This exact same thing happened to me! So I called them and said how can you conditionally approve me then reject after I’ve given you my payslips?

The guy on the phone said I was put down as a casual employee because my payslips didn’t show my annual leave balance! And that’s why I was rejected. I told him it that I will send my statement of service and proof of permanent full time employment and they reassessed my application and I was approved the next day. Highly recommend giving them a call to find out why, especially if it’s something as simple as being listed as casual when you are not. They also told me they will clear it against my credit file if it comes up that I was declined.

Not sure why they couldn’t just call and ask for proof of employment rather than just rejecting…

  • thanks got my rego and car insurance coming up, thats 2k right there

    • Is car rego considered a 'government payment' and therefore ineligible? I'm wondering about this on my own card

      • +1

I think from my understanding of it is.(correct me if I'm wrong). If your purchase is via BPAY, it won't count towards getting points. But if you pay it via the credit method where you've encounter a credit fees then you're eligible for those points.

        • Correct. Don't do it through bank websites, thats BPay. Go to the company you need to pay and pay from there. Most likely they will charge a small % fee. I don't mind this. Then it is counted towards getting points.

          But.

If that company is government bodies, and the bank t&C stated that it won't counted, the bank may still be able to tell, from the transaction history description.

  • Damn, I won't be able to churn until April… hopefully this deal will still be on by then.

    • Unlikely…

  • Too many inquiries on my bloody credit report to take this on. I'm sitting under good rating for now and am planning to do a home loan top up shortly. I so wanna jump on this card God dammit.

    • That was $179 fee for Qantas and free for Amplitude.

      • Thanks. Sorry, I linked the wrong one. I meant this one but looks like that expired.

        • Yeah it looks like it's the same deal - they've just reactivated it.

  • Damn, last year I had to pay $129 annual fee :(

  • What are "Must spend $4,000 on eligible purchases " ?

    • +1

you must spend $4000 within the 90 days of when the cc is approved. Eligible purchases are all purchases except the ones they list. Usually credit transfers etc.

      4K in 3month is not that much, it's just 1.3K a month.

Weekly groceries, utility bills, entertainment, they add up pretty quickly.

Don't forget Valentines and Easter is coming up too ;)

    • Pay your home/car/health insurance up front, supermarket giftcards for the rest

    Buy gift cards.
Flip them in gumtree or ozb classified (at a discount to facevalue while still breaking even or at a profit).
    Rinse and repeat.

    • But they are discount codes but physiical cards, hard to sell

Worst customer experience I have ever seen.

Got approved and cancelled my card 3 days into it. No call. Nothing.

After 10 calls, found out they did a random audit on me.

Had to provider proof of everything. Wages, bank accounts, savings, proof of residency and driver's license.

Long story short. 3 weeks later, got approved AGAIN.

    RUBBISH SERVICE.

If this doesn't happen to you, good deal, otherwise, shocking!

    • Seems like a lot of hassle to go through just to unconciously have your behavior changed so that you lose more money than before you obtained a credit facility.

          • @SBOB: I thought the credit card was 6k limit as thats what i saw at a glance, i originally had 30x as this would be correct, but then changed to 20 to emphasis my point and but not be so assy and brutal about it

@unclesnake I don't know what they are checking but salary doesn't seem to have much to do with it. I have a similar story to you.

    • usually salary and job status (perm not contracts) are the main factor. assets are not. retired/unemployed with $200k cash maybe be not attractive for banks.

  • +10

St George are terrible to deal with. I comfortably met eligibility criteria, so I applied for the last deal (that had an annual fee) and was conditionally approved.

I had to provide either recent payslips OR a bank statement showing recent pay going in. I provided payslips.

I was then requested to also provide bank statements to verify the pay. I reluctantly provided these - but redacted all the irrelevant information (i.e non-salary entries). St George refused to accept these redacted bank statements and insisted they needed the full bank statements despite claiming they only wanted to verify salary information.

The whole experience made me quite uncomfortable, so I withdrew the application. If they wanted more details on my expenses, I would have been willing to provide it - but they were disingenuous and call centre hid behind vague assertions about “company policy”.

Perhaps you will have better luck that I did (and some others it seems)

    • Lol, it seems I'm going through exactly the same even though all my banking is with them….

  • I had a St george credit card and closed in early 2017, will i qualify for this 80k bonus points??
I note it doesn't say a time limit whether previous owners that had a similar credit card in last 12 months will not qualify etc etc.

      Tldr ;)

  • Page now works and I got conditionally approved.

  • Damn. I had this credit card within the past 12 months. I guess my application won't be approved on this basis.

  • +1

Received my card from last deal last week. St George is a horrible bank to deal with. Submitted my application successfully online after 5 failed attempts only to be asked to visit a branch as their system didn't save the full details in my application.

The customer service was a pain to deal with and hung up on me after putting me on hold. Hope I get my bonus points without any issues. Will get far away from this incapable bunch as soon as my points arrive.

  • +1

Tossing up between this and the ANZ FF Black deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/409692). $0 vs $275 annual fee, but you get 40k more QFF points. $4k vs $7.5k minimum spend in first 3 mths is pretty steep, although I should be able to manage that. No Apple Pay with St George vs Apple Pay wth ANZ, which is a big convenience factor for me. But biggest potential dealbreaker is the fact that I've been approved for this card twice over the past several years so I'm more confident of getting approved, vs St George which sounds like they are overly strict and a pain to deal with.

    • -1

      Just apply both?

    • +1

By just looking from bonus point of view, never paid for annual fee,, bonus points would come on board from time to time. Extra 40k point vs $275

      • I am with you, aiming not to pay any annual fee, waiting for the new ANZ annual fee free round lol

  • I'm looking for the next free card deal to go onto after Westpac. Sounds like I'm better off holding off for another bank's deal to roll around again instead of St G from the all these comments.

    • I didn't have any problems signing up for the last free card in December ….just had to be patient since it took 2 weeks and a bit.

    • After checking out the latest comments about even getting the bonus points, I think I'll pass …
      - credit inquiry hit and may not even get it (I should be plenty over the criteria too)
      - may not even get the bonus points without fuss

Best of luck to others I'll save myself the potential hassle at this stage. Can hold onto my current card for another few months for now.

  • +1

So just to clarify, you get the card, make the spend, get the points, transfer to QF account, cancel card, repeat with a different bank. free holiday. Is that right?

    • +2

yes that's right except the cancel the card bit. Why cancel card? Keep accumulating QFF points while you spend and you need an active card for the lounge passes.

      • +4

Cancel card to reset the 12 month waiting period to get the bonus points again when it's next offered.
Also to increase your available credit to be used on other credit card offers while you're waiting.
And a little boost to your credit score.

      • Because there are better Qantas earning cards to have as your day to day, e.g. Qantas MC platinum is $1 = 1 point and more when using Qantas to shop/book, and 1.5 overseas.

    • Always.

  • +1

St George have terrible service. Don't be surprised if you meet criteria and are still rejected.

  • I have got rejected by them even though I have got higher target requirements for other cards. They usually read out a general list of why you were not eligible when you ask for more details.

  • -2

What does 80,000 bonus Qantas Points give me?

    • +1

      Groans. Mostly groans.

      • $1040 if you sell it here

        • -1

          Really $1040?

          • -1

@welcomeUniverseWorld: yes that is the upper market price. i say between 960 and 1040.
interested now? :) like i keep saying this is not a peanut money. this is serious thing. so dont waste time, apply, spend fast, get the point, cancel fast.

  • -1

Doesnt sound like a good deal if I only just meet the criteria and earn exactly 75k. Think I should pass.

  • Is the a Qantas rewards fee applicable here? Am I missing something (e.g. this is a Westpac only thing)?

    Thanks OzB fam.

    • no, nothing to pay

  • Just to clarify, once approved, I can get the points/free flights etc and then cancel the card at no cost?

    • yep, just wait till you've got your points and lounge passes

      • +1

Withh lounge passes these days I think they'll be automatically cancelled if you close your account. Probably better to use the passes first… if it's important to you.

        • ah, didn't know that! Thanks

          • @zoner: That's the theory behind the new electronic passes anyway. I haven't put it to the test. It would be interesting to know if anyone else has.

        • Fairly sure that doesn't happen. The passes appear in your QFF account and you are free to use it or gift it to someone else, the bank is not going to go back to QFF to cancel them.

          • @kwokask: "The passes appear in your QFF account and you are free to use it or gift it to someone else, "

so its ok to transfer passes to random not family members (like the points), correct?

            • @CyberMurning: Can confirm. Requested lounge passes from ANZ FF Black in December, closed ANZ card the next day. Passes still show in Qantas account with 1 year expiry.

              • @muncan: thanks. but i know the passes will stay i am just not sure about their t&c regarding transferring passes to non family member.

    • FYI it may take a while for the points to clear - been over a month since I hit the 4k spend and still waiting for them - T&C's say up to 3 months though

      • 2nd statement kicked in and no points yet, so hoping will be in the 3rd statement.

  • Can anyone tell me what if I apply for this card as a joint application? I earn slightly under the limit but my partner and I combined earn well and truly over…

Would I still be eligible for points?

    • +1

      nope, single person application

    • Is it $75k a year minimum income?

    • You can apply as a joint application. As soon as you click Apply Now, it allows you to do a Single or Joint application.

I'm hoping to do a joint application with my partner also.

  • Damn this is the same deal they had previously. Already done Westpac and St George in the last 3 months.
Hoping for ANZ or NAB to come to the party soon. Got some spend coming up.

    • Me too. What's with these "reduced fee" deals? haha

  • Only just two weeks ago I closed this exact card that I had from sometime 12-18 months ago…
I'm assuming there's a condition that you can't have held another credit card with St George in the past 24 months??
