No, it's the same as cooking on a cast iron BBQ plate. i.e. Nothing you cook in it can really ruin the pan. For example with those chicken kebabs on sticks Colesworths sells, you put oil in, get the pan hot, put them in and cook, rotating on each side as normal. Their marinade may stick depending on heat, sugar content, etc. but just put a 1/2 cup of water in the pan while you eat and at most it will need a light scrub with steel wool. (Green scourer works but more effort. Steel wool is nearly just a wipe more than a scrub.) And if you forget to put water in then, just leave it in longer. Even overnight. Some rust might form but just a light scrub removes it and coat with a little oil on paper towel.

Oh, and if you cook something based on tomato it will taste odd. If you want cast iron cookware for such meals you use one with enamel coating.

  • Just bought one but don’t know what to do with it.

  • I've the 12" Lodge with silicon handle and it's great. The best pan I've have for searing steak or tuna etc.

Bear in mind I have only every cooked with electricity so have been working out the best options for 30+ years now. Why? Just none of my houses have had gas as an option.

The real benefit it that it retains heat so well so once it's up to temperature adding steak/tuna etc adding the steak/tuna etc has little impact and it's done in 3/4 mins.

I've used for stir fry a couple of times too and it's okay but a little shallow - I have an electric Wok that works well for this kind of dish as it's deeper

  • Bought 2.. I've had a lodge combo cooker for years and years. I Bake bread in it.

  • Cheers OP! Ive been a Lodge 10" cast iron user for over a year now, and they sure are amazing as many of the comments above can also attest too. Also a bit of simple love & care (ie only washing it with hot soapy water after use + oiling afterwards whilst hot) will ensure they last for years if not decades.

Picked up the 8" Lodge and 12" Victoria for $40 incl delivery. Great score!

  • Bought one only because of the number of +votes

  • not really sure why the red handle is cheaper then the black handle version

    • +1

Red cooks faster. Much like the speed of red cars.

      • i wanted the black one, but not pay $20 more

  • used this to cook beef cheeks yesterday. seared it using this then threw the whole thing into the oven for 3 hours. flavour was amazing and the meat melts in your mouth

    • Did it let off a lot of smokes when searing - has triggered my fire alarm twice when cooking so have to be extra cautious…

      • yes it did! but it was very quick. once seared the casserole was insane! use less oil helps.

  • Thanks OP, :)
Been reading about Lodge cast iron pans for yonks, so grabbed one of these!

    Cheers!

  • Please provide details on the cashback!!

If you own cast iron cookware, I recommend checking out a YouTube channel called Townsends. It showcases eighteenth century cooking. Great insight into history (mainly American) and some good recipes.

    • +1

      Townsends is great.
I would recommend Cowboy Kent Rollins, heaps of recipes and also has advice on how to care for cast iron and comparisons between brands.

I'll check it out. Thank you.

  • I can see it for $24.14 with handle (black) !

  • Awesome! Got the 12". Since I already had the $30 voucher from the price error HDD, ended up costing about $13. Very happy right now.

      Very happy right now.

      Don't worry, there's always tomorrow.

      • LOL.. indeed. Still a weekend tho.

  • lodge dutch ovens any good?

    • I've been happy with mine. Always great to have a nice roast or stew on winter camps.

  • I have used both these and Aldi ones (Crofton), I failed to see any difference.

  • Ordered. Thanks OP!

Thought I would do some research as to why people like cast iron vs normal fry pans… some interesting comments:

I received my skillets in less than a week, very impressed.

I do wish to share some bad news which in turn is kinda good as I don't leave for our holiday for another 3 weeks, however, with the order I also ordered a B+W lens filter which they shipped in the same parcel.

The moment the Fedex guy rocked up, with the heavy box (3 skillets inside) I thought A. I hope the filter is packaged well or B. The lens filter is completely shattered. Well B happened. Bad news is I need to buy another one, good news they refunded the entire order order of $180+ I am inconvenienced for a week or so whilst this new filter arrives, impressed with their quick remedy however it boggles me to think they would package 10KG's of iron with a fragile lens filter!

It's one area where Amazon are really bad. No thought is put into what's being packaged together. On the plus side, they're really good at fixing these issues.

    Price is now $18.93!

  • I was tricked into buying this pan at $24. Now it is $19. Horrible fate.

  • Anyone received there's yet ordered 10 days ago and still estimates 9 days away? This is to metro sydney

  • FWIW The "Sportsman's Grill" (https://www.amazon.com.au/Lodge-L410-Sportsmans-Grill-Black/…) is $134.88 delivered. Personally I prefer the Weber "Go Anywhere" as it is lighter, has a lid, cools off quicker - basically is better for travel. But I had to bin my old Weber a while ago and the Lodge will probably last forever….

  • mine arrived with a ~4cm triangle broken out of the rim. Amazon pays up to $32 return shipping but urgh, $23 item shipped back and forth from USA.

    • Have you spoken to them? They've never actually asked me to return anything where it was damaged or the wrong item.
