  • Can the 50% code be stacked with this price drop?

    • I thought you'd have already done it! Lemme check! :p

    • +2

nope. coupon code will only work with the RRP. will have to wait until they drop the RRP.

    • Comes to $599.50; that's what she said^

    • I wish it could be possible, only $300 for GP3 :(

  • +1

    keep dropping pleaseee

  • This should really be the base price. Being a year old, and running almost 2 year old SOC with not enough RAM and only a single camera lens, would be a really hard sell still at this price. Would be a great phone to pick up at the $600 mark though.

    • +2

Camera is fantastic, don't let "Single lens" convince you it's not great.

I've had one since launch day, the SoC is fine… Memory, battery and speakerphone are definitely not though and I'm pretty much over it. If the Pixel 4 had a decent sized battery and more RAM I'd probably go with that but that this point I have no idea what to do..

      • -1

Oh for sure it's fantastic, but just very limited as it's only a single lens. I mean most other phones are far more versatile. If you are just the most basic of phone camera user it will suit you just fine. I noticed a huge change in the way I take photos going from 3XL to S10, the aperature is really awesome and can make some really fantastic looking photos without having to use fake portrait modes. Also little things like Pixels inability to take macro shots, just another show of how limiting it is.

    • +1

Yeah the DxoMark score on that camera was one of the best on the market when it came out and still is amongst the best, outperforming many other manufacturers using 2-3 lenses. Ultimately it appears Google had to bite the bullet as the Pixel 4 coming out soon is using multiple lenses as well.

I dont think an older SOC or 4GB of RAM are a major drawback, the OS is extremely well optimised. My old first gen Pixel XL just got the update to Android 10, and its still running nice and smooth and its specs are significnatly worse than the gen 3 phones.

      • 4gb ram on P3 is a huge drawback. I ended up returning my 3xl after a few months, was terrible, couldn't keep chrome tabs open or apps open. I only noticed as I came from a note 8 to Pixel XL, and you notice straight away the difference RAM makes.

Yep single lens performance is fantastic, especially if you like the over processed look of pixels, they can be all you need. But compared to any other phone extremely limited camera capability, no optical zoom, no wide angle, no macro, only has fake bokeh which is terrible. But yes, compared to other single lens camera's it is really great.

I dont know, that sounds strange, never had that problem myself or from my wife who owns a Pixel 2XL. I know of 5 of my friends with Pixel phones and they all rave about how great they are, none of them have a 3XL, but one of them has a regular Pixel 3.

I regularly have 10-15 tabs open on Chrome on my OG Pixel and never had issues with performane. I would say there was something else wrong with your example, probably a faulty phone.

          • @FuRyZ: Not only is it a known issue of P3 being the worst of them, but it's been a thing in any android phone with not enough RAM. If you haven't hit the wall, then it's because you don't know what you are looking for, or haven't used phones with more RAM. My wife went from S8+ to P2XL and even she noticed it! Having apps having to reload constantly rather than staying open in memory.

Remember it's not performance, its the fact that it reloads the web page or app later.

I also went through 2 RMA's for P3XL and my wife had a single P3Xl and sold it, so I very much doubt all 3 phones were faulty.

@onlinepred: Funnily enough, I went the exact opposite way after many frustrating years with Samsung phones. We were die hard Samsung fans for a long time, probably owned roughly 10 phones between myself and my wife. My wife was the last to move over when she went from a S7 Edge to a 2XL.

The Samsungs were always great for the first 1-2 years and slowly bogged down until we were forced to purchase our next one as the phone's performance became unusable. I dabbled with custom ROMs to help extend their lifespan but it only stretched things out marginally. Touchwiz was badly optimised, and I hated the bloatware, the ROMs could remove the bloatware but introduced their own issues. I cannot comment about the last 3 generations of Samsung phones, maybe things have improved but I somehow doubt it. Hearing about frustrations such as being forced to use things like Bixby, just makes me chuckle.

The lack of long term OS support was also noticeable from Samsung. We would be lucky to get one major OS update, usually months after everyone else. With the Pixels, having the very latest version of Android released first to your phone is nice. Technically "official" support ended for my Pixel over a year ago, and yet I am still receiving major OS and security updates. I was pleasantly surprised when I got the update to Android 10 a few weeks ago, which I was not expecting at all. I was worried that finally the OS would start to give me trouble running such old hardware, but I havent noticed much difference at all.

Ultimately we all have different experiences with phones, mine has been extremely good in comparison to my old Samsung phones. I have never owned a phone as long as I have this Pixel XL. From my experience with Samsung phones, the usuable lifespan was always 3 years at the very most. I am genuinely impressed the phone keeps operating just as well as it did when I first purchased it all these years later. It is unfortunate your experience was not similar, but to each his own.

              • -1

@FuRyZ: Oh man the old samsung phones were terrible, I 100% agree. Although been rocking two phones for the last 4 years, bought nexus/pixels for myself and given samsungs for work. Samsung phones have improved significantly since S9. S10 is a far better phone in my experience. So much so I sold my P3XL and bought an S10E for me while carrying an S10 for work.

Although Pixels have a similar issue with patches/updates required a factory reset etc. Slowly but surely Pixels are getting more "bloat" too which sucks.

Seems like Samsung is starting the Android 10 beta program next month which is a huge improvement for them. I guess it's the whole Samsungs have more features anyway so you don't need to get the latest version of android at all. I had 3 OG XL's, and they all had software and hardware issues, I went through 3 RMA's shipping them off to Hong Kong. Compare that to when I accidentally put my work S9 in the washing machine, and walked into a store and they replaced it for free with a refurb.

Everyone has different experiences though. Just be aware android has changed a lot recently, and from S8 onwards the performance has increased significantly through android, and current galaxies are an entirely difference beast to your ancient S7 ;-)

                • +1

@onlinepred: Why did you have to ship your Pixels to Hong Kong for RMA, I assume you purchased grey imports?

I had one RMA, and Google organised a courier to come to my door to pick up and return the phone. It was an old Nexus 6P. It was that RMA experience actually that prompted me to look at getting rid of my Samsung phones and moving over to the Pixel phones. Local Google Australia support was amazing.

Heard many horror stories with RMAs through Kogan and other importers, I steer well clear of grey imports even though they are cheaper.

                  • @FuRyZ: No I bought from Google Australia store. The courier slip said it was going to Hong Kong. Took 3 weeks turn around.

        • +1

So strange about this. On my standard Pixel 2 I have 30 tabs open on my browser and the phone runs fine.

          • -1

@serpserpserp: Yea my phone ran fine too, it's just that you open a few other apps, then go back to those tabs, and they will need to reload the tabs. Then you go back to the app/game and it needs to reload the app/game. It's not a huge deal, just not something I think should be an issue on such an expensive phone.

    • Since when was 4GB not enough RAM in a smartphone?

      • Since android, then Chrome, then games I guess. It really depends on the OS though, like iOS doesn't require as much ram to perform as good, neither did Windows Phone. Perhaps phones are getting too smart for their own good these days.

        • +1

I'd say the Pixel is in the same about as iPhones then, as it's launcher is much more efficient than other smartphones running Android.

          • @magic8ballgag: Luckily you can install the Pixel launcher on any android phone ;-) Nova it where it's at though if you want better performance, it's even leaner than the growing in size pixel launcher.

Pixel line is becoming more and more locked down and less customisable, it's becoming like the iPhone. One benefit of this is reduced "bloat", features etc, but then the downside is less features and less customisations - but this may not matter to most I guess.

            • +1

@onlinepred: It's not just the launcher though, the Pixel doesn't come with the same bloatware that the majority of other Android smartphones come with, which all leech off valuable resources like RAM etc.

              • @magic8ballgag: Like what? Do you use Google Duo? Google Dreams? Dreams Service? Google Hangouts? Google Allo? Do you use Wellbeing? All these are uninstallable on a pixel, the amount of apps are also growing.

You also have to change your wording. Bloatware is carrier apps. What you mean is apps or features that you don't use. Luckily you can turn anything you don't like off on most phones these days.

                • -1

@onlinepred: I only use Google Duo out of all of those, and I don't believe it's part of the factory Pixel pre-isntalled apps.

Bloatware is whatever the smartphone manufacturer/carrier installs as part of the 'stock' image and the end-user does not bother removing, causing unnecessary RAM usage.

                  • @magic8ballgag: So on a Google Pixel duo/dreams/hangouts/allo/well being/watch/keyboard/etc are all bloat?

My p3Xl comes pre installed with all of these, and you can't uninstall them.

      • It may be enough for other phones but it definitely isn't enough for the Pixel 3.

I own a Pixel 3 and my old Pixel XL has less trouble with memory management.

        • I believe that's more of a P3-specific issue, I was referring to the Pixel in general.

    • +2

I just used the pixel 3 purely for camera itself. Everyone in my family are impressed when I share the photos.

      • -1

Oh yea for sure, any new phone now will take incredible photos. Just keeps getting better. I took P3XL on holidays and found it terribly limiting only having a single lens. Being far away from things meant that I had a photo with a tiny object/structure in it. Compare that to most other phones with optical zoom and wouldn't have been an issue. Also having to rely on portrait mode which is terrible to get any form of apperature/bokeh is pretty annoying. But for super basic photos it's fantastic for sure.

      Different device, invalid neg…

    • +1

Yeah. That is a different phone. Invalid neg.

    • -1

apologies…although i dont understand how thew smaller lower spec phone is still more expensive than the 3XL in this deal :/

      • Is it really hard to work out that a retailer is selling a phone cheaper then another retailer?

        • Not really mate, it's just not a bargain then is it?

          • @cacique: Yes it is a bargain, not everyone wants the larger screen just like others don't want the smaller screen.

How is this not a bargain if you want this product?

            • -2
              • +1

@cacique: U seems too convinced in proving your point, one deal you referring is targetted and other for different model.

There are ppl out there with diff needs, wants. Not everyone is same and not all deal listed is bargain for everyone.

Calm down, don't take it personally. Move on
