    • Usual T&C, only people who have not had an Amex issued card in the last 18 months are able to apply and eligible for the points. (See Full Terms & Conditions on the website)

      • thx

    • +1

unfortunately no, people without Amex in last 18months are as rare as purple unicorns these days.

      • +1

        Well call me Charlie

      • I’m a deep purple one.
        Stupid statement

  • -5

Is it just me or is anyone else finding Velocity points worthless, say compared to QF points? The rewards airfares are never discounted and the velocity store never goes on special. I converted my CC points over to Velocity last year on a promo and finding zero value.

    • +4

Haven't had any issues redeeming in F and J to Europe on Singapore in the last 12 months.

      • +3

You can fly return to Los Angeles economy for 95,000+$120 last I checked. Just gotta fly when 95% of the country doesn't like a Tuesday morning during school term.

        • +1

Why use points for that though? Every second week there is a Aus to LA flight deal, often for the $800 mark, which values your points at less than a cent each. Every time I look at using Virgin points to fly business class to LA its literally a million points. Close to useless.

          • -1

@dtpearson: No way is there an $800 deal every second week for direct flights to LA. You are dreamin.

    • +2

Last week booked 2 business to lax for this September on velocity for 95k points each, so not too bad. The devaluation of the points transferring to Singapore airlines is a pain though. They are still a bit better than Qantas for my use, but after all the latest changes its getting close.

    • +1

Opposite experience for me, lots of VA availability barely any QF. Depends on destination though, very hard for premium cabins on VA to HKG, LAX etc whereas lots domestic.

Try transferring to SQ, as Singapore has lots more availability and can also redeem for other star alliance

    • +3

I find my QF ones useless. Velocity is better for me.

    • +1

I find Velocity much better for domestic flights, QF or Singapore better for International. I usually pickup 10+ return domestic flights a year from velocity points, often at the last minute on nice friday night returning sunday night flights.

    • +2

I've found decent value in them for domestic flights during peak periods where it would cost substantially more than usual to fly, eg Easter and Christmas. The flights I take (ADL to bne) normally work around the 1c per point mark, but during those periods it's more like 1.5 to 2.

      • +1

Second this. They make QF look bloody silly domestically.

    • Move to KrisFlyer, fly with any Star Alliance partner. Plenty of seats and value on Singapore Airlines I've redeemed a couple of flights a year for the last few years no issues (including 1st class and business)

      • +1

The devaluation of Velocity against KF from 1.35 to 1.55 was a kick up the rear. But then the increase in KF points required for Business and First Class is half a nail in the coffin for me. As an example prior to 31 Dec 2018 a one way business class flight from Perth to Paris was 95k KF points which was 128.25k Velocity points. After 24th Jan 2019, the same flight is 106k KF which is 164.3k Velocity. A 28% increase in Velocity points required.

    • Domestically far better than Qantas points. Less useful overseas.

    • +1

They had a 30% off rewards sale last April. I managed to score MEL-HKG in business for 41600 points which was a steal

    • Its just you! Not to mention QF reward redemptions are by far so much worse due to higher additional fees.

  • If you dont use your free flight one year, can you use it on a family member next year? Meaning you would have 2 free flights.

Also anybody had issues claiming free flights on school holidays?

    • +1

limited to one free return flight per year. From experience as long as there is Economy Reward flights available you can book that flight

      • Thanks so I can claim one free flight and buy say 3 more tickets at the same time? Looking for a good credit card deal as daughter plays sports and they do this anywhere in Australia. Maybe it is just worth looking for the cheapest flight but I cant rely on the other budget airlines for my daughters sport.

        • +1

You will need to book the free flight then book the other 3 separate booking because booking the free flight you need to use a specific link and only lets you book that specific ticket

          • +1

@Schumi5: …or you could call Amex travel to complete the booking. No fees.

    • +1

No You must book it before anniversary date. But you can book on last week of the membership year then book the next one as soon as new membership year starts.
I lost mine as I missed the date.
I never had any issues claiming flights during holidays.

    • +1

Free flights do not accrue year to year, but you can book on day 364 for +300 days out (or whatever window VA opens bookings) . Note that it books in super saver non-flex economy, so any changes is not easy. You also do not accrue status or points from the booking from memory.

  • Has anyone checked if this previous deal counts towards having held an AMEX issued card in the last 18 months? The application process was via Westpac only.

    • Bank-issued AmEx cards don't count as an AmEx-issued card for the purpose of any AmEx promo like this. If you have the Westpac Visa+AmEx and haven't had an AmEx-issued card in the last 18 months then you qualify for this 100,000 points 🙂

      • +2

Cool, I didn’t realise we could post emojis 😁

      • Ok, thanks. I was unsure as AmEx posted the card directly to me.

  • +1

Had this card the last time there was the 100,000 points on offer. Was a fantastic card. Used these points to book a return flight to Europe for just the cost of the taxes (converted points to Kris Flyer). Can vouch for this being a great card.

  • +2

Called to cancel this card recently and got given 25k velocity points to think about it for 3 days.

    • +1

Yeah AMEX is pretty good, I did the same and they offered me 35k velocity points and $100 off annual fee. Worth it.

      • When did you call to do this? Was it recently?

My card is up for renewal next week so thinking of cancelling, funny thing is they already sent through the free flight early without the renewal annual fee.

        • +1

I did it in December and got 70k. Its a once off but worth trying.

          • @Moses: Awesome do you recall what you said? I tried previously but had no luck.

            • @Bargain Master: Well it's the first time. I've tried to cancel. I just said I didn't want to pay the annual fee this year so initially they offered me a free swap to card with a lower annual fee. I said nah I think I'll just cancel and then she said we'll what about 70,000 points, which was clearly worth the annual fee so I agreed to stay. It comes up as a 'one time bonus' - assuming it's based on how long you've had the card. Will likely cancel next year.

              • @Moses: Thanks did you just call the generic number? How long have you held the card for?

                • @Bargain Master: Just the number on the back of the card I think. I'd say 4 or 5 years I've had it

      • I cancelled in December. That would of got me to stay.

        Alas was offered nada.

    • +1

I did the same and they offered me 70,000 velocity points to stay. I stayed.

  • It often takes a few days for new deals to make it to the Amex website. I'd wait a few days until it does so that you can make an extra 30,000 through referrals.

    • Doubt this will happen as this is an exclusive offer for velocity and not amex themselves. Similar to the other targeted offers through Point Hacks where you need to use their link specifically to get the offer. But you never know .

  • What is an eligible purchase to hit the $3000 spend in 3 months?

(I've heard things like council rates are not included)

  • Anyone know what the minimum credit limit for this card is?

    • I just spoke to someone about this - there isn’t really a credit limit. He said it’s a charge card that whatever you spend each month needs to be paid off in that period. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me but that’s what I do anyway.

    • The Velocity American Express Platinum Card's minimum credit limit is $3000.

  • I just applied, got approved instantly (didn’t even have to provide payslips) and was approved for $3k credit limit which I think is the max they would give me.

Does anyone know what the interest free period is on this card each month?

    • I too wish to know this, it's a little unclear how it works. Amex require the balance to be paid off each month, and they list in T's&C's 20.74% interest.
So does the 20.74 apply from time of purchase? If so, it would be lucky to be worth using ongoing as a points card.

Edit; it seems to suggest 55 days here; https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/velocity-pla…

But that's not the link to the 100K points deal….

    • Just confirmed on the phone that the 55 days interest free period does apply to the 100K deal (Platinum card)

  • I already have an existing Velocity Frequent Flyer account with ~10k points, if I sign up to this will it add to my existing account or create an entirely new Virgin Velocity account with me?

    • Add

  • What are peoples opinions on getting this to transfer to krisflyer

    OR

wait until after the april changes and see if theres a good explorer deal for krisflyer conversion??

    • In general you get better availability on award flights by using krisflyer points. You'll probably get a good deal when they have award seats sales or monthly promotions.

  • I applied yesterday, got approved this morning after called to confirm some details, such as PR or citizen, driver license number. I think they need to verify ID.

  • Thanks - had this card previously and by using the domestic flight to Perth during school holidays makes it is great deal. I rang Amex to confirm 18 months period was up, checked my credit-score, completed application and had approval all within 15 mins!

Now to start looking for a way to convert Velocity points to flights to South Africa…

  • Is 100k velocity similar in value to 100k qantas?

    In terms of flight redemption

  • -2

Just canned this CC as the rewards points per spend are about to drop significantly..not that it will matter to some.

    • So from 1.5 points per $ to 1.25 points per $ in April 2019 - I still can't see a card out there that gets better than 1.25 points per dollar spent.
Points Hacks advice is to hold on to this velocity branded card as it still represents good points earning value.
      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/amex-changes-apr-2019/

  • I have to renew my card in a month, everytime I've cancelled in the past they haven't offered me anything lol

I'll see what happens, I'd definitely take 70k points to renew it

  • -1

good offer but total 9k spent within first 3 months is a bit too much for me

    • +1

From what I can make out it's 3k across the 3 months, not 3k each month.

Offer only available to new American Express Card Members who apply for the American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card online by 18 February 2019, are approved and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases on their new Card in the first 3 months from the Card approval date.

Signed up to this deal last week and I've been pleasantly surprised how many places accept AMEX.

  • +4

I got this offer last year and in May 2018 booked our first ever Singapore Airlines Suites/First Class flight for April 2019. 70 days to go and can't wait!

This is before all the problems with devaluations kicked in.

    • How many points did that take?

      • +1

It took 80,000 KrisFlyer miles per person from Sydney to Singapore which was 108,000 Velocity points at the time.

The same redemption is now 85,000 Krisflyer miles which converts from 131,750 Velocity points.

        • Thanks for the reply. How was the Singapore Airlines first class experience?

  • Got my card for a week now anyone know when they send out the lounge passes?

    • +1

They dont send out the passes, they are automatically linked to your velocity account. When you arrive at the virgin lounge just tell them you have 2 passes on your account. You can also seem them when you login to your account under "MY BENEFITS"

  • Time for a new Amex. This or wait for a better deal?

    • Personally I am waiting, I try to avoid the annual fee, though I have to say 100k points is very tempting

    • This is a pretty good bonus for virgin points. qantas often has similar 100k.

But the question will be what the new bonus's after the amex devaluation occurs. we might be surprised??

  • Mannnnnnnnnnnnnn I got this like 2 months ago for only 90,000 :(

  • Can anyone comment on availability of the free flights? I've got a trip planned from MEL - SYD during Easter long weekend, what are the chances of being able to book the free flight? Thanks.
