        • I assume you're not referring to FTA TV (7/9/10 etc) because that stuff is AWFUL, I'd take streaming any day of the week.

Granted I don't have antennas on any of my TVs and haven't for years, but occasionally pulling one out for Bathurst or something, it looks like I'm watching a 240p YouTube stream

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I'm talking Foxtel, but I'd still prefer watching on 7HD over streaming it online

          • @[Deactivated]: I've got normal Foxtel and Foxtel Now, the normal Foxtel quality is definitely superior at least it was before xmas when i last compared but Foxtel now is still pretty good.

I think Foxtel now live maxes out at 720p (1080p for some ondemand, not live), where as normal Foxtel is 1080i (except 4k channel for satellite). Kayo however i believe lets you stream a lot of stuff live in 1080p, if so, it should be really good. Curious how that compares to normal Foxtel HD!!!

            • +2

@Xizor: I have the same experience, Kayo over apple TV, most motor racing and cricket is 1080p pixel perfect HD, no buffering or streaming issues whatsoever, and that's over wifi!

      • +2

I had an extended nbn outage on Sunday night. It's times like that I am glad my television doesn't come from the internet.

      • You are pretty lucky. I've had buffering and quality issues with Foxtel Go and Kayo at different times but most of the time it is fine.

Happy to pay $39 per month for Foxtel basic + sport + HD compared to $25 per month for Kayo. Overall, more choice and better reliability for the extra $14 per month. If it was full price, probably a different story.

    • +21

      Appreciate your feedback, Rupert

    • +9

100% this, I've used Kayo for the past 4-5 months for NBA and Cricket on a Telstra TV2 and the buffering delay (NBN 50) and inability to skip through replays of games quickly swayed me back. Plus it always started out in SD before changing to HD, then there is navigating into an app to watch something and slowly going between live broadcasts, I just want push and play. For $10 a week (I got the same deal as Danstar) having live access to sport which doesn't leech off your connection of which I'm lucky to have NBN, but other people are vastly more affected, is great. The inclusion of FTA (in WA now) into the box with recording is great and contributing towards the broadcast rights for everything I watch - AFL, NRL, F1, MotoGP, NBA, Cricket and more is pretty damn fair - I feel I get a lot for my tenner a week.. Each to their own, I prefer the Foxtel box solution but let's not try piss over each other, whatever works for you works, for me the cost isn't that much above the no frills online solution of Kayo so you're paying a slight premium for some pretty obvious reasons and advantages - but Kayo is a cheaper gateway to the same (sports) content.

Can't wait to get a 4k tv now (waiting for the Samsung Q90 to be released) for the F1, that will be unreal.

      • +4

I'm in the same boat as you I find having an IQ4 box is a better experience for me. The 4K sports coverage this year will be fantastic. I can't wait to see all the F1 races in 4K.

        • +1

Mate I'd love to hear some feedback on how this weekend goes. From all reports the Sky 4k coverage last year was the ducks, I'm waiting for the new Samsung Q series which is killing me - hopefully get it in time for Monaco that should be spectacular, and a Ricciardo chance hopefully.

          • @RickoWest: I have an LG OLED and it is the best TV hands down. Get an OLED! I will be at the F1 this weekend soi will not be able to see the coverage but I'm sure it will be awesome.

          • @RickoWest: The 4K channel now is awesome. Watched a bit of cricket (which I never would've before) and they have random documentaries and movies in 4K too which are great quality

      • Yep, my parents have been on Foxtel for 20+ years and I'm used to the box. If I can get the $39 deal they are on with sport at my new rental next month, I will.

Also waiting for the Q90….. dunno if I should go for OLED 2019 now or wait. Was gung-ho about OLED and have two OLED tablets but worried about a bright lounge room.

      • Well said, I think some also disregard that some people are just not interested in using online services for watching content or are not savvy enough with the technology in some cases. For some, being able to flick your tv on to instantly watch is more motivating.

    • Did you get the 4K box when you signed up? I've still got the IQ3 and whenever I call/chat to request the new box they want to slug $125 for it…

      • I got a free upgraded. I just called and asked for the IQ4 as i wanted the 4K channels.

      • I signed up new… I hated the iq3 and the bluetooth remote. It is 100x better now

      • I had Foxtel calling me repeatedly to "offer" me an IQ4, for the low low price of $100.

I'll stick with my IQ2 until the box dies and they have to replace it.

    • +2

I totally agree, people should go for whatever suits their needs but Foxtel still serves a purpose and I love it.

No need to worry about streaming and casting to a TV in some way, no loss in quality, no delay, all the free to air channels in HD, ability to record stuff and watch it later etc.

For me Foxtel is better value.

    • This was my thing, trialed Kayo and liked it, called up to cancel foxtel but they offered me the same deal as you with an upgrade to the IQ4 box for free, so I took it, mainly I like that Foxtel is very rarely down, I have optus cable and it has gone down a few times.

  • +1

Just bum off a family member's Foxtel account (they get 2 additional free Foxtel Go logins) or sign up for Kayo.

    • tell me more…

    • +1

Don't tell too many people, Foxtel know people do this, but can't really stop it unless they remove multi-room ;)

  • +5

Kayo is rubbish, the delay is ridiculous for live sport, also drops sound, crashes, and i have 100/40 FTTH.

    • +2

Cool. Works fine on my 77 FTTN.

      What device are you using?

      • +1

APTV4K, its well known on forums

    • I had occasional drops in quality, however the delay between kayo and fox was ~20s? I forgot since I tested it a while ago, but it wasn't too bad in my experience

      • +1

When I tested latency on Kayo and 7HD during the first test in December using a CC Ultra and the multi-view feature on my TV the delay was around 3-5 seconds. I'd argue that Kayo has improved considerably since then and the addition of the (unofficial) Kodi app and Android TV app has made it even better

Will be interesting to see what it is like when the footy starts next week

    • Had no drops or crashes on 50 HFC. Delay is variable, nature of streaming sports I think.

  • Bonus 32" Tv for sign up online too.

  • +1

    Im confused with their pricing…..
Movies + Drama + Entertainment + HD is listed as $59* / month and SAVE $478.90* with tech install
Sport + Drama + Entertainment + HD is listed as $58* / month and SAVE $598.90* with tech install

How does $1 a month (I assume tech install would be the same cost, no matter what package you choose) equate to $120 difference in savings?
Or are they taking the savings off the higher plan due to sport, etc being involved?

In Laws need to move off Optus Foxtel as NBN is coming, so looking at their options to get similar or same channels as now.

    • Because it's save* not save.

Down below it probably says "*for headline grabbing only, no actual savings supplied"

    • Sport is $10 more expensive than Movies.
Since Foxtel lost Europe Champion league and EPL outrights to Optus, as for a soccer fan, the value dropped more than $10.
Optus also has the exclusive outright of euro cup and world cup.

    • You can just get a splitter if their NBN is HFC

  • +2

I recently dumped Foxtel after years of having it. I'm used to them throwing great deals at you to stay, but this time I was happy to just completely let it go. Found out the last, most desperate offer they give you is $2.50 a week for basic package plus some other channels thrown in, and they give you some free movies to go with it. I'm guessing that's the "Netflix beater" they hold in reserve.

    • This is really interesting, and helpful. Do you know if they offered you any cheap packages on your way out that also included sport?

      • They didn't offer me anything with sport but I think that's because I didn't have the sport package in the first place - You might be able to get something along these lines though if you pushed it?

        • Thanks for the info!!

      • I just cancelled yesterday but got offered basically the same one as in this thread + docos before they finally let me go. They even wanted me to switch the whole account to friend or family at the same price.

  • +7

    FYI:

That deal looks to still be active even though it's marked as Expired ( i just tested it out)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/424102

$39 per month for Sports HD + Basic package & IQ4

    • Yep work collegue got this deal last month, but he did need to pay $25 or so for installation

    • Only works for new customers that deal (for me anyway).
My $39/month package ran out last month (Entertainment + Sport + HD). I rang up foxtel disconnections this morning and they reinstated the same $39/month plan (on 12 month plan)

      • So frustrating. I'm in the same boat, but Foxtel refused to offer me the same deal again. The whirlpool foxtel bargaining thread shows similar stories. Some people get the deal, others not! I'll try again soon.

        • Ring upand say you’re going to disconnect, but be firm that you want to disconnect
They know lots of people just ring up to say that to get a better deal and usually cave

          • @Danstar: Yep be firm. And if it doesn't work then disconnect……. Then become a new member with the above compare the market deal. Worth it for the $30/month saving

        • +1

Just to follow up. I did try again and they offered me the deal straight away. No begging!

  • -4

Honestly have f*** all time to watch the shit on foxtel the only reason i would consider it is because of Sport but thanks to Kayo i just basically do-da free trail job

gone are the days when you could jump on pirate bay without a VPN and download what you want 'cough* GOT'

    • +3

That extra click to turn on the VPN is ever so strenuous.

    • How have you not heard of VPN's?
Maybe you have but somehow to you such an easy step is a daunting task?

      • I prob should clarify i have a VPN but downloading takes 10 times longer (keep in mind my area doesnt have NBN)

        • Mate, you're better off not being on NBN. I don't have home internet because NBN is garbage and I just have a 90GB mobile data plan that I hot spot at home. With VPN the speeds will be slow if you connect through a tunnel far away. The VPN I use has Sydney and Melbourne tunnels. No speed issues

  • +1

Alternatively if you're not into Sports, you can get Drama + Entertainment + Movies + Docos + HD $59/month (Save $30/month)

    • I don't see docos included in this option. Am I missing something?

  • +2

Anyone know what the cheapest way to get the new Game of thrones (legit) will be?

    • +1

I would just bite the bullet and sign up for foxtel. If you want to look at foxtel go, that's an option but a lot of people have complained about issues with that for the last few years at peak GoT time.

I add the drama pack for GoT time and then remove it when it's off again. Will be removing it for good once GoT is finished this year.

    • +3

      VPN+Hulu+HBO Add-on

Get a superior streaming service to Netflix (more big name content) + Game Of Thrones as it airs in USA.

      Hulu $5.99 US
      HBO Add-on $14.99 US

I am currently getting Hulu for $0.99 per month. You can search around the net for codes or can just luck out with a special offer on signup.

(I had been browsing the site when it just popped up and said, would you like to take advantage of special offer $0.99 for 12 months? So I did).

(Otherwise I believe you could also get it as part of Foxtel Now.. but with a lot less total content than Hulu+HBO for $25 AUD per month).

      • Can you tell me mate if there are subtitles/closed captions for live TV on Hulu? E.g. are the GoT episodes likely to have English subs as they air?

        • Ah can give you a bit more info but there are some things I haven't tried yet.

Everything stream anytime has English subs, that is all I subscribe to at present. I assume the HBO Add-on works the same, but am intending to try it when GoT is on, I haven't yet. I also haven't tried their live TV service which gives you access to additional channels at additional cost.

I am pretty sure if anywhere has subtitles on Game Of Thrones as it airs Hulu would too.

    • +1

      Probably Foxtel Now $15pm

  • Seems like the best Foxtel deal I've ever seen to meet my needs. Couple issues, free
32" Hisense sounds okay but at that size you'd lick it and stick in to your eye ball. Is the 32" Hisense 4K? Is it the entertainment pack or the entertain Plus pack? I'd only want this to watch NRL, A-League, Socceroo games, trash WWE, Game of Thrones and news South Park all in HD. And I can hot spot my Optus phone to the telstra box for unmetered Netflix? And the IQ can smart record series as a once off setup?

If yes to all of the above I'm jumping on this.

  • I got foxtel now for free through my telstra NBN, and holy crap is it bad. Firstly, it has ads (for a paid streaming service) but more egregious than this is the fact that their ads play on repeat constantly when selecting a show with the show crashing out and forcing you to watch another ad. Have had to do this multiple times before the show will play. It comes across as a bug, but I get the feeling it's done on purpose. I would never pay them for such a crap service. They deserve to die and likely will in the next few years.

    • thanks for reminding me that I may just have it via my phone plan…. will have to suss out before GOT time

    • Sounds weird. I run it sideloaded on an nvidia shield tv and vodafonetv both work with no real problems.

  • My parents have the iq1 box with drama/doco and entertainment pack for $69 on their 4k telly I tell them they're crazy

    • +2

Baby boomers? Foxtels target audience as VPNs and torrenting is just way too complicated for people who when at your age could buy a house for the price of what a new commodore is today

  • Just rang up and got my package changed. Thanks for the savings OP

  • No 32 TVs left I think. can't see it on website

  • Got rid of foxtel about 8 years ago and the only thing I missed was the NRL

Ditched Stan and Netflix as well

Netflix was great when we had access to the rest of the world's library but turned to shit when that was no more

  • I've been looking for a way to stream GoT S8 coming up soon and was interested in this, however I'm moving home in a month or two so just wanted the online / app component.
Called up and was advised the following:

No way to separate the online/app component, a box install is always required
He can organise to waive the cost for moving/relocating when i move house in a couple months
He can reduce the term to 6 months instead of 12 months
The promotion has been running for a week already( ? ) so no not going to be any luck with the Free TVs
All of this on the premise i sign up today of course.

    • +1

Foxtel Now had every episode of Season 7 on the day of release and only cost $15 a month, online/app only

I'm assuming they'll have the same with Season 8

      • Eh… I will have to look for this. Thanks for letting me know!

      • I'll just download season 8 and then buy it on blu ray when it gets released (No contract and I get to keep my copy of the whole season afterwards)

  • +2

Anyone who only wants Sports in HD get Kayo and a Chromecast Ultra, you will not be disappointed.

    • If you watch beInSports in ipad through foxtel account, u can pick up whatever game u want to watch at the same playing time, which means u can always watch the team u support. At least I know that Optus Fetch/beInSports does not support this feature.
Do u know if beInSports/Kayo supports this feature?

    • Out of interest, why chromecast over a HDMI cable? I know there's a cable there, but is there any other benefit?

    • Or a Xiaomi Mi TVBox for possibly cheaper than a Chromcast Ultra (as it has Ultra incl within it). That way you could use it or even use Kayo from within Kodi. Better bang for buck I would think.

  • Would jump on this deal but a member of the house watches Lifestyle Home and Lifestyle Food religiously, which annoyingly are part of the 'Entertainment Plus' pack. Any flexibility with this Fox offer to remove the Drama pack and just add the Ent+? Or keep the Drama pack and just tack on the extra packs as required? (Would still be $20 cheaper than my current offer)

  • I don't want a satellite connection. Does anyone know if you still get a new connection on existing Telstra coaxial cable?

    • +1

At my last place I used the excuse of my landlord won’t allow a dish on the roof. This was over a year ago and they reluctantly agreed.
However, they don’t make iq4 for cable and they stopped producing iq3 for cable. So if they agree you’ll end up with a refurb iq3 or an old iq2

  • Far better value subscribing to Kayo ($25) and Netflix ($14).

    • Or Foxtel (39) Netflix (14)

  • +1

After 20 years with Foxtel I finally cancelled last month. I don't miss the constant adverts one bit. Free Fetch TV with Optus is way better value with my networked PC and Netflix.

  • The sport coverage such as cricket and most football codes is quite good. There is a lot of advertisement with other channels, Insurance adverts and sports betting can drive you mad. You end up recording most programs just so you can fast forward the adverts. IQ3 was OK though it becomes very sluggish very soon once you have a decent amount of content saved.

If you are a sports nut then it is tough to choose anything else in Australia apart from free to air. If you need Foxtel and love your sport then this is a good deal. Else, steer well clear of them.

  • Still a rip off.

  • Perfect timing. Just moved to a new place and footy season starts tomorrow 😍

    • Next week ;) :P

      • 4k F1 this weekend! 😍

  • How long do you need to have been unsubscribed to be considered new customer?

    • I've been told 3 months, but I'm sure you can just use a partners name or kids over 18 and they wouldn't know the difference.

Or even a different email address

  • I think the bonus 32 inch TV may not be available now or should I say the 2000 odd signs ups have been completed as I cant see it available on the fox site?
The Fox customer service said they dont know if any is available either but to see if it is still being advertised on the fox web site.

  • +1

$39 mth .- Just wanted to thankyou for your information, I rang Foxtel to cancel. I was paying $58 for Entertainment, Sport, HD and had and Mystar 2 box. Frustrated by all the deals others were receiving, I was prepared to go with Kayo and Stan. However was pleased to accept $39 per month for same package and get a new IQ4 box with free insatallation. ( I had previously messaged them earlier and they only offered to change for 4mths and no new box). So $39 deal is still in play.
