Help Me Find an All around Laptop - Budget $2,000+

Hi guys, I need help choosing a laptop. I found this form on Reddit that might help to sort what i'm looking for.

Total budget: $2000+.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a good battery life and the best specifications for the money.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important but I would prefer a thinner and lighter laptop.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer 15'' screen and I wouldn't like anything smaller or bigger than that.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not at the moment but I might use adobe photoshop in the future and some programming also some light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is not that necessary but I might play some Total War games, League of Legends.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a good screen with good colors not 4k, A nice keyboard, and a good build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking into Dell XPS 15 9570 and Lenovo Ideapad L340 15'' Gaming which is a new gaming laptop from lenovo but I couldn't find any reviews for it online, they are currently both on sale and have similar specs, the Lenovo is much cheaper and has a better CPU but I don't know if the build is as good, the speakers or the display. XPS 15 is $2,549 and L340 is $1,642.40. I would really like any suggestions. Thanks

    Question Mark Tally: 8

  • I was in a similar situation and the HP Spectre X360 2018 line was my personal pick. Mainly picked this over the yoga 720 and XPS because it was the classier of the group and imo the best looking gen with a comfy keyboard as I don't really dig the 'gem cut' look the spectre line have going on currently.
    Specs: i7 8550u, 16gb ram, 512ssd, 4k with mx150 graphics.
Price range is betweeen 1.5k for refurb and 2.5 for a new one if you can find a seller.

    • It's pretty hard to find a seller on AU with a decent price for Spectre X360, whats your experience with it so far ?

      • I bought mine from US ebay and paid the extra tax because it still turned out cheaper in the end around 1500aud total for everything back when the exchange rate was better. Not sure why this line has so many refurbished units only but ao far, it has been flawless to me coming from an older laptop. If you are a casual user then I definetly reccomend it, I'm no power user but with all the multi tasking I honestly can't fault with it.
I'd compare the experience of this with how apple users would generally describe their macbooks, they don't say much because there's nothing to really complain about. Hopefully you made a decent chouce though

  • XPS seems good. Price range from $1450 onwards on ozbargain depending on what model you get.

    • Yes, I just wanted to know is it worth it the extra 1000 dollars when there are much cheaper laptops with the same performance.

  • Have you looked at a 2nd hand gaming laptop?

    • No I haven't. Do you suggest any?

  • 15" is pretty large. At that size, I would definitely be looking into 4c/8t (15W or higher) Intel CPU with some dGPU aswell (GTX 1050 Ti, or better).
The bad part is, its not going to be as thin as you might have imagined. And its either going to be relatively heavy, or its going to be flimsy-light.

There's no more bargains in the laptop market anymore, at least nothing like we used see back in 2011-2014.
If you don't mind, perhaps you could look into the Used Market…. but beware, laptop batteries do wear out quickly and they're expensive to replace.

    • I know 15'' is pretty large, but i have been using one for so long I don't think I can change to a smaller size and a bigger size would mean a heavier laptop. Yes, that's why I wanted some suggestions. The ones that i have been looking at the XPS 15 and Lenovo L340 Gaming are pretty thin and light and have pretty good specs. And the Lenovo L340 looks pretty cheap atm I just can't find any reviews for it.

    Total budget: 2000+ AUD.

    So min $2000, max unlimited?

    • Well kind of, but i might buy a laptop thats good enough up to $3000 anything more than that i think it's unnecessary.
