Which Hot Water System Suit for Me?

Hi guys,

My hot water service is out of order now. It was water storage style by natural gas. My house is small & old. It may needs development soon. I live alone and use hot water for shower only. I am between changing the hot water tank (cost me around $1,500?) or upgrade to continuous flow system (which requires pipe-works & power point, cost around $3,000 Or more?). Or, just getting small electric hot water tank?
Thanks for your comments in advance.

Do you use gas for anything else? If not get rid of gas and get electric hot water & solar. Even if you do, consider going to electric cooking and heating OR get LPG for cooking (your stove may need conversion) and get reverse cycle heating & cooling. The gas daily charge is extortionate at the best of times but obviously worse for small households.

Or at least get some quotes and compare with your gas bill and see if it is worthwhile. Instant gas hot water is FANTASTIC but make sure you're willing to pay the daily rate for the luxury if you're tempted to upgrade.

  • how soon is soon? cheaper to get a gym membership and shower there lol
    or a bucket and kettle

if ur developing soon, get a cheap replacement

depend how soon is soon? the same time as the market crashes? when labor wins government? when aliens invade?

  • what model was it and where are you based?

  • I’d get a Rinnai instantaneous system.
I think $3000 is a bit too much, get a few quotes.
    $2000 more realistic

    • $3000 too much?….based on what information?

if there is 100m of 25mm gas pipework to be laid……

      • OP said small old house, it could need 100m of upgraded gas pipe, maybe.
$3300 might be the best deal possible ringing around paying the trades seperate buying the unit yourself price.
Or could be the, i don’t really know what I’m doing I’ll google local plumbers and call the one at the top of the google list price.

  • Thanks for your comments. My house would go development in 3-5 years based in Adelaide. The broken unit is Rheem. I got a quote for instantaneous system $3,300.

    3-5 years?

I'd search on Gumtree for a 2nd hand one or Free one from people who are demolishing their house.

So say $100 or free, plus $200 installation.

No point buying a new one if it's only for a few years. One thing, check the sacrificial anode to see if there is anything left. If bare wire, walk away if even free as you have to pay for installation.

My uncle gave me a used Rheem Gas Storage hot water system. It was about 5yo at the time. 8 years later, still working fine (house turned into a rental property). I changed the sacrificial anode after about 10 years and it still looked near new.

I had a newish gas ducted heating unit and a oldish Rheem Gas Storage hot water system in my old house. I demolished the house and demolishers either binned it or sold them for peanuts. I should have attempted to sell it but didn't have the time.
