Waiting to Buy PC during Black Friday Vs Now (via TechFast)

Hi guys,

I last built my computer around late 2010, so I feel I'm overdue for an upgrade now. I am not desperate for an upgrade or have the urgent need to do so. More than happy to wait out with the view to get the most bang for my bucks.

My question is, am I better off waiting to build a computer by buying bargains during the Black Friday or should I pull the trigger now via TechFast deals etc?

(Obviously with TechFast, I will probably switch few components from my existing CPU (as I bought a decent casing and PSU last time with a very long term view). I also have a custom Noctua heatsink/cooler which I believe is still useable by buying custom mounting.

I have been out of the CPU markets for a long time, so don't really know price cycles etc. Things are quite different. Back then you only have few shops/MSY and the Sunday computer swaps in your local townhall! LOL

Computer pricing is unpredictable. I waited before but found it was better to have the computer early. eg. I got utility out of the computer that was worth more than the potential $100 a month saving. Best deals were usually when ebay has a good discount code going (10 - 15% off).

No point waiting like the comment above said… Black Friday discounts on computer parts rarely happen, since PC parts are typically very low margin. Look at Linus's reply on how much margins are on core parts

You are typically better off just stacking discounted gift cards + eBay promotions to buy either a complete system or go bargain hunting for individual parts from various retailers.

  • It depends where you live, in USA Black Friday is properly deep black, in Australia pale grey at best: You'll have the usual 15 % off from usual stores and usual 10%off macs

TechFast deals are certainly good but if you are like me who doesn't like to skimp on mobo or PSU and want to get the exact components, you will find it more cost effective to just build yourself.
If you still have a working PC, you can slowly upgrade your components. Since you last built yours in 2010, it's likely that you'll need a new CPU+mobo+DDR4 RAM combo so you can leave that last.
But I suggest you should start looking now for GPU immediately, the component that will drastically improve your system if you game.
Then next is a good SSD if you haven't done so already. Depends on your budget, I'd even recommend a NVMe SSD at least for boot drive since the price of those have been very good and not substantially more expensive than SATA. Keep in mind that you most likely won't be able to use NVMe SSD on your current system.
Pick up a good 3000+MHz DDR4 RAM kit next. Although it's unlikely that you can utilize them on your current system, I don't think pricing will be much different now or Black Friday.
Now last for the CPU+Mobo, if you are going for value, 3600X-3700X would be your choice here but those are still quite hot, you can get the 3700X for ~450 (from 519 MSRP) but I do think they'll go down more towards the end of the year. X570 mobos are quite expensive atm due to PCIe 4, you do have the option of picking up a good X470 without any performance penalty though.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • Nah, I live in Aust. I was just banking on the possibility of Amazon/Ebay doing a huge sales.

Thanks for all the comment guys! I'll probably keep an eye on deals for Ryzen 3700X (again planning to future proof and fingers crossed use for another 5-7+ years).

    • Im thinking of doing the same, but will get things like the case, fans, psu since their prices dont fluctuate that much.

For the GPU, Mobo and CPU…
Definitely waiting for CES 2020 to see what the new Nvidia/AMD GPUs will be, and also to see if there will be any new gen AMD CPUs will be.
