I am using Australian Microsoft Account. And I purchased the Gold edition this arvo using my Debit Master card from common bank successfully (A$49.51).

If you are interested in (since Xbox AU store roughly doubles the price), here's the step that might help you:

  1. purchase Xbox US gift cards in Amazon US (amazon.com). For example, what I purchased were:
    US$10: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F4CEHNK/
    US$25: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F4CF39C/
    in total US$35
using my debit master card from common bank, WITH AN AMERICAN DELIVERY ADDRESS.
  2. Redeem those digital codes in Xbox US Store.
  3. Purchase the game using account balance in Xbox US Store.
  4. Turn on XBOX, and you are able to install that without any further operations (i.e. no need to reboot or whatsoever).

Note: the balance in XBOX US Store is not usable in AU Store

Have the US address be in a state with no sales tax like Oregon.

~$34.31 AU for gold edition if bought from the Brazil Xbox store.
    .
~$18.90 AU for gold edition if bought from the Argentinian store. There can be some issues with redeeming gift cards for the first time on the Argentinian store though.

Use Xbox store checker site to see which country is currently cheapest

Does anyone know if ever the US has sales on the gift cards at all?

Similar to how WW have discounts on the gift cards but USD ones?

  •

Just remember to use a card with no international transaction fees to maximise savings :)

Nice deal, thanks! I just got the Gold Edition through the US store using Microsoft Rewards points, it looks like it worked, here's hoping they don't ban my account :P

    •

I did some research on account banning.

It seems Microsoft has only banned accounts purchasing game in low-price (original prices are very low, e.g. some South American countries) regions.

So, it should be quite safe buying games in US store :P

All you need to do is create a US Paypal account and link it to your Aussie credit card. Then switch to the US region on your Xbox, and pay with Paypal. No VPN's required. Switch back to Australia as soon as you have paid and continue the download. Easy peasy. I've been doing it this way for years.
