Nissan Micra Alternator

Hi guys, I bought a Nissan micra 1.2 automatic 2011 a couple of years ago with about 63000 kms. Currently odometer has about 68000 as I don’t drive it much. Yesterday car showed the battery light so we took to mechanics. He said that needs new alternator and it will cost $600. Is that a reasonable cost? Thanks

If that is supplied and fitted, it seems about right. Depends on what brand of alternator and if it’s a rewind or a brand new. Depends if it’s genuine Nissan or not. Maybe 1 to 2 hours labour if they are slow.

InB4: I can buy that alternative for $20 off eBay and me mate would fit it for a slab…

Used one on eBay for $100 delivered. Held on with a couple of bolts. Easy swap out.

You could buy the part and then airtasker it for $50. (if you're not confident in doing it. but it is damn easy. google "how to replace alternator" - youtube

$100 used one if you're gunna keep the car another 2 years or so.
If you're gunna keep a good car get the new alternator.
I've changed so many alts and starter motors and its such a hassle to do that job again a few years later when the s/h part also dies.

In saying that, $600 sounds like a LOT for that job?

  • Thank you.

  • wait till your car can't start

    then jump start it

wait till your car can't start

then only confirm replace the alternator

or get auto-electrician to check whether the alternator is charging the battery

  • Have you checked the battery voltage? Can you measure the voltage while the car is running?

Need to measure amps from an alternator, volts won’t tell you if it’s charging enough.

      • Isn’t that what the light on the dash does? Tells you the charge current is low. It isn’t a battery voltage light.

        • Volts will turn the light off, amps will fill the battery. Sure if the alternator is totally screwed it wont make 12v, but if the battery is going flat with no current draw then is the alternator pushing current(amps)?

          • @[Deactivated]: Ok, so the battery light does work on voltage, but it doesn’t relate to battery voltage. The light is an indicator of the charging system is working, or when it is on, the alternator needs attention, not the battery. Jump start a car with a dud battery but working alternator and the light will not come on while he engine keeps running.

It really should be a picture of the alternator not the battery, it that would be more difficult to decipher.

    • This is not a foolproof test either, as I found out last month.
My battery always read enough volts, alt charging fine, battery had green light, clean terminals,
needed a proper battery tester to report that one cell was dead.
And this would set off my dash light often.

      • Each cell is 2v nominal and there are 6 cells in series for a total of 12v If one cell was proper dead the battery would have read 2-3v lower?

      • You are probably referring to a load tester which simulates a short circuit (for want of a better phrase) and measures that peak potential against the batteries stated capacity (cold cranking amps or CCA). So yes, you may have 12.6v, charging at 14v and 60a but only 125CCA in a 400CCA battery. That wouldn’t even start a lawn mower.

  • I wouldn't reccomend measuring amps unless you have a clamp meter. Plus capacity (amp hours) is directly related to voltage. Either way its guaranteed the car will also need a new battery if the alternator is dead so I'd start there.

  • Thanks guys. All your feedback has been appreciated
