Shping - What Do You Think?

I just signed up for shping (https://www.shping.com/) and thought I'd flag it as a possible easy way to get some moula for lonely ozbargainers (I've requested a wiki referral link to the mods if appropriate).
In the same way I don't trust every website I ever come across so happy for any feedback.

According to the website, Shping is an app that allows users to Scan barcodes, upload photos, write reviews and more to earn Shping Coins which are then exchangeable for money (or bitcoin etc). The referral gives the referrer and referree each 1,000 shping points which is equal to approximately 50 cents at current rate.

Basically it gives some shping - a cryptocurrency - for every time you scan anything that has a barcode. You can also get shping for adding photos, writing reviews and adding new products.
In one scanning spree today of about half an hour I earned 13,000 shping which is worth about $6.
{EDIT: At any time the crypto can be exchanged for cash into a bank account}

The bit that seems bizarre is the 'why' and 'how' they're doing this. A stack of reviews seem to show they're a legit business - eg https://www.abitgreedy.com/shping/ - but I don't see how it really works because it is based on cryptocurrency which is a new world to me.

Any thoughts?

This is pay for review site mixed with crypto - because they are selling your scans / reviews onto 3rd party market research the same as flybuys/woolworths card does and are just assuming that if you pick up and scan a product you have shown interest in it - and can probably tell if someone has just scanned everything in the entire store for points - so if they are smart they probably have a limit or cap or ignore those people for their research purposes .

The entire nonsense about product recalls and country of origin will never take off imo and are just selling points for the ipo - say you buy cheese weekly , why would you scan the same cheese every time you shop seeing thst you dont get any extra coins and would never find out its recalled using the app .

Plus it has all the negatives/positives of crypto and a stupid name that can be shopping or shipping and will autocorrected on any search engine .

I dont think it will have a long shelf life .

    • So I should scan lots while I can 😀😀

      • If you want to invest and gamble leave some coins in your account but if i was you i would cash part of it out so you didnt spend a couple hours scanning, photographing and reviewing products for nothing .

  • Have you cashed out into a bank account yet?

    • 0.55cents so far, only a couple of days ago so isn't showing yet.

  • Any bargains?

  • get in early and cash out fast

Hi Guys, I’m Maryann, the Marketing Manager for Shping. I thought I’d jump in here to answer some of your questions.

Shping is a product search engine for shoppers which offers cryptocurrency rewards for user activity. This activity covers anything from scans, writing reviews, adding photos or new products and even inviting mates to join. As Sean explained, you can cash out these rewards straight to your bank account and convert your Shping Coins to Australian Dollars.

How we operate is that brands sign up to run rewards campaigns where they can build out the product pages with relevant content to help you decide on what to buy, and you have access to trusted product information. They will ultimately reward you for your reviews, video views, completing surveys and scans etc, rather than paying advertising platforms like Facebook instead.

We also have a reserve of Shping Coins to offers users for scans, reviews, adding new products and referring mates. We don’t sell off your user details to third party market research firms, but we do allow partner brands to access scans and relevant info on a subscription model.

For Aussie shoppers on a Basic level, you earn at least 1 cent per scan. You do get coins when you scan the same product multiple times like cheese as long as it’s not during the same day. So you can earn $$ on every grocery shop you do. The more you scan, the more you earn. With regular use, you would be upgraded to Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels to earn more. Our Platinum users earn the following:

    • Scan a product = AUD $0.10. For example: If you shop 100 items per month, you’ll get $10 back.
    • Add a product review = AUD $0.20
    • Invite a buddy (and he/she accepts) = 1,000 Shping Coins each (equivalent to $0.46)
    • Add a new product = 500 Shping Coins (equivalent to $0.23)

While the country of origin or recall feature might not be top of mind for everyone, it is more relevant in other countries. Food safety and quality is of a pretty high standard in Australia, but we still get issues like food tampering in strawberries or listeria in Xmas hams.

I’m happy to answer any other question you may have or feel free to try it out. It’s available on both app stores for free. Hope to see you on Shping.

    Cheers, Maryann

PS - sorry you don’t like the name, @qwerty. We’re quite fond of it :)

  • Has anyone had any success with it? I tried it only recently, I was attempting to see if it can load on to Qantas travel money card. The value was pretty small like 10cents. But upon redeeming the reward it asked me to enter the mobile number which I did in the international form as well. Then it popped up with an uh-oh, we have encountered an error. Please check your details are correct. Which I can assure it was correct. I tried my parent's number also didn't work. Is it stopping payout? Am I too late to this game?

    • Nevermind, it was a mistake on my side afterall. That '+' sign…
