              • @8200: I’m always turned off by any car with a CVT though, what are they like in the Eclipse Cross?

No manual option either, not that many people these days would buy one.

                • @jwh: Have not driven this new model, but or ex Lancer had a CVT i did not find any issue with it

Smooth "changes", no shift shock, noise or jolts

U need to test drive see if it suits your needs

    • When looking at safety ratings, find out when the car was tested/rated.

My current daily was tested in 2005 and scored 5 stars. One of the first in its segment (if not the first). In 2019, it would barely get 1.

ANCAP/Euro NCAP has been ratcheting up the difficulty each year. We're finally at a point in 2019 that you will start to see cars not achieving 5 stars as a default (and thus some manufacturers revolting and not supplying a test mule to ANCAP).

Cliff notes: the more recent the test, the harder the test has become.

As an aside, it might be my height, but the eclipse cross has some serious ergonomic issues for me. I have trouble with the power window switches etc..

      Check out the Hyundai Kona.

      • Yeah the ANCAP safety ratings have definitely changed. The new kia Cerato with safety pack score a 5 I think, hence why I want all those safety features in a small SUV. I don't think the Hyundai kona has all those safety features. I love the look of the kona, but for the price, it doesn't have enough features for me.

        • Kona has a safety pack variant in the lower grades.

Damnit, I just bought the Tesla a few days ago!

Nobody pays a full price for a Renault, especially the one that is not designed and made in Europe. Even then, why would you buy a Renault when Nissan equivalents are cheaper and offer better financial options.

    • Paying for debt in a car is a terrible idea if you value your money.

      • +1

This comment comes up quite a bit, and when you do the maths, it makes sense.

But who has 40k under their mattress ready to purchase a car? People need cars to get to work, and live etc (if you're not living in the CBD). So although it isn't ideal to take out a loan to purchase a depreciating asset, if it means you can go to work, and use the car it is better than not having the car in the first place, and being jobless.

        • -1

if it means you can go to work, and use the car it is better than not having the car in the first place, and being jobless.

But it's trivial to buy a car for less than a tenth of that price that will do the exact same job. I've not had a brand new car since I left a job that have me a company car nearly twenty years ago. It's nice having a new, but it gave me nothing that a 5 or 10 year old Toyota doesn't.

          • +1

@banana365: For less, sure. But if you exaggerate ("a tenth") then people will argue with you.

The reason I have a $2k car and a newer $15k car (both second hand) is because the safety features are different and I won't risk my family. If I'd bought a second car for $2k and someone died I'd never forgive myself

            • @justtoreply:

For less, sure. But if you exaggerate ("a tenth") then people will argue with you.

How on earth can you say that I exaggerate then go on to say that you have a car for less than a twentieth of the posted car's price?

              • @banana365: I actually don't understand your question. My comment has no need to refer to the car in the OP. It merely demonstrates why you'd pay more than the minimum. Your valuation of $4299 buys you a car with inadequate safety features, that's all that my point is.

Sorry that my second car is worth $2000 instead of $4299 and the lack of clarity this causes.

            • @justtoreply: This a million times over. It might be more financially prudent to drive a $2k car, but if you are seriously injured in a prang (or worse, a family member is) then what good is money if you can't walk.

Most brand new cars these days, even the 20k ones, have some level of crash avoidance technology. My wifes car cost $30k as a demo (which is 3 years old now and still worth ~75% of what we paid.. unlike this renault ;) has autonomous braking forward and reverse, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist plus the passive safety tech like 7 airbags etc..

You don't even need to spend 30k, 15k gets you an 18 month old ex fleet Hyundai i30 with a safety pack with 3.5 years warranty left

          • -1

@banana365: Some people want a new car - like people want new clothes.

Do you do your shopping at the charity stores? After all - a shirt from Myer does the same job as a $2 shirt from st vinnies…

Just let people do what they want

            • @flashi007: Follow the thread. This was about the ability to afford a car being the make or break factor in being able to have a job, not personal taste or safety factors.

      • Not if you have investments that are returning higher than the interest on the debt.

    • When we bought ours (start of 17) Nissan’s xtrail were way more expensive, in purchase price ( about $6k) and servicing (koleos was free 3 yrs services but even not free was fixed $299 per year, Nissan told me every 6 months) and had less warranty (Koleos 5+2extra vs 3yrs for Nissan)

  • +3

Thanks OP, bought 1 to tow my Tesla back from the dealership - need to keep the km's down on that badboy u know

    • +1

      Protecting resale value?

  • +4

    Thanks OP, bought 10.

    • -4

I’m not sure whether you’re serious or not, but it’s this kind of behaviour that’s ruining OzBargain.

  • Is this 7 seater?

    • No, Renault opted to maximise 2nd row seat space at the cost of offering a 7 seat variant at all.

      • +1

Shame. 7 seats is the only reason I'd buy anything larger than a sedan. But I'm aware I'm in the minority that doesn't think having 1 or 2 kids justifies a massive car.

  • In terms of pure discount and nothing else, this is 8% off vs Tesla Model S/X at 33% off. A real OZbargainer would know which one to buy.

  • Has this been approved by Scotty Kilmer?

    • +2

      Rev up your engines!

  • Is that $3000 off the sticker price? Surely you'd be able to get more than that from 5 minutes of haggling? I guess this deal sets a better starting point for negotiation…

Does anyone on this site actually just walk up and pay sticker price?

  • +4

No cashrewards, so no go for me again.

  • +2

As a previous owner of Renault vehicles, do not get one if you do not intend to keep this till it ends up in the junk yard. These things sell for peanuts second hand and depreciate way more than other makes.

  • +2

This car is pretty poorly built. I’ve got late 2017 model and it’s just got many design flaws and the sealing foam is already lifting off under the windscreen. I regret the purchase hope you guys don’t go through what I did

    • +1

Build integrity does not seem to bother many these days, more into star ratings and included gadgets.

      • +2

It’s such a shame to be honest. This is why I wished to warn people against it

  • If I buy do I have to pay In $10's ?

  • Sounds like a bargain compared to the price back in the country! : KOLEOS
    Intens dCi 175 X-Tronic
    PRIX TOTAL
    40 150 €

  • +1

Damn, could've gotten 4 of these if I hadn't bought the Tesla from the other deal

  • +2

Thanks OP, just in time for my son's 16th birthday. He will love to learn to drive in one of these beauties.

    • +2

At least he won't be in danger of catching any stds.

  • +2

Ill give you guys a heads up - my colleague at work, somebody hit her from behind, went insurance to fix, took Renault almost 4 months to import the goods and repair.

Car got hit November 2018, received car early March 2019.

    • Not bad, 4 months with no car maintenance costs on the rental car I'd hope she was getting around in for all that time?

    • I took Obrien 3 months to fix my cracked windscreen. Windscreen had to come from France ffs. Other than that great car. Very smooth. I don't care about resale as I drive my cars for many many years.

  • LOL "Renault"

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overpriced korean nonsense, spend another $7k and buy a generation vastly superior LEXUS UX

    • +1

Nah, keep the $7k extra, a Toyota Kluger will do the same price but with extra 2 seats to spare.

      • Or another American-built SUV, GMC/Holden Acadia.

        • Kluger, Nah, Cx9 all the way. Hard to beat side by side against the Kluger.

  • Thanks, bought 2 with the money saved from the tesla

  • +1

My god, please don't spend your hard earned money on a renault.
This thing will be worth $10K-15K in 3 years.
    Absolute trash vehicle.
Source: I used to sell cars and have did trade in appraisals on these things for years.
The worst cars to try and try and trade in/sell?
    Rennault
    Fiat
    Citroen (omg lol soooo terrible)
    Smartcar

    • I bet people took the news well too when you made them an offer on the trade haha

      • +2

lol the citroen's were the best. a 4 year old citroen, costing 48K brand new, getting trade offers for $5k and $6K as the best trade in offers after calling every single wholesaler in town.
It's not like they are made poorly, but they are converted poorly and can't handle Australian conditions. Literally everything melts.

        • Which ones usually trade well?

          • @BarginGrabber: the big name asian brands.
Toyota, Hyundai, Honda etc… Kia's are good too.

Mercs and Beemers aren't great, not because they're shit, but because the parts are expensive.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Mazda seems to hold up well to, if the secondhand market on them is anything to go by.

              • @2023: yes forgot to mention Mazda, they are excellent too.

  • nissan jatco cvt transmissions in these crap out in under 50k kms. class action in usa forced nissan to increase the warranty on the trans from 5 years to 10 years. they did not offer the same here. some of these koleos's, including the x trails, are on their 3rd transmissions.

    • +1

earlier versions, yes were crap, but the newer gen CVTs by Nissan\Jatcon are very well made.

Our family car is a 2016 base model Xtrail and has just done 70,000km with only the standard servicing and brakes carried out. Mum drives a 2013 Pulsar, over 100,000Kms on same transmission.

      • Yep, not ALL, Nissan, Renault/French cars are lemons or have the worse of everything.
I am in the market for a new car and it's scary to read the reviews on some of the cars we have and consequently… had on our list. Some the dealerships do the brands they sell no favours also with the way they treat customers and or potential customers.
        Some cars we had in mind;
Jag-F Type… Ok Car, Crappy support with issues, should you have any from JLR. (people have reported poor finish interiors and poor paint jobs at times), interested as they have the entry level prestige at 67K drive away with 5 year servicing included.
Merc- C Class or GLC- Same, entry-level Merc. deems entry level support from Merc, same from BMW, not too sure about Audi (Google John Cadogan Merc customer report on a GLA…).
Porsche Macan, solid car, but almost bare bones inclusions when compared to Mazda Cx9 Azami model.

Remind me, Why are we paying premium prices for average inclusions? … Badge! Show offs aren't we, no, It means we've made it, we matter, we is important!

The only one that seems to be the no-brainer trouble free option is the impressive Mazda CX9 or even CX8, very well reviewed etc, and the 2019 update has 'proper' safety tech that you have to pay over 10K in 'packs' if you want the equivalent from Merc, BMW, Land Rover, Jag, Porsche etc.
Even the base model sport has inclusions the luxury brands don't.
Did you know you have to pay extra for Apple car play and android what ever in the Premium brands.

        • Android Auto = android what ever.

  • What? $42,990 for a Renault Koleos?!

    IT IS a bargain against X3 & Q5! :)
