Optus Prepaid MyTab Back by Popular Demand - $99!!!!

2110

Just received an SMS from Optus saying mytabs can be ordered online.

Offer is valid till 15th of July

http://www.optus.com.au/mytaborders

http://www.optus.com.au/store/phone/mytab_prepaid_orders?sid…

Mod: Just got an email from Optus' Social Media Team, basically

  • It is no longer in stock, and they do not offer it as a prepaid device anymore.
  • It is only available as a post-paid product. See this Optus tablet plans.
  • Please remove this deal as soon as possible.

Well I won't remove this post, but it's now marked as expired. Moreover, DO NOT call Optus to ask about this prepaid product (apparently their call centre is overloaded by OzBargainers).

Mod (9/7): Appears to be back in stock. Reopened until further advice.
Mod (11/7): Out of stock again.

  • I have been playing with the mytab. Main purpose I bought was for the big size gps unit. It was recommended earlier to use copilot or sygic. I got copilot live but that one was horrible. It didn't pick up the gps signal and address search was a big fail. Can't lookup even single address. I am trying the trial version of sygic and see how it goes.

Just wondering from anyones personal experience if there are any free gps programs which are good for sydney/australia that work without internet.

    • Just use the latest google map, it already support turn by turn by voice too but you need to have internet connection. I use wifi thetering from my mobile phone.

      • I tried this on the way home last night. Its really quite good (but does require a data plan).

        • +1

Yes it is, however since it come with 3GB data for 3 months so it should be no problem for the first 3 months.

        • +1

After which I suggest trying tpg or something. Counting in 10MB blocks as optus does is just wrong. (tpg charges in 10KB blocks for comparison)

  • I received mine yesterday, and playin through the whole night no sleep, its wonderful thank you "bozter" for letting us know.
I have tpg mobile broadband, tpg sim is working (can make and receive calls) but can not able to connect internet.

anyone know how to setup APN for TPG? really appreciated.

  • Just wonder where can I input unlock code ?

    • +1

I seem to recall reading that it only prompts you for the code when you insert an invalid SIM.

      • Thats correct just insert a telstra sim and it asks for a pin

        • Thanks. Get it done :)

  • picked up mine from the post office this morning, thanks to the OP.

  • Can the SIM which comes with it be used for voice calls (ie. normal phone calls)? When I tried to dial out, I got some recorded message from Optus about service not available. Internet access is fine. Not really wanting to use the SIM to make phone calls - just curious. 8-)

p/s how to check the data usage for the 3Gb free data?

    • text balance to 9999, and yes should be able to make phone calls!

      • Can the SIM also be used in other phones that are unlocked (normal calls and possibly 3G)?

        • yes i believe so, it is just a standard optus sim card.

  • can someone recommend a case for this? I'm thinking of buying this

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Premium-Flip-Leather-Case-Cover-Z…

    • I bought a "Black Jelly Soft TPU Case For 7" ZTE V9 light Tablet". There's also clear and white available, the prices seem to be bugged in ebay at the moment.

      • Thanks Redmo0n. I'll contact the seller about the weired pricing.

      • I bought this one "Soft cover case for ZTE light V9+screen protector 02B", it not the cheapest case but you got the screen protector.

        • include price would be handy for others to compare

        • It cost US$7.59 include shipping.

        • Thanks sahat.

    • I got a BELKIN 7 " case.

      • Can you tell me where you bought and how much?

        • I was lucky & got it secondhand for $10. Still had price sticker for $29.95 Good Guys.

    • Another option is this one
      http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280686…

But it seems from hongkong so it need around 2 weeks to be delivered. I still waiting mine.

Am I alone in just trimming off the little bit sticking out of the screens protective plastic and leaving it on there to use as a screen protector?

    • No, I did the same thing :)

      • i actually found the screen to have a much better feel, and be more responsive with out the cover on, although i did the same thing with the first tab i got last year, feels much better without it though.

For someone who has just got one of these new with Android 2.2 preinstalled from Optus, is there a beginner's guide available on how to install the latest (15/7) hacks along with some basic explanation of why the steps are taken.

    • +1

I'm currently on 20110715 which is the latest custom rom to my knowledge. I posted a bit of info on page 5 but basically whirlpool forums has a 26+ page discussion on cyanogen mod with all the info you need to put it onto 20110524, then you can basically follow the initial guide along with a guide posted on page 23/24 from a member called "Steve J" to update to 20110715. If you need any help feel free to post in the thread, here or contact me via pm. I had some trouble initially trying to understand the process but after a bit of trial and error I'm on 20110715 and it's fantastic (pinch to zoom!)

      • There is now a new version 20110717. I think I will wait for a few days before I start tinkering. I have seen the links but it is quite confusing for a novice. Just the sheer amount of guides, modified guides, updated modified guides and people bricking their devices. That is why I hoped someone would write it up with some simple explanations of the steps (like what do we get exactly by installing these mods? what is this partitioning talk about? do IMEI get overwritten? etc.)

          Hi

          Have a look here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1713293&p…

This is a pretty easy guide to follow to get to 20110531 which will give a significant boost to your tabs performance. I can't comment on the exact difference between 531 and stock 2.2 as I only had 2.2 for a few hours before installing the custom rom but everything looks a lot nicer for one and the lock screen seems smoother. In general a lot of people report better frame rates in games, better battery life and a smoother overall experience. You can even overclock your cpu a little after rooting the device (kinda like jailbreaking for apple devices but a lot easier), if you have any problems with the custom roms feel free to post here. Don't worry about bricking the tab, in nearly every case you can get back to optus 2.2 firmware and start again and if worse comes to worse optus will not be able to tell you bricked your tab and would replace/refund you.

I would say my favourite thing about the custom roms is getting rid of 99% of the software branding, unique interface (more modern/updated) along with nicer backgrounds/widgets. Also the ability to install custom apps and have more control of the tabs functions is cool :)

        • Thanks Redmoon,
Do you know if it is possible to activate the SIM card if you have already modded the tab?
Also, do you lose your IMEI when modding?

        • +1

          Hi Skatoz

I replied to the wrong post, see my other post a little further down for answers to your questions.

      • Is one of these versions conisdered more stable?

I'm not really a daily build (bleeding edge) kind of guy.

        • +1

I haven't had any real problems with 20110715, on my initial installation I completely messed it up by installing the kernel first and then rebooting which nearly bricked the tab, then I managed to restore to 2.2 unofficial and then the whirlpool member steve j managed to make a optus 2.2 rom that would run in oneclickrecovery so I went back to that. After that I tried again and screwed up (don't know how?) and just got the cyanogen boot menu on a loop, after trying again I managed to get stuck on the ZTE bootscreen but taking the battery out fixed it and now the tab has worked great ever since MINUS one issue which is when plugged in via usb the "Turn on usb storage" page will constantly pop up every 10s-2min even after you dismissed it, but it's not a huge issue.

20110717 has one change which is support for bluetooth tethering (PAN) which isn't big for me so I'll probably wait for a new release which is likely just around the corner :)

Edit: A lot of people are on 20110531 which is what's supplied in the whirlpool guides first page, I don't think there's any big issues with it and personally I would go for a newer version, but it's probably the most common build most whirlpoolers are using. Here's the thread just in case you need it: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1713293&p…

        • Running 20110717 here, skipped over 0715 from 0711, but no real issues found. Not much difference either though.

        • Can I just follow the instructions on page 1 of WP for 20110531 but substitute a new ROM like 20110717?

        • +1

          Hi Comphelp,

I believe you need to follow the instructions on the first page to get to 531, then go to 624 with the brief instructions on page 23 from Steve J and then you can go to 717 or any newer firmwares. Maybe ask this in the whirlpool thread as it's a interesting question :).

      • +1

The SIM should work/activate fine even when the tab is modded (I think I activated mine on 531 firmware or maybe while it was on 2.2, not sure). You shouldn't lose your IMEI but in the case you do there's a backup in "Sales_MultiDL" which is needed to update to newer firmwares, I also think theres other ways to recover it and possible other fail safes when updating.

  • Hello OzBargainers!

Woot to those who scored a MyTab on this deal. :)

For those who are activating the prepaid SIM, which is the correct plan to select to go on to the package below?

    • Includes up to 3GB Data valid for 3 months *

    Thank you!

    • Yes

      • Hi Mikinoz,

Sorry if I wasn't very clear on the question above.

When I tried to register there was 3 options available:
        - Connect N' Surf
        - Connect N' Go
        - Data Days

Non of them offers 3GB data valid for 3 months, they all expire in 30 days.

        • +1

          I used connect n surf
Worked fine, but I assume they will all work.
Pick the plan that suits you when you need to recharge I guess.

  • Hi daye,

I guess what I was trying to do was to make sure if I don't use up the 3GB, it doesn't expire within 30 days but will carry the full 3 month period.

Obviously if I use up the data before then I just need to top up.

    • Activated today, and worked fine.

      • Hi daye,

Looks like the expiry date is extended to 3 months. Cool!

Which of the three did you select? Does yours include any call credits?

        • Connect N' Surf
        • Connect N' Go
        • Data Days

        Cheers!

        • +1

I think regardless of the plan you choose you get the 3gb, i chose the first one and i'm pretty certain when you next recharge you can change it anyway. The 3gb is a separate bonus you get on any plan I believe. I would check out going on a LiveConnected plan for data, they charge in 1kb blocks and are coming out with some purely data plans soon. Right now though they offer some good deals if you need ongoing data though so check them out (much much cheaper than prepaid, and why not get he calls too? you could always use it to sms alot etc).

Since being a LC customer for the last 6 months I have huge faith in them so plug them at every chance :P but I am not affiliated with them in anyway, just to be clear.

After receiving my fourth sms today indicating my order had been delayed I contacted Optus to see what was going on. Apparently, there was an error while "releasing" my order from the warehouse, the CSR couldn't tell me what went wrong, but has "fixed" it and I should receive by the end of the week.

This is after pre-registering, ordering on the 8th, and having my CC debited sometime early last week. I didn't called for any of the Id checks that others have spoken of either.

Anyway, just thought I'd let other people who are in the same boat know to give Optus a call to make sure their orders actually went through.

    • on friday they told me i ll get it around mid this week,
and they didnt have any explanation why i didnt get it yet,
no matter i ordered on friday evening.

    • did u get it?

  • Spoke to 2 optus reps today, one at the optus shop, another from optus phone support. Both said that the SIM card which came with this package is data only (ie. the free 3Gb with 3mth expiry), and cannot be used for voice calls. This seems to be the case for my SIM. Is anyone else finding the same thing?

    • Confirmed, just tried calling my mobile, didn't work…

Anyhoo, happy to be able to score one at this price, the 3GB with 3 months expiry was a bonus…

Now looking for case and screen protector.

  • I have unlocked my tab and have been using it with vodafone broadband connection..it works fine with most of the websites but for some reasons when i try to open gmail, facebook etc through the internet explorer ( optus ) it just does nothing and blanks out..is anyone else also facing this issue..or am i doing something wrong???..appreciate your help !!

    • Are you using widegets that came with the tablet to access these sites? they could going via optus gateway? Highly unlikely though…

try accessing them via the browser

      • Thanks bozter..i did trythe browswer through optus zoo icon but nothing much hpnd..

        • Have you tried accessing them through another browser like dolphin browser?

Anyone looking for a detailed and complete guide to get to the latest firmware can go here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1713293&p…

This is currently completely up to date as of 20/07/2011

All credit to Steve J :)

  • Mine says received for linehaul how long does it take to be deliveroed now!

    • It should depend how far it need to deliver. But I think it should be just a day or two.

  • I can't get mine to stay connected to my network (and I'm out of the Optus mobile range). Only had it for less than a week, but it's not for me.

Anybody want mine with one of these leather flip cases (I have one on the way) for $120?

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190522…

    • Just a suggestion probably you can still use WiFi or you can unlock the device and use another network operator.

If you still like to sell it and you are around Sydney my friend will be interested.

      • Sorry, I meant it won't stay connected to my wifi network. Probably just my router or a setting. I've tried the various fixes, but it just doesn't like it.

Actually just tried it connected to my Mac's Airport and it likes that. So definitely my router.

        • Actually it is one of My Tab flaw. Just install "Advanced Wifi Lock". You may find it on Android Market.

  • I tried that (and Blade), but they didn't work. I think I may have worked it out - I had TKIP and AES in the WPA2 security, changed it to TKIP only and that might have worked. It's something like that. Need to have more of a fiddle.

  • Is anyone having problems with using their mytab was a wifi hotspot after CM7?

Also I cant use my tab as a usb storage now. It's not giving me that option. I've tried turning usb debugging off and still no luck.

Last question, after rooting the mytab are you guys installing apps/games for free? how?

    • Haven't used hotspot so I can't comment on that. To turn usb storage on drag the taskbar down and hit usb connection, as for free apps I think you will have to look at some of less legal sources of obtaining free movies, music, games etc. I heard they fly a ship with a black flag and there's others out there, maybe even one that prays to demons?

  • Just adding to the above, the wifi hot spot turns off when I click the power buttong to lock the tab or the display timer runs out and automatically locks the phone.

    Anyone experience this problem?

Nb. its for wifi hot spot not the actual wifi

    thanks

    • Try the advanced wifi lock mentioned, keeps wifi on when tan sleeps

I activated my sim card today but it seems to only have 2 months instead of 3 is that correct? I chose the Connect N' Surf plan.

    • +3

      maths might help here…….

      26/7 -> 26/8 = 1month
      26/8 -> 26/9 = 1month
      26/9 -> 26/10 = 1 month

      1+1+1 = 3

  • Is there anyone else who didnt get it yet?
i was supposed to get it mid last week,
but at yesterday i still get delay sms and mail.

I already talked 3 times with optus,
and every times they say everything is correct in the order, but
for unknown reason is not clear when ill get it.

    cheers

    • +1

Yep, me too. Ordered within 2 hours of getting SMS on 08/07/11. Spoke to Optus 3 times as well- some BS about my order not being correct. In the meantime got heaps of SMSes apologising for delay. Finally told me yesterday ALL stock have been sent out and no more stock coming it. Could only offer me an apology and a refund. Not happy about it at all. Will be sending a lengthy complaint letter tomorrow to Optus letting them know about it.

      • You should demand they gave you from their business stocks…

When these were sold out for personal customers, it was available under business section…. Cant find that link anymore though.

Or demand for a Samsung Galaxy!!! No harm in trying!

        • Yes especially you are a pre-order customer because they promise that all pre-order customer will have it.

        • Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm over it. I'll stick with my SGT for now. Had wanted to get the Mytab mostly as a cheap ebook reader but maybe get an e-ink reader instead.

      • wow nice that they didnt even bother to let know,
        will give a call tomorrow,
do u have the info to where to address the complain form?

thanks for the reply in any case.

        • +1

This was the address I found on their website:

          Customer Relations Group
          Locked Bag 31001
          Flinders Lane VIC 8009

There is also an online complaint form you can complete at the Optus Contact Us page.

I've found in the past that companies tend to act more on a written complaint and that you've got to give them all the facts and be reasonable. Last time I was offered a free laptop backpack after Dell sent me the tax invoice 10 days after delivery meaning I missed out on claiming back the GST when I went overseas.

  • Can anyone recommend a good cover for these tabs???

  • +1

Hi Guys, Looking for a case for My Tab, end up bought a usb keyboard case from Dino Direct for about $13 including postage. I use it as a protective case. I like to use the keyboard sometime, but after connected to the usb, didn't know how to make it work. Can one of you knowledgeble guys help me out ? There are a few videos on youtube about it, but not that useful. Cheers.

  • I was in the Australia Post on Smith St in Collingwood today and it looks like they have some, only thing is I don't remember if it said prepaid or post-paid.

  • Does anybody know how to return this device to Optus ?
I got a faulty one where the battery indicator keep increasing even I am not charging it, I tried to call them on several number(such as 1800-505-888 and 1300-300-562) been transfer between several people, I even went to Optus store and none of those help.

  • Want to use my vodafone data on this ZTE, anyone know how to set it up as I'm still using optus firmware.
