Vodafone have added BYO option to their NBN plans. Critical Information Summary

Same as the post here but no more modem contract
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/451736

The conditions of the BYO plans appear to be the same.

I couldn’t find any options to sign up online so I signed up by chat.

One thing missing will be the 4G backup option. Not sure if you can utilise that option in BYO if you have a Vodafone Wi-Fi hub from somewhere else.

    • Hi I am in a similar situation too!!could some one help ne witha best go option to start NBN

  • Signed up a while ago, and didn't even realise there was cashback. Now there is apparently an option to BYO router too. lol.

Looks like they are ready to take on the market head on.

Is this going to be better than Telstra cable?
    I am eligible for HFC

  • switched from Aussie Broadband to this deal just then - 5 minutes and just needed to reset modem and it was done. Speed marginally better than ABB was. Very happy with $30 saving/month!

  • +2

Ok, i bit the bullet. It's ok for the price. I'd prefer 1000Mbps but we can only dream.

Went from AussieBB to Vodafone. $99 to $69. Had to signup over the phone.

Please someone tell me is it Mbps or MBps?

FTTN, can sync at 90-100Mbps, of course i never get it.

    Before: AussieBB 50Mbps was 40-47Mbps

    Before: AussieBB 100Mbps was 80-90Mbps

Now: 70-90Mbps Vodafone Upload is 10Mbps increase.

    Signup:

Talk to Philippines staff, i actually really dislike this part of the process, from talking to an Australian on AussieBB, the whole process felt robotic with Vodafone, although it wasn't bad, i was just told hundreds of lines of scripted jargon. They asked for a lot of details, such as CC numbers which should be done within a signup form. Honestly, why is this needed to be done over the phone?!

    Activation:

Less than 10 minutes, super fast. (EXCELLENT)

    Speeds:

Was on 100Mbps with Aussie and got 88Mbps (most of the time), with Vodafone i am getting 70-83Mbps, but this isn't peak. No dropouts, but i've had it for 20 minutes.

    Buffering:

4K video on YouTube test, before with 50Mbps AussieBB, two turns of the loading symbol, Vodafone, half turn. Or 2 seconds (AussieBB vs 1 second (Vodafone).

    Response times:

I feel a slight ping difference or load time difference, i am registering 4ms more on ping but i FEEL slightly slower.

Grain of salt on all of this, every connection is different,

    • +1

      Side Note:

International servers are far slower in their throughput.

      VPN:

(Same as always used) feels slower, it's an international link that goes via USA. It's definitely slower in response times.

      Torrents:

Says it was downloading at 2-3MiB/s which is higher than before. With Aussie it would be 1-2MiB/s (always through a VPN)

      Google CDN Server Download Test:

WOW. From 5Mbps to 9.3Mbps - 10Mbps. It started at 10Mbps and sat within 9-10Mbps. Impressed! If you work with gcloud, you'll most likely be happy.

      Azure US EAST test:

Terrible 300KB/s, Vodafone has poor international links.

      International:

Shocking vs AussieBB noticeably so. I do not recommend this service for people that download from international services. Using a VPN fixes this issue. https://speed.hetzner.de/ BEFORE VPN ON under 1MB/s AFTER VPN ON Australia SERVER: 3-4MB/s

      • 4 hours in and the live video chat with other people sucks. Pages won't load. Speeds suck. Drop outs. It's dog s*** and dealing with the Philippines support is just as horrible as i remember it to be. Back to AussieBB, as "it must be your modem and wifi". Right…..

Had to tether whilst ordering AussieBB cause it would drop out.

        • Ok, it's night and day with AussieBB, NIGHT AND DAY. Without going into mass detail, torrents, downloads, ping, speeds, response. Everything is better. In terms of overseas links 90% better. Quite profound.

@checkingthisout: Missed out on a good opportunity to give Superloop a try with their free month offer.

I used ABB before but have been on SL since April, it’s a superior service overall for me and costs a bit less than ABB too.

  • Jumped on the nbn through this deal excluding the modem, would my ozbargain sourced d-link dir-825 router support an HFC connection or should I be looking for a cheap compatible router before the connection date?

    • +1

Basically every router is compatible with HFC. NBN provides the modem which outputs a DHCP WAN over 1 gigabit Ethernet port.

  • +1

Made the switch from Aussie BB 50mb (HFC).

Registration over the phone was horrible. 1 hour of listening to terms and conditions.

Activation was super fast, within 15 minutes. I already had the NBN provided modem and my own router connected for Aussie BB, did not have to reboot anything.

    Speeds are good, around 93/37.

International links seem horrible though. I watch a lot of videos on Dutch websites, which are now basically unwatchable. It's buffering every few seconds.

If it stays like this, I won't stay long.

As said above here, difference between this and Aussie BB is night and day, in favor of Aussie BB.

    • Spot on same experience as me. International links? Forget it. It’s essentially only good for cached local content.

The terms and conditions were horrible.

      AussieBB is it

  • Currently with ABB using a telstra gateway Max modem. Can I just switch I’ve to this hassle free ? Do I need to tell ABB I’m switching ?

  • Holy smokes! Make sure you set aside 20min to go through the credit check and T&Cs! How much money are Vodafone wasting on call centre staff to service these useless calls when all they need to do is put a modem opt out box on the web signup form.

  • Has anyone that has switched from Aussie Broadband (ABB) can comment any further in the differences other than service i.e. would you say it was worth switching? I'd imagine Vodafone's service and ease of access (I love the MyAussie app) is no where compared to ABB, but a part of me still wants the bargain.

I'm currently on 50/20 Unlimited with ABB and am coming to an end with the 6-month deal, and am looking to hop. Seems to be this or Superloop's first month.

How's the switching process? Would it be to cancel my service with ABB first then switch/sign a new contract on the last day of service?

  • +1

I signed up this 100/40 for $69 a month after Aussie BB wouldn't give me their new discount even after pleading with them. Mind you, I only signed up with ABB 2 weeks ago. So I told them to stick their service where the sun don't shine and cancelled. Called Vodafone and saved $30 a month and speed is exactly the same. I'm getting 94mbit down and 38mbit up on FTTC, it's fantastic.

I encourage anyone with doubt to signup. Process was great, transfer occurred within 5-10 mins after signup.

    • Hey, so did you cancel with ABB first or sign up with Vodafone first?

    • what about the speed for international links as mentioned above? any problem?

  • +2

I cancelled with ABB first then signed up with Vodafone. It doesn't matter which order you do it in.

I have tested international link using Speedtest US and Europe servers and it's still hitting 85+mbit so no problems on my end.

If you do join however, they give you a network guarantee. If you are not happy with the service, you can cancel within 30 days without an issue.

Seeing that I didn't take their modem and am not on contract, I can cancel anytime anyway without cost. Worth a shot I reckon.

Btw, I'm using an old Telstra ADSL TG799vac gateway router.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Will try them next month

  • Just got connected regretting it already, average 15Mbps down, 30Mbps up?

    • seriously? I was just about to get connected!

      • Speed just depends on location, it can be competely different story even to your next door neighbour (house)

  • I just switched from ABB to Vodafone as well.

Signing up: Called to leave ABB first, then called Vodafone. I didn't know they do such rigorous credit check for this, asking details such as employment and how long you've lived at your current property. Whole ordeal took 30min on phone. Very robotic and lengthy with a lot of background call center noise.

Connecting: Hung up after account creation. Modem disconnected 5min later. Took multiple reboot/reconnect but eventually connected to Vodafone in 10min.

Speed: Speedtest.net on local server: 94Mbps/37Mbps. Speedtest.net on San Francisco AT&T server: 66Mbps/23Mbps. Speedtest.net on London Proxar IT server: 31Mbps/34Mbps.

Can't really complain when it's 69/month so far. But definitely could be better.

    • Update: I had three random dropout since joining Vodafone. All happening late at night between 10pm to 4am. Never had this issue living in the same place using the same modem with Internode and ABB before. Just cancelled and moved onto Superloop in the end.

      • Alright. I would STRONGLY advice any one thinking of signing up to Vodafone to reconsider, and any one wishing to leave to keep a close eye on their bank account for irregular direct debit.

I was with Vodafone NBN from 03/10/2019 to 25/10/2019. Upon leaving, I had a quarrel with the representative on the 30day network satisfaction guarantee. In the end he agreed to waive my fees, meaning I would not need to pay anything for the period I was with Vodafone NBN.

3 weeks past and on 13/11/2019, I received a bill from Vodafone saying I owe them roughly ~$50. The bill had some very strange figures, saying I was to pay the period from 11/10/2019 to 10/11/2019, and the due date for the owing is 27/11/2019. I called them on 14/11/2019, and the representative could not figure out what the bill meant and said on their system my account is in credit instead. About 15min of waiting around, he said he'll check with his supervisor when he gets in and give me a callback then.

~30hours past and I received the callback. The person said they'll REFUND me the amount they took. I was confused as I thought the amount was waived and I shouldn't have any debit from my bank. So I went onto my internet banking, and for some reason, ~$50 was taking out by Vodafone on 14/11/2019 EVEN THOUGH THE INCORRECT BILL SAID DUE DATE IS 27/11/2019. I think the representative on the phone realised they f'd up, so he puts in a request for a refund immediately and said my account should be officially closed…. Good thing I had some leeway amount on that account as I had bills to pay in the next day and it would've bounced….

Can't say I trust him…. Have to keep a close eye on my account to see if the refund gets in next week…

        • Update: So refund processed and it's 50cent short……. Do make sure to check your bills with Vodafone, their system is a joke… Going to give them a call again tomorrow morning, for 50cent.

          • @shattered: good idea as it will cost them 50 dollars in time to process it ;)

          • @shattered: omfg. I just received ANOTHER bill from Vodafone. This is ridiculous. They can just keep direct debiting like that too, have to block it from my bank. This company is so trash… Have to make another call again…

Avoid Vodafone at all cost if you value your time…

Edit: Lodged a TIO complaint on them too. Ridiculous…

  • Just signed up through their live chat system so I guess it's still possible to do it without having to call them. And also was a lot easier copying, pasting and typing all my details than spelling out and repeating line by line over the phone I'm assuming.

But wow people weren't kidding about them giving you the third degree with regards to your employment and residential details. The whole process was more akin to a credit card application than a NBN ISP sign up.

  • +1

Signed up for this plan but chose to go with 4G backup to avoid uncertainty with NBN connection. The speeds has been pretty good so far - mostly clocking between 80 and 90 MBPS.

    • +1

same here. NBN was connected last Friday and I’m getting the same speeds(HFC)

  • Just to clarify again… there is credit check when signing up to this?

    • Best to check with Vodafone itself. I was already with Vodafone (for mobile) so sign up wasn't as painful as for the new customers.

  • Has this deal changed back to what it was, looks like they're including the home hub again?

    • +1

I can still see the BYO option in their critical information summary. You need to either call them or have a chat with them to get the BYO option, you can't do that online.

  • Anyone with TPG or ABB, can you please do me a little favour and let me know the speed and ping your get on speedtest.net using Dallas, Sparklight Server? I am on Vodafone 100Mbps plan but only getting 5-7 Mbps using that server with 200 PING. Thank you for your help in advance!

  • +1

This now comes with a bonus Vodafone TV

    • Have to sign up online to qualify? Looks like we have to also lock in for 36 months otherwise we have to pay for the modem? Or we can opt not to have the modem? Can we schedule to connect in advance?

      • you better direct your questions to Vodafone

  • is anyone able to confirm - if i BYOD a vodafone modem/router, can i still get the backup 4G service for free?

    • I doubt it but only Vodafone can confirm it
