I bought a V30+ at the last JB sale about a month ago. It's a great phone for the money, and if you're into music the quad DAC is fantastic for cable connection to headphones, amp or car system. If you use bluetooth you won't get the benefit though. I use the headphone jack to connect to my car stereo and home rotel amp and the sound is miles better than the Samsung phones we also have in the family.

Overall I'm very happy with the phone for the price. A notification LED would be handy, but I'm getting used to not having it.

LG started to roll out the pie update, but people were reporting a few issues, so they pulled the update and will release it again when issues are sorted. I didn't update initially, and am glad I waited. The original OS is fine, and I quickly adapted from my Samsung S6 edge.

I was looking at the V30+, A50 and Reno Z, and went with the V30. As others have said the front facing camera is average, so if you're big into selfies maybe look at the Reno Z or A50.

    • +2

V30 and V30 plus are the same phones, except the plus has more storage and decent earphones.

    • LG started to roll out the pie update, but people were reporting a few issues, so they pulled the update and will release it again when issues are sorted. I didn't update initially, and am glad I waited.

I couldn't resist updating. My main issue that it doesn't 'pin' my recently used apps properly.
Do you have link? Will I get the re-update too?

  • I as well bought this on the last $399 promotion through JB. For the price it's excellent, really good. Dollar for dollar you won't find a better phone. But is it a high end smartphone? Certainly not. I come from a Samsung S7 and I can't wait to go back to Samsung (currently looking at deals for the S10). Lags, freezes, lack of system updates. I often multitask and this phone does struggle doing so. For simple, low usage users I think it's an amazing deal and great phone. But for those of us that are heavy day to day users pay the bit extra and get something better. I wish I had of.

    • $399 tho 👍

      • +1

Yeah absolutely, for the price great phone mate.

        • I'm on the flipside - just bought an S10+ for ~920, wish I'd waited it out for this now!

If you buy giftcard from this deal, technically another 10% off.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482446

        • Can you stack gift cards?

I got given a $50 gift card from the nespresso deal

        • +2

According to that deal you can only purchase for 1 gift card.

    • +5

I smash the usage on mine. Perm got 20+ tabs open. Never shut apps down, on it all day browsing, streaming music, anything, everything. Still got heaps of storage & RAM. Baffles me, when people (not you) laugh @ specs like these.

Not sure what I could do to get your experiences. I sometimes got it with my OnePlusX before this. But I just managed my usage. 3GB RAM, <12GB ROM.

  • +2

Audio is amazing on this phone. Upgraded from S7 and really happy with it. Fingerprint scanner is also quite fast too

  • +1

    Battery life?
    What's everyone getting.

Currently getting 20 mins out of my axon.
I only use camera and mp3 player so not a super user!

    • If I use it as a car stereo input [ cable - don't want to waste the DAC] and drive a pair of AKG K52's to drown out shopping mall music, [ ~ 3 hours] use about an hour's worth of browser, send 5 or 6 texts and make about 7 calls then I'm sometimes down to ~ 67% after 10 hours.

      • Sounds good.

    • +1

Better to check reviews, but it's the first touchscreen I can use ALL day with zero concern of charging. The way it should be! Even then, fast charge!! 50% in 20min!

    • Same, after a year or so my Axon 7 is literally dying, it shuts down randomly at 40% charge. After 1hr of general use, phone must be charged again. I never game on my phone, it's always Instagram, messenger and similar light apps. More and more apps are crashing and my phone just can't handle anything anymore :( I'm eyeing the LG30+ but the camera worries me (and potentially the battery).

      • +1

Same, after a year or so my Axon 7 is literally dying

Cross post from my wp post. The rep on WP said the battery is covered under the 24 month warranty though

Yeah the battery on my Axon 7 is pretty crap now (and I've only been using it for a year). I've tried calibrating too – charging to 100% from completely flat while the phone is off, then turning it on and rebooting to see if it'll stay at 100%. Pretty much every time on reboot it would drop to well below 100%, like in the 80s, 70s, sometimes even 60s. So I'd turn it off again and charge to 100% again. The thing is, after a lot of this rinsing and repeating, it doesn't seem to end and I don't have all day to fully calibrate it – even tried all day on a Sunday one time and it never stayed on 100% or close to it :/

        • Mine is dec 2017. So i am going to try to get it replaced :)

        • +2

UPDATE: ZTE sent me a new axon 7. So looks like i am good for another year at least :)

          • @thekow: Awesome. I'll do mine before Jan next year. How quick was the turnaround? Did you do a factory reset before sending it back? Did they?

            • +2

@CVonC: Brand new phone so you factory reset the phone and send it. Just the phone, nothing else they send back a new phone as far as i could tell it was new new and not refurbished it was too good looking to be a refurbish.

Turn around was about 3 days depends on how you send it. I had parcel post and 2 days for that but 1 day back. I would give it 5 days just in case. Well it's 2pm now and i am at 80% and i unplugged at 5:30am this morning but i only used it for gym and spotify but usually it would be 80% within 20 mins of unplugging it. It came with the b12 rom too which is the newest for that phone without rooting.

Really happy with the result and turn around have to big up ZTE for that. Saves me buying a new phone for a little while.

    • Great battery life mate. I actually came from an axon 7 myself and needed to buy another phone, as I was having problems charging the axon. With moderate use, I can get nearly 2 days out of a single charge.

  • +8

Bought this the last time it was this price. The front camera is truly awful, and the lowlight performance for both cameras was terrible.
I made sure the pro video settings were on maximum bitrate and played with the ISO, and the grain was atrocious. My Axon 7 was far better

Ended up returning it and getting the Pixel 3a.

    • +1

i had the same experience. dont know what the people who say its camera is good have been smoking.

    • +3

How did you manage to return it?

    • Interested to know as well. How did you return it? Did you buy from JB?

    • +1

You could have just installed the Pixel 3 GCAM with Night Sight for awesome lowlight performance.

      • Doesn't installing GCAM require doing technical things like unlocking bootloaders and stuff?

        • +2

Not for this model (and maybe most LGs). I bought it the last time and was able to install. It's a matter of downloading the right apk and installing it.
Pain in the butt for my xiaomi mi max 3.

    • +1

Strongly agree. I missed the great camera in G4 - my G4 died due to bootloop.

When I got the V30, I was expecting at least the same quality camera - it's a few generations up, right? But only to find out they have made the camera much worse (how could they do that?!) The result is overly sharpen and overly saturated. Frustrating every time I have to correct the photo manually because the default result is just unbearable.

(My next phone won't be an LG - got bitten twice, sorry)

    • I too wish to know how to return it to JB Hifi after a couple of months. I really don't like the phone. Both cameras are the worst I've ever used, and I've used a lot of phones.

  • purchased this the last time around. coming from a pixel 2 im overall happy. only downside is camera which luckily i dont take many pictures but when you do, you wish you still had the pixel. but for 399 it is great.

    • Hey mate I'm also currently using a Pixel 2 and very tempted to get the V30+. With the minor differences do you think it was worth the "upgrade"? Thanks

  • +8

I also bought this phone during the previous JB $399 deal. The camera is truly mind-blowing. But it is definately an enthusiasts phone. Don't expect amazing results out of the box in auto mode. The camera shines in full manual mode, particularly shooting RAW where you can achieve some stunning results with a bit of post processing:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/lgv30/comments/cxr85l/stock_cam_wid…

And don't listen to people who say the front camera is crap. With the right GCAM APK sideloaded my front cam takes clearer selfies than my girlfriend's Pixel 3a.

The high bitrate Cine-Log manual video mode is incredible:
    https://youtu.be/TAhgEuR8WpU

And listening to FLAC audio via the quad DAC via a good set of headphones is sublime.

    For $399 it's a no brainer.

    • so the auto mode sucks right? coz not everyone got time to fidget around in manual mode, shot in raw and do post processing.

      • +2

No, definately doesn't suck. In full sun it's comparable to the Pixel 3a. In shade and low light the Pixel is noticeably better. For video, even in auto mode the LG (in my opinion) is better.

      • +8

A good camera for an enthusiast is never going to be a good camera for a basic user.

Just because it's not a good camera for your particular usage doesn't mean it isn't a good camera.

    • +3

Agreed, the camera is v.good if you use the manual mode, comparable to current iphone/samsung10 …but not so much using the LG camera app in auto. Using the GCam apk, photo quality improves a lot if using auto.
the video mode is highly customisable too, and there's a reason the v30 was 'collected' by filmmakers as a b-roll cam before the huaweis came along…
As for the audio quality, there isn't a non-LG phone out now that can compare - these reviews aren't wrong, eg, https://www.stereophile.com/content/lg-v30-hi-res-smartphone…

    • -1

      The camera is truly mind-blowing.

I think you're confusing field of view with image quality. Most landscapes will look amazing with the wide angle lens on the V30+.
I've had the Galaxy Note 8/9 and the V30+ and the Samsung devices took better pictures in most situations.

    • +1

Same here, bought during the last sale. Apart from the superior audio DAC, the graphic is top of the class, you can throw in any latest game and smoke other mid range phones in the market.

The back camera is good especially the wide angle, Auto is good for me. It's even better with the GCAM especially the BOkeh mode. The front camera sux if low light condition, so just stick with the back one.

The Ozb favourite is back again !

Good deal on the LG, just beware that it won't get android q/10

  • Does the Motorola come with fried chicken 🍗?

  • Was happy to stumble on this deal today, as I needed a new phone. I went into JB today to get it, thinking the deal was active. JB didn't know anything about it, but offered me the deal if I signed up to the Telstra $45 plan, and use the $100 voucher (from the Telstra deal) to bring the price down to $399. I was happy to sign up for the Telstra plan, but I've essentially paid $499 for the phone by missing out on the voucher.

I can't actually see this deal in the catalogue for the LG30 plus. If this deal does go live on the 12th, can I ask for the $100 voucher back? I've heard JB have a price cool off period or something?

    • I think they refund the difference if the price drop is within a few weeks or something. Check with the manager there.

Wouldn't touch V30 now the phone is consider old and out of support

    • Can't decide to wait for s10e, get huawei mate 20 pro for 700 now, or get the xiaomi 9T or this Lg V30plus. LG is 2 yrs old now.

      • -1

Great value lg but pretty old,

  • +1

in 2019, mobile phones with only 4GB Ram is blasphemy! LOL, yes - I'm referring to the LG and Motorola phones! …
but for under $500 I recently bought an OPPO RENO Z and it's a great phone for that price. If you don't need the best camera phone out there, I recommend Oppo Reno Z.

    • How's the in display fingerprint sensor? I heard it's a step backward as there's no tactile feedback.

  • Anyone can provide Review of v30 after 6 month+ use, last 2 phones I had are full of regrets(overheat and short battery life) don’t want another dud(ps one person of them is a Sony)

  • Had it since Jan when it was selling at 480. Battery life is good but seems to be started degrading although I have never drained the batter until less than 15% before recharging.

One weird thing is I have never dropped the phone and left the protective film at the back and the glass back was broken a couple of weeks ago I do not know why. Luckily the protective film is still there so the glass back is still in one piece.

    • Gorilla glass will crack but it won't come apart or shatter and cut your finger. It's not like window glass.

  • +2

Thinking of getting a V30+ only to be used as a DAP.

    • yes good call… tho i find it hugely irritating when plugged into my stereo setup and phone messages ping in. So you'll need to switch the phone to airplane mode to get clean sounds ;) am now using my old v20 instead most of the time just as a DAP for the home stereo, v.good and about the same quality as a Fiio X5 and a several hundred $$ Sony DAP 'walkman' - and the LGs have easier software to use for audio playback imho. The v30 might sound v.slightly more 'open' than the v20 when using the same headphones, but v.v.hard to tell and maybe only for some types of music?

  • +1

I took the plunge on the LG V30+ for $399 from JB a couple of months ago. The selfie camera on that phone is so bad that it makes the whole phone useless for me. The battery on the V30 is okay, but nothing to write home about. The screen is just okay. Most mid-range phones are 6.3 or 6.4 inches these days, and don't have all the space at the top and bottom of the screen like the V30+ does. It doesn't have stereo sound, let along Atmos sound like the Oppo Reno Z for basically the same price. The speed of the phone is fine, but so are all phones I've ever bought when they're brand new. Oh, and no notification LED is really bad too. This is the first phone I've owned without one. I hate having to reach around to the back to use fingerprints to unlock the phone just to see if it has charged or not. And you can't get a preview of text messages when the phone screen is sleeping. I wish I could return the LG and get the Oppo.

    • +6

These are the kind of comments that are typical of people who have not tinkered with the phone. There is nothing wrong with the front facing camera on the V30. LG's implementation of the camera app however is crap for photos in auto mode for both the front and rear camera. If you sideload a GCAM camera app you will find that the front camera takes selfies as good if not better (sharper) than a Pixel 3a (yes I have compared side by side). No, the phone does not have a notification LED. The AOD is excellent and the PIE update brings a edge notification light. Also, you can simply double-tap the screen to get message preview and charging status and double-tap again to return to the AOD. And seriously, how effective is stereo sound when the speaker separation is no more than a couple of centimeters.

      • -5

I've never had to "sideload a GCAM camera app" (whatever that means) on any other phone I've ever used in order to have decent quality pictures. Perhaps the phone should come with instructions on how to do that, in order to make their selfie camera acceptable…because the way it was sold to me is far from acceptable. Not a good way to do business. I like stereo speakers. I also like LED notification lights. These are the reasons I personally don't like this phone compared to others I've had in the same price range.

        • I've never had to sideload a camera app before either, but I knew about it before I bought the phone because it's well documented in several forums including this one. I also knew it didn't include a notification LED, stereo speakers and ATMOS (which by the way is a gimmick on a mobile device). Perhaps next time you should do a bit of research before buying instead of whinging on here about the features it doesn't have.

          • @aldroid: The reason why I bought it in the first place was because of all the positive feedback on this forum. I never read anything about having to upgrade the camera somehow with a special sideloading technique. I thought I'd give it a go, but my personal opinion is that I don't like the phone overall. You seem to be taking my personal opinion personally for some reason. Trying to help other users know about the phone from my own personal experience would hardly be 'whinging'.

            • +6

@trainingwheelz: The reason for all the positive feedback on this forum is because most users of this forum are astute buyers with the competence to install an APK file on an Android device. But I do understand your frustration. I also wish the LG camera was better out of the box, but there is a solution. I'm not taking your opinion personally, I just don't understand how you can complain about the phone not having features like LED notification, stereo speakers and ATMOS when the phone was never advertised to have these features and most astute buyers would already now this before making the purchase.

              • @aldroid: Perhaps you can provide a link to the APK file that makes the camera acceptable? I will give it a go….and then provide my feedback to LG so perhaps they don't expect their customers to have to use 3rd party apps to make their product usable. Hopefully they listen, and that will lead to more customer satisfaction and sales. My comments about the things the phone does not have (LED, stereo speakers) are meant to help other readers of this forum know that these features don't exist on the phone. I've never owned a phone without an LED notification light, so I thought it was very strange when the LG came without one. I now know that such a basic feature isn't included in all phones as it should be.

        • ever considered the apple iphone?

  • +5

For those interested in the LG V30+, you might care to know that these are not old stock. The phones are still being manufactured by LG and come in new packaging with the "ThinQ" branding. I had concerns over buying a 2 year old phone (specifically to do with the battery) but you can check the IMEI from numerous websites to get the date of manufacture. Mine was May 2019 (I purchased in July). Saying that, it is still 2 year old tech, so don't expect it to compare with a Samsung S10 or the latest flagship OPPO or Huawei.

    • +1

that's very helpful info though. That means the battery wouldnt have been sitting around for 2years+ hopefully.

I'm so keen for this phone but the reviews on the screen aren't great for outdoor use and I watch shows/movies on the train a lot.

The front camera i'm not fussed about coz i'd install gcam and make tweaks.

      • I don't think you need to be concerned about the screen. I use mine outdoor in full sun all the time and haven't had a problem. The display is very vibrant and bright. I don't think you'll have a problem on the train.
