurance, and having a look at cost of other methods that OB users use.

I think that if you got into an accident, 1st party is you the renter, 2nd party is the owner of the vehicle (easyrentcars.com) and 3rd party would be who you got into an accident with.
Maybe being a little anal, but you want to understand the terminology in order to understand what you are buying.

Look at credit card and if covers excess, pay with that. If renting through small rental companies and even some large ones would be careful, and do research first on reviews. Take pictures before and after, record and point out any damage and get them to check car after return. Sometimes better to pay more than be charged and accused of damage.

  • Why would you not want to have third party? If you don't have it, if you crash into a Tesla or drive through a house you could be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rental cars in Australia all come with insurance - some limitations (areas of use/non-use, no underbody/overhead damage, etc) but all covered. Generally with higher excesses (4k+).

Just get rental excess coverage via credit cards or domestic travel insurance.

  • Some will also want to put a 'hold' on your credit card for a couple of thousand if you do it this way as they say travel insurance takes ages to pay out.

    • Mostly Correct. You pay the excess, and your relationship with the rental company is ended. The claim from your travel insurance, credit card, etc. Is your responsibility and the rental company doesnt care - slightly different in the USA however.

Keep in mind that not at fault accidents will also incur the excess in rental cars and be refunded once they recover from the other party.

Are you going to have an accident?

    • Believe me, I would kick my own arse if I had a accident with no insurance - just saves me having a sore arse.

      • and being a contortionist. LOL

      • haha the number of posts here from people who have accidents without insurance makes me think otherwise.

Have a happy holiday! Make sure you're covered (the car, that is!)
