  • Is this 1.5 good enough for WhatsApp calls?

    • WhatsApp implements WebRTC technology and the Opus codec. The minimum requirement for a WhatsApp call is 64 kbps. You should also be able to video call with that speed

“5G Network Access Free and automatically included until 30 June 2020. A 5G compatible device is required.“

    Woah, that’s a bonus

  • I'll be jumping across to this plan the moment Optus kill off unmetered Netflix and Spotify streaming on my $20/2Gb tablet plan.

    • +2

Isnt your netflix limted to 1.5Mbps anyway? this will give you more data, $5 cheaper and unlimited data for everything once your data runs out. unless you are talking a plan that included calls and texts

  • Reminds me of Bigpond plans 10 years ago….

  • +2

I've been living off of a 10gb plan with peace of mind data as my main WiFi to keep my internet connected devices not just attached to a ghost network. I was surprised to find that the capped 1.5Mbps data was good enough for me to watch Netflix US/UK through a VPN and get 480p/720p.

Even more surprised to find I could play games online while livestreaming at 1080p60. Still haven't worked out how that's possible with 1.5Mbps upload, but not complaining.

    • +1

      Hooray for today's compression technology

    • Hi, so you use this via a key or tablet? That’s insane. Good on you as it would save you lots of money

  • -5

Guys, this is not a “plan” this is an add-on FYI.
You add it onto your existing plan (which at the moment is minimum $45/50). So for $65 a month it’s not really great value, Optus and Vodafone has very similar plans for a lot cheaper

    • You don't need other plans to go on this.

    • It is a plan. You can walk in and sign up to one without any other Telstra services.

    • Guys, this is not a “plan” this is an add-on FYI.

No, it isn’t. This is a stand-alone plan, no idea where you’re getting that it’s only an add-on.

Edit: Should refresh the post before replying 10 minutes after it’s already been answered 😂

    • Don’t give wrong information

  • Anybody knows how the data allowance works with Telstra air. Does using neighbours Telstra air chew into the data allowance. And what's the typical speed when using Air?

    • +1

Anybody knows how the data allowance works with Telstra air.

I think it uses your home internet allowance. If you have unlimited, you get unlimited Telstra Air. Not entirely sure how it works if you have a Sim Only plan or mobile broadband plan.
With fixed internet (Cable, NBN, etc) it's your monthly data allowance.

Does using neighbours Telstra air chew into the data allowance.

      No it doesn't

what's the typical speed when using Air?

It's very unstable but barely 1mbps. 3mbps if you are lucky.

  • -4

Jesus, deals like this is going to put a lot of pressure on the NBN with their crazy CVC pricing model.

    • How?

      • +4

In the same way BMW are concerned about the push bike market killing their sales.

  • Totally looking at getting this, just realised I'm still paying $90 a month for Vivid wireless which is also capped around 1.5MBPS (though I usually get a little bit more). This is not only cheaper but at least I'll get a few weeks of super fast speed as well!

    • +2

This deal is 1.5mbps (0.2MBps) when capped, vivid wireless is 12mbps (1.5MBps) standard afaik.

I'm on the $70 vividwireless plan, now optus

      • Oh jeez, thanks for the heads up, I almost jumped on it already. Cheers for that mate.

  • +2

Telstra is quite silly not offering Esim! I bet a lot of iPhone users would totally get this, coupled with dodo unlimited calls/sms @$5 a month!

    • Ya, it makes me thinking how to utilise Telstra data sim with either Optus or Vodafone sim only plan. I just need the cheapest sim to make calls and use this sim for data.

    • +1

Telstra finally supported esim, wo ho…

      • Yes I know, it starts on 20/09

  • Does this come with free dead birds as some may say?

    • Possibly microbats too. But it doesn't really matter either way, the powers have said it's safe therefore it's happening.

  • This could be an interesting proposition for someone who gets Telstra Air signal in their living room…

I assume the Telstra Air connection is not speed shaped even once you're over your data limit?

What are peoples experience with Telstra Air in terms or speeds and dropouts / reconnects?

It's crazy I get a few bars of Telstra Air (and don't even know where the payphone is near me) yet I can't get a signal from my lounge room to my bedroom due to think concrete/brick internal walls.

    • OK, answering my own question here a little… from reddit

"I use Telstra Air as my "home wifi".

      Some problems you'll have:
      - Having to log in anywhere between every 1 minute and every 1 hour and having all your connections severed in the meantime
      - Not being able to connect to the Internet if you get home and your neighbours' friends are using the hotspot
      - Any unencrypted websites you visit can be spied on by anyone within range
      - Someone too cheap to pay for Internet can clone your MAC address and use your data
      - It's pretty slow unless you're really close to the access point"

I wonder if you can get around this having your router 'auto log' back in?

Also, I found out that Telstra Air is also provided by other peoples home modems at 2 Mpbs down / 1 up.

      • the one from payphone pink booth is unlimited speed/quota that requires login as well

anyone know if possible to get router to rebroadcast telstra AIR wifi as personal home wifi for multiple device use ?

    • You can get AIR with long life prepaid if that’s you thing.

      • do you know if there is a way to get router rebroadcast AIR wifi as personal home wifi for simultaneous use on multiple devices ?

        • +1

I used a Laptop with Internet Sharing and Log In.
Laptop connects to Telstra Air, Ethernet to router to share the Laptop's connection.

  • I am not getting a 5G ready phone to use as a hot spot but I'd love to get a 5G compatible modem to use this for the kids. What are the cheap 5G compatible modems that I could buy to use this? Anything between $200 - $300? I am not going anywhere near the $1,000 HTC HUB!

    • +1

You don’t need a 5G modem to use this plan. Just buy a prepaid wireless telstra modem which can be found for $30 from woolies or Coles.

      • Didn't it say "5G compatible device is required?" I already have a Huawei B525 modem but the quota always run out before the last week. Need this one for the kids to video stream all day long when data runs out.

        • +1

Works fine for me on my Huawei B525.

5G compatible device is only required if you want to connect to the 5G frequencies. 4G is plenty fast.

          • @TomGum: Thanks. That's great to know. I thought 5G is required and didn't want to chance it without confirmation.

  • The hard part about this is convincing the wife

    • This is what the wife prefers, so don't be soft!

  • -4

    shit plan!!

  • So putting this in a phone works?

edit: you guys say supposedly so.

What I'm worried about though is the inability to receive sms. is that really true? ugh. so many places use sms messaging to confirm appointments. but it sure does sound nice to just pay $15 a month and never have to worry about data again.

    • got a duel sim phone?

  • Last time I looked 12gb / 12000mb was listed as "excessive use" on the "unlimited" plans under the fairplay policy- has anyone had any luck going way over that on this plan? Thanks!

    • +1

Whirlpool users have used over 100gb. theres no limited unless its in a congested area and they they may slow your speed more. but i nmy experence no issues using close to 50gb at 1.5mbps

      • Thanks @gingerale95 - amazing deal in that case, cheers!

  • So I’ve just got my sim today on the 5GB $15 plan and it’s showing “unlimited” next to local calls and local texts in the my plan section of the Telstra 24x7 app.
I know the CIS says there is no included calls or texts, I wonder if that will change as it also says I’ve got 1 day left on the current billing period.

    • Take a screenshot and tell them to do it or else

      • I've got the sim for an ipad so won't even get a chance to test it. I might try a text in a phone to see if I get charged. It still says unlimited calls and texts and it's just started a new billing period.
Here is the screenshot from the 24x7 app https://xur.li/2lCERAE

        • +2

Calls and texts are charged at prepaid rates and billed additionally to the data plan. Also was told by Telstra that the sim cannot be used in a phone and they may remove the offer.
I had a bit of trouble just getting the sim ordered, Telstra is so complex and a simple task is often made very difficult, way too many automated processes.
For those interested, I used up my 5GB data after 3 days and my capped speeds were a solid 1.6Mbps up and down. Have been streaming netflix and youtube with no issue, just the occasional buffer. I have the sim in a 4G router and find it working well enough as long as your expectations are reasonable. If you mainly just web browse or email then this plan is suitable for that purpose. I’m guessing it will depend on your area and congestion levels.

          • @db1: does the billing starts after sim order, or there is activation step later ?

do you need settings for 4g router , or pop in the sim and it just works ?

            thanks.

  • Hey folks according to whirlpool Telstra will supports esim on iPhone. From 20/09/19 Can someone on here comment whether they could have this plan added to their iPhone (after 20/09)?

  • Sorry for my nerd. How can I buy this? Online or in store? Since there no payment link in OP.

    • +1

Instore or online if you go to their wireless Broadband sim section

    • +1

Buy via Cashback links for extra saving.

      • what's the cashback link ?

cashrewards ? only applies to selected plans, don't think this 1 is eligible ?

        thanks

        • Shopback tracked $35 Cashback for this monthly plan.

          • @Steptoe: Thanks.

Tried to order online but got error - unable to complete order, please proceed to nearest telstra store.

            :(

            • @dcep: That is likely only ID/employment verification. The store can continue your application to maintain the Cashback

    • Thanks all!

  • might give it a shot. So about 90 minutes to download a 1gb file at 1.5mbps does that sound right.

  • Why credit check for a prepaid plan? i do not want a credit check hit for buying a prepaid plan. Thanks Telstra

    • +1

It's a contract. Although you pay in advance for the month any excess usage is charged in arrears.

Calls are very expensive and will be billed. It's for data only.

      • +1

oh i get it, i thought its real prepaid where i have a choice to top up or not. Thanks a lot for making it clear.

  • hi anyone used this in a phone, does it work?

    • I ask via chat support and they said yes it can be used in a phone but not for calls and text.

  • Hey guys,

Will this work in an old phone as a hotspot device?

    • yes,I am using

  • Is anyone using Fetch TV with this after slowing down to 1.5Mbps?

    • +1

would work as long as its not updating in the background or any other device in your home is connected and loading. expect 360 or 480p

      • Will it continously play with 480p or will the be intermediate stops for buffering 720p

        • +1

i would only expect 480 or even 360. Video apps dont like to keep stopping to buffer

  • For those looking for call and sms, Telstra is also offering a 10aud off as well for mobile plans if you couldn't be bothered using a dual sim phone: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/sim-only-plans#new

Not that cheap, but still 10aud off

  • Does anyone know about this: "until 30 June 2020, then opt in for $15/month" How do you opt in? I can't find anything on the Telstra website or the critical information.

    • It seems to be about the 5G access. If you want the 5G to continue, it's opt-in (and I think you pay extra?). Otherwise, it continues with 3G/4G.

  • Was just talking to one of the chat reps who advised me that there's an additional $10/month discount on the S/M/L plans for the first 12 months, bringing the 20GB S plan down to $15/month which is pretty reasonable IMO. Can't find any reference online - could be because I'm an existing customer?
