Men's Wallet Recommendation

Hi all,
Looking to get a new wallet and the minimalist wallet has caught my eye.

Hoping to get some advice as the problem I have is I have a lot of cards in my wallet

  1. Personal credit card (different bank)
  2. Work credit card (different bank)
  3. Bank debit card (different bank to withdraw money from ATM)
  4. Medicare card
  5. Driver's license
  6. Private health insurance
  7. Student card
  8. Flybuys card
  9. Woolworths Rewards card
  10. Qantas card
  11. EB games card

I find that cards 1 to 5 are must haves. Private health insurance due to emergencies in case in accident or whatever will need health insurance details.

So not sure how minimalist wallet carriers can carry so little cards. And the other cards for points (flybuys, woolworths, qantas, eb games)I find is useful to carry in case I make spontaneous or last minute unplanned purchases, like filling up petrol, or unplanned visit to the supermarket or EB games. EB games has no app for Android I believe, and can't seem to find flybuys / woolworths app either

Put all reward cards on phone.
    Woolworths https://www.woolworthsrewards.com.au/digital-wallet-login.ht…

Or use stocard app. Some stores may not have good scanners, need to test.

Even then I still currently have 10 in this wallet

I carry 1 of my Credit Cards in a minimalist wallet, all my other CC , Debit Card, and Rewards Card live in my Wallet App on my iPhone. I use ApplePay for basically everything.

The only other cards I physically carry are my Drivers License and Medicare Card.

So total number of plastic cards in my Wallet is three.

Thanks John, the App is now on my Phone, and the Medicare card is now in my desk drawer :)

      • Might just want to be aware of the permissions you need to give the Medicare app:

        Identity
        find accounts on the device
        add or remove accounts

        Calendar
read calendar events plus confidential information
add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owners' knowledge

        Contacts
        find accounts on the device

        Location
        approximate location (network-based)
        precise location (GPS and network-based)

        Phone
        read phone status and identity

        Photos / Media / Files
read the contents of your USB storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

        Storage
read the contents of your USB storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

        Camera
        take pictures and videos

        Wi-Fi connection information
        view Wi-Fi connections

        Device ID & call information
        read phone status and identity

        Other
        view network connections
        create accounts and set passwords
        full network access
        read Google service configuration

I was about to install, but having second thoughts now…

        • Up to you. Pretty standard things for almost all apps these days though?

          Google sees all anyway…

if your with commonwealth bank. their banking app has a tab where u can scan or enter all your rewards cards and also things like medicare and insurance cards onto it so u dont need to carry them around

How did you get 4 drivers licenses and 3 Medicare cards? Are you pulling some sort of scam?

  • +1

Most of my cards are stored on my phone etc like others, but for the few that I carry I use a Secrid wallet.

  • I had a problem with chunky wallets. I ended up using a Bellroy hide and seek and am now using a Bellroy passport wallet. They're wide enough so two cards can be side by side so the overall thickness is reduced.

The Bellroy Slim Sleeve. Holds 12 cards no worries. I've had mine for years and it still looks good.

  • I have 7 cards in a card holder wallet. DL, 2x CC, 2x Work security building passes, PHI and Opal.

Get the Medicare app to get rid of your Medicare card (Or just take a photo or note the number down). 7 to 10 can go on CBA or storcard app if they have barcodes.

Bellroy note sleeve and stocard is my go to combo. Only carry DL, CC, Medicare,

  • Stocard.

Photograph the cards like Medicare and your licence and store them also on stocard.

You need the physical flybuys card (or similar) to use the dollars /points

    • You need the physical flybuys card (or similar) to use the dollars /points

No you don't. Or are you saying because sometimes your phone doesn't scan?

      • Collecting points, no. Redeeming flybuys dollars requires the physical flybuys card.

        • Hmmm, why is that? A physical barcode scans the same as a phone image barcode?

Are you talking about the $10 off your shop? Maybe I'll test one day.

          • @John Kimble: To collect points, stocard works fine.

Once you have dollars on the card to use, then you need the physical card (you swipe it) and a PIN (that you choose).

            • @oscargamer: I've never had to swipe and enter a PIN for my flybuys card (didn't even know it had one) to redeem. I just scan my flybuys barcode and it asks me if I want $10 off my shop at the pay stage. I've paid 1 cent before.

But then I use a Coles Mastercard, maybe thats why…

              • @John Kimble:

But then I use a Coles Mastercard, maybe thats why…

I was going to ask whether you had a Coles Financial Product; this confirms it.

                • @kerfuffle: I still don't understand how the register would know though. I scan the flybuys barcode before I scan any groceries and it says "your flybuys card has been accepted" (or similar) and then when I press "finish and pay" it asks if I want $10 off. I say yes, then it reduces the total and asks how I want to pay. I dont have to pay with my Coles MC. could pay cash if I wanted to. There is no step thats asks to swipe and enter the PIN for my flybuys card.

                  • @John Kimble: Probably different beginning of barcodes e.g. barcodes starting with 23 are normal flybuys whereas barcodes starting with 45 are those attached to a Coles MasterCard

Just like how the register won't let you use flybuys dollars to buy gift cards unless they're attached to a Coles Financial Product

                    • +2

@kerfuffle: If you have the Coles MC you can just use the barcode to get $10 off your shop.

If you want to redeem more points so you can get $20, $30, $40, etc. off your shop you have to redeem to the Flybuys card and then swipe that at the reg.

@Seraphin7: Ohhhh, ok, that makes sense…ypu learn something new every day…

                    • @kerfuffle: Mine starts with 27 and I had it years before I got a Coles MC, but I linked it once I got it.

Oh well, still a mystery to me.

                      • @John Kimble: Those numbers are just made up on the spot. FWIW, mine also starts with 27.

Perhaps that’s a question for flybuys to answer …

                        • @kerfuffle: Pretty close!

                          • @John Kimble: The card is linked to an account - I think it'd be a trivial check on the backend to then see if the account is linked to a Coles financial product…

  • Check out the range at Leather Land https://www.leatherland.com.au/men/wallets/. They have a great range of wallets and the customer service is excellent. They also have an eBay store.

  • +1 to Stocard to at least get rid of a few of those cards. 7-10 are definitely supported, and private health can probably go in as well.

Once you do that you are down to ~6 cards, so just about any normal wallet should be fine.

+Bellroy slim sleeve. Was hesitant because of the hefty price tag but definitely worth it.

Bellroy has really nice slim/minimalist wallets.

I use Key Ring for all my cards like Medicare, FlyBuys, memberships, Health Insurance, etc, etc.

Google Pay for when I want to buy something.

No need to carry anything other than the phone.

  • I had a Rip Curl simple leather wallet, got it as a gift for my 18th, the dog chewed it up last month, I'm 33.
It held up tremendously all those years so I bought this last week, https://www.ripcurl.com.au/mens/equipment/wallets/handcrafte… $24 + shipping at the moment. Very simple, 1mm thick leather throughout. Will suit your 5 must have cards. I have 5 too, and a key. I'm minimalist with my keys, Car, Garage and Work only on the keychain. Home is a key in the wallet.

  • For me, bellroy has a hefty price tag which is hard to justify.

A quality option I found was Karakoram2, their RFID wallets are quite nice. I got the slim line.

      +1 for Karakoram2 wallets.
I got one on Xmas and quite happy with it.
      Well made and slim.

  • Another vote for Karakoram2, superb quality and cheaper than Bellroy. I got a Sublime wallet and it is nice and slim. https://karakoram2.com.au/products/sublime-mens-wallet
