Lol. I take it you just found this via my post? ;-)

    • Found TorTech on whirlpool forums when Amazon Germany stopped shipping here. After reading your comment on my deal, I checked TorTech's site and found the 2000W on sale. The 1010W is good enough for most av receivers but considering the small price difference, the 2000W is great value.

  • Nice deal. Was very tempted to add it to the stables for my new workshop but I remembered I've already invested in a 15A Variac so no need for this. Gotta keep my tools & test gear to a minimum this time around ;)

I've been using this to run an American Harman Kardon receiver for 6 months now with zero problem. $85 seems like a more reasonable price and it hasn't caught on fire yet.

  • Not completely safe, because the mains frequencies are different. USA is 60Hz mains, Australia is 50Hz mains. If your US device contains a motor or transformer, or other parts in some cases, there are problems.

A transformer designed for 60Hz will be physically smaller than one designed for 50Hz. If you run a transformer designed for 60Hz on 50Hz mains, it will generate more heat, and can overheat and fail.

Some motor types have this problem too. Many devices have cooling fans.

"60Hz motors run on 50Hz will run slow and overheat (and produce less than rated power)"
    https://www.reddit.com/r/electricians/comments/4rd50m/using_…

"If there are transformers they can saturate and toast."
    https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=256934

These problems may not affect you, if the components were over-rated for their task. But it's very difficult to tell if they'll affect you, you'd have to run the appliance on 60Hz, measure the temperatures, then run it on 50Hz and see if the individual components (motors, transformers) get hotter, and you'd also have to know the maximum temperature those parts are rated to.

The risk is that you could destroy your US device, or possibly start a fire.

Tortech are only guaranteeing that their step-down transformer is safe - not what you are plugging into it.

Tortech do mention the frequency problem, - question 9 on their FAQ page (which I'm having trouble loading):
    https://www.tortech.com.au/voltage-converter-faqs/

Question 19 of the FAQ explicitly says US microwave ovens WILL NOT work (highlighted in red!). Microwaves have large transformers, it's almost certainly the largest transformer in your household appliances. Proof of the frequency problem.
