@ilovefullprice: I wouldn't discard your Opal card. You don't get off-peak rates and you can't use it on buses if you use contactless to tap on.

Guess will have to keep my Opal and the benefit I can see of using MasterCard is when I forget to bring my Opal card.
Only on Sydney trains, ferries and light rail. Buses still require Opal cards.

Advertising department, justifying their existence. Personally I think its great. Much better to give it away like this than to spend say 1 million on a billboard
Brand of credit card does matter in some minor instances, e.g. some travel websites or airlines will only give fee free payment for one type of card (Jetstar it's MC debit, with some aggregators it's Visa credit), which allows them to say their advertised prices are 'all in', with no unnecessary hidden fees.

What's the point of unactivated gift cards? What a waste…
They just stuffed up the execution. No need to her the deal. I'm sure they (MasterCard) will sort the people with the inactivated gift cards out… they front spend all this effort to garner bad publicity.
It's nothing against you as the poster (great job) but there ARE perfectly valid reasons for the neg.
- Unobtainable (currently you have spent your time, and as per my comment below you may receive nothing)
- Issues with seller.
Take your pick.
Unless there is some way of differentiating these cards (people can have thrown out the outer packaging, so that's not reasonable) from others then anybody could now walk into a grocery store, take an unactivated card, then complain it was from this promotion. Frankly, this is not something they can sort out correctly in any technical way although they can still pay everyone if they are willing to pay the extra for all the thieves too. People may still receive them but at this time you've got nothing other than an hour or so of your life wasted.
Until you get paid it's a neg.

This promotion isn't going to achieve that. That decision is still based on whatever bank issues you a better card for a particular purchase (eg: price protection for big purchases, shitty ass points scheme for groceries, whatever)..
