Cheapest way to setup smartwatch e-sim for use 1 month only

Hi . I just bought a Galaxy Watch (46mm LTE model sm-805f)
I only want to try the watch (with its esim active for calls and a very small amount of mobile data required).

I cannot change my current mobile plan or add anything onto current plan, because I am on the old unlimited data/calls/text Optus prepaid, and I utilise the unlimited data as home wifi for Netflix etc.

I went into Optus store and they said the cheapest option is $30 month and 12 month lock-in contract. No way I’m paying $360 just to try this watch. It’s quite likely I will be bored with it in a month and on-sell it.
I know I can connect watch to my phone and use it that way, but for me that defeats the purpose of having this galaxy watch model. I have the older Samsung watches that require phone nearby to connect, but I soon realised if my phone is nearby, I’m just going to pick that up and do whatever I was going to do on smartwatch.

Something that works while I’m out and don’t want to take my phone could be very useful. I guess I can forward calls and texts from my primary number.

Perhaps, if 12 month plan is only option to activate these esim cards, maybe there is some very cheap plan like where you get the first 6 months for $1/month, then $10 for the other 6 months . I would be ok paying this (but prefer cheaper) because at least if I stop using the watch hopefully I could continue using the extra phone number in an actual phone, by requesting a physical sim.

  • Optus gives you the first month free, then 5 per month after that. No contract.

Go through the SIM process in your phone and it'll show you the tnc

  • Test features at home via wifi for a few weeks.

You can then work out how well it's going to work for calls and messages

  • You need a Samsung Galaxy Phone to activate the eSIM on Optus, just in case you're not using one.

    Samsung Galaxy Watch (Cellular)
Follow these steps to activate a profile via your compatible Samsung Galaxy mobile phone. Your mobile phone must be a Samsung Galaxy > device running Android version 5.0 or later with RAM 1.5 GB or over.

    • Thank you for the info . Optus is too expensive though, so I require a cheaper option .

  • No one offers e sim on prepaid sadly.
You will need to sign up to a plan whether it’s month to month or 12
Months you can’t get e-sim while on a prepaid plan.

    • Thanks for the info. I was aware that prepaid was not an option for esim.
Is there month to month 'postpaid plan's that do not require lock in contract for 12 months or 6 months etc .
It seems there are so many deals posted here for postpaid sim cards. A recent offer was giving people $20 profit from signing up and then canceling after 1 month. Something like this for my esim postpaid account would be ideal

      • +1

Telstra, Vodafone and Optus all do post paid month to month
Telstra and Vodafone offer first month free when you connect a smart device e-sim

So you could sign up, use the free month for the e-sim then cancel and port out

        • Awesome. Thanks very much.
I will try Vodafone or Telstra first month free.
Regarding optus though, I was in the store and the staff there told me only 12 month lock in contract post paid plan's available for esim.
