• FYI Sophia UTM is free for home and it gives AV for all PCs included.

• +2

But you need a computer with dual nics to set that up, this can be installed on 10 pcs

• -1

Do you? A bit technical but if you have the know how you could achieve that anyway just in like VMWare Workstation or Vsphere/Hyper V if running a home server. You don't need it to be your actual firewall/UTM, could just have it on in a VM to control your AV centrally/set policies.

It's actually a decent system using via the UTM. Not sure what Sophos calling it but like most other vendors they have web category blocking. If you have the AV installed as well then you can enforce those categories on managed devices outside the network. So kids can't take their laptop to friends and bypass the filtering.

• You are passing all your network traffic via UTM it so you can do via a single nic but you might have a bottleneck there.

I haven't seen any firewall appliances that use 1nic

Your talking about installed av now not utm

• -1

@asa79: No I'm saying do you have to pass everything through just to get the free AV part?

Also sure you can absolutely have a Firewall with one NIC. But yes I think with the Sophos and other similar firewalls without VLANing you'll have a tough time as by default everything is ruled by interface, but again you can change rules to just be by subnet - just set two IPs on the same interface.

• @deelaroo: So your saying your using the installed AV on the computers one with is the Sophos Home instead of the UTM?

• -1

@asa79: I am saying you get the full managed Sophos AV for free with the UTM home license.

There is nothing saying you have to use the UTM feature, just run it up in a VM, even with a dummy second NIC if it needs it, get your installer and installer key for the AV part, install on PCs as required for free.

• @deelaroo: Yes the Sophos Free version, which you can get for free anyway.

This is the Premium so not sure where your saying you get the Premium version for free?

• -1

@asa79: You get the full corporate level managed AV that the business UTM customers get. There is no difference in license of the desktop AV product you get with the home UTM license.

• @deelaroo: Nope, your incorrect there, have a look of the list of features of the UTM and compare them to the premium, you dont get:

• Malware Remover
• Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• Ransomware Security
• Banking Protection
• Privacy Protection
• Identity Protection
• Advanced Web Security

I'm happy for you to correct me

• @deelaroo: Adding on to that

From Sophos News website

Sophos Home Premium delivers advanced, real-time protection powered by a host of technologies from our Intercept X and Central Endpoint Advanced business offerings, as well as remote management for up to 10 PCs or Macs.

https://news.sophos.com/en-us/2018/02/06/sophos-home-premium…

"hightlighted the parts Intercept X and Central Endpoint Advanced business offerings" Which is extra cost to businesses. Truth me I have been dealing in Sophos in large environment and pricing and licensing models. I found it hard to get them to pay the extra for Intercept X

• -1

@asa79: Actually bothering to look into it or give it more than the 2 seconds attention a child like you deserves it seems the UTM product is dead and about end of life now, the AV product as you have pointed out hasn't been updated with newer features. Ignore everything I said it was based on a few years back just a suggestion to get AV for free.

I know what I am talking about with firewalls and things. I'm not sitting in an armchair I'm sitting working at an MSP dealing with this stuff day after day, just my knowledge on this one product was a few years old. I was just trying to suggest something may be useful to people, read back your literal accosting in post form mate.

But, you are a pedantic baby. Congratulations for knowing "more from your highchair" baby.

• @deelaroo: That is an invalid negative vote

There has been heaps of updates to the Sophos Home Premium daily definitions

Can you provide your proof that its end of life like you say, otherwise its not warrant a neg vote

• @asa79: Can you read a single thing I say?

the UTM product is dead

• @deelaroo: So why did you downvote this product as it has not connection to UTM??

• @deelaroo: So because you were incorrect, you down voted a deal, that's very mature

• @deelaroo: The UTM only protects the traffic that goes thru it, as it inspect every packet as its going from your network to the internet and vice versa. IF your bypassing it to talk computer to computer you dont get any protection from it

You could have a single NIC firewall but you would be limiting the data flow. I personality wouldn't have a single NIC firewall, but totally up to personal choice.

• The free spohos home gives you the same features as UTM. They are just basic av protection tho.

But each to their own

• +1

Or, for free (if you have old PC with two NICs or a switch with Dot1q): Sophos' XG Firewall Home Edition or UTM Home Edition as internet gateway.

• The UTM i think only has much protection as the free version, as the full protects against ransomware, privacy protection, web security, banking protection, etc

• Ideally you would use both the installed and the UTM or XG if you can

• How does Sophos compare against OZBargain's favorite Kaspersky and Bitdefender?

• +2

commercial grade product, you dont see kaspersky used in large corporates. Bitdefender is supposed to be good but i havent seen any large corporates running it either

• Sophos Home Premium delivers advanced, real-time protection powered by a host of technologies from our Intercept X and Central Endpoint Advanced business offerings, as well as remote management for up to 10 PCs or Macs.

• Sophos UTM is good, but its a different product, its a network protection product
